Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. + y- H. l6 V1 Q3 u) j

$ l( u$ P% q7 \" n6 ?* K, pYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
* U3 W L: ?! e! WCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 0 y7 K' I( p5 Z' I
news to report from that meeting.; ]8 F% x N2 e: N& n w
5 V7 A$ q% x" b, f3 E; RFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
. q+ R2 E/ b. f9 e Rundergraduate international students from the increase to the ' }: s# t3 @/ x! I1 M# p# P
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international 4 a& E4 K1 i1 P
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
- ] @4 x# F6 `3 j! ctuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). + O# K0 i- w1 A* X/ n5 m
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase / {. }. Y, A6 H* x: i, L
the differential for international graduate students.1 W7 s' z. z U( O# M2 ^! M
$ G; J. f: z! W1 m( CNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
3 i- R; N2 s8 C5 a& fincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
. q, p/ \1 I( N' K0 n! h5 ]220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 1 T9 {& N& y7 P' j
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
0 P2 H. y5 {% X# j Uleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
, W- c% K6 Z* x Ttuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected $ M& o3 n: c( M# Y! F) G' n
increases once they are here.

' [5 a8 H/ i+ Y0 ?4 r. u* QThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the + T9 V g- d6 u# z4 `8 N
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
) [. e3 W/ y3 d S' \7 i% mwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that ) i+ H1 B* r/ N
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
* Z5 _4 K5 _: D! Z7 h4 ?increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
* D% K0 G, I9 m# vhelp. Thank you.
