Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

# b2 d1 q. M7 u( ?1 T! VYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
9 f. Q; z( n2 E% ?  ~( x* Knews to report from that meeting.

First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
# \& ]+ J8 @$ Uundergraduate international students from the increase to the
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
; e, D  E& O- Mstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
! D( q1 f9 ?) q) s. X4 \tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
1 [( O0 x# v$ dthe differential for international graduate students.

Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
1 [( T, d# N2 j& v; p+ dincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
+ b1 _! n$ U* Q( A+ y, C4 W, P3 M220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
2 q( e8 R8 ^$ Z# F* h- C. jwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
4 ?+ ]) M0 V: G2 Qtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
increases once they are here.

3 g1 }* S1 {& `3 V4 b, a9 HThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
1 g. G! b4 ~% A9 Yinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
# B$ S# {# {. ^. Z+ I4 Oincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
help. Thank you.
