# a2 [8 S* [9 Q5 y1 F, I3 zGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

" U; c3 g% ^( q- }) _/ zYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties ! Z0 i/ K% l6 h) h9 _% ?* [
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 3 y0 K; X0 G8 |! g! z* ?3 D8 L
news to report from that meeting.
N( w! } a- Z7 s
* R/ q0 c- V. P: oFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current 7 E0 [9 J% v% i: @ G
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
$ }# r3 q$ s3 [! H$ {3 l* R M8 Cdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international 2 i1 W; f ]) l* Q9 M3 M7 T6 P
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base 8 Z. c2 B# ~# i1 ?7 A
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). ' b* b L/ ~5 A- E. o
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
5 r z9 {6 |1 g) Othe differential for international graduate students.( y$ E$ z* | @5 n' n6 m9 F
B6 V6 v) u% p8 c# o; f UNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
. k9 |" g7 Z& t' J" Qincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
/ u# v& Y K" i" C, t }220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students " n; R5 D8 n! J7 Y, L1 a
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
1 b" Z: n+ K4 Jleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in + L8 \9 _' _! b# l
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected ( B8 p1 T K9 F+ P: h/ f- x
increases once they are here.. i5 k) l7 `7 r, Z. s
8 d" J8 j) @9 V" h, @" ?8 s8 G" L6 [+ SThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the 8 h: p$ E/ s' A
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

* {3 }; T: o* ^have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
( _1 y2 {2 u( g" C; a# O" ]increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
