2 F2 g4 t. I2 U  h5 b% }2 vGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

' ?* ]/ P) D2 N  h7 ~; e2 M4 hYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
news to report from that meeting.

6 f8 |# _- ~& i6 X4 Y% ^  J, S7 [8 N( cFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
- A6 \$ _9 q! R9 U- Tdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
% u5 K1 b# j* `students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
0 b% z! J) q% s2 n1 EAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
the differential for international graduate students.
* j' w8 ^- |3 T8 O5 F
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
. n( x. g: M% {( d! [will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
increases once they are here.

1 J; ?8 D0 X. G3 u2 a8 _7 kThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
  a4 W6 l( ]! z2 q4 Linternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
help. Thank you.
