Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. % f R# _# _# h" p* j4 g* }/ g

Dear International Undergraduate Students,' k& K z# s; x# _1 a) m `& S+ j
" t8 T9 m: n. j: kYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
0 W5 Z0 } M$ H/ W2 o ZCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
* `9 B0 o: |2 A( k0 U# T( U+ Snews to report from that meeting.; R7 C0 Y5 L1 y" q
( `6 o/ U! m# P
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
1 p, m7 w0 r5 t [undergraduate international students from the increase to the % R! D. k/ E, Z+ {1 q0 X
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
+ K" j: H# ?, ?3 n" astudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base 1 G1 @2 q, R% ^ m: W6 p* m7 P$ m
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
: M& @/ ? }2 A1 hAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase ( p9 ` E. X& |, Q
the differential for international graduate students.' S8 l4 o" Q0 P5 |" z w) T
2 u5 \9 z' H% X; ~4 m2 l; FNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
% C+ r" Q# M7 y$ oincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 2 f" U3 b ^9 @) Q0 Q* d
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
. [ p# c1 Z: p) u& Hwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At + r: x& Z; m# y" y' `3 p: M4 ?! s4 o9 }
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
! J( d" |7 C6 mtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
, f; e6 y' J6 b2 n. A3 Mincreases once they are here.

6 F' g# o6 d) r( k zThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
( j6 e% I/ y+ z0 \: Rinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I 3 N; l2 z( u: Q* X! i/ {0 [2 y: Z
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that \2 g4 h. C9 T1 y/ o
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
$ @" p, q8 }! E5 V4 Sincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your 7 k2 T3 F, {9 V7 D9 v' `
