Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties ' H; d' S: E2 H+ Q- h8 l+ a5 j( }
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
5 b8 @9 s! A1 g+ n: D4 Bnews to report from that meeting.3 d7 f8 L) ^) M: n5 l5 y& S
3 g5 O' b6 f% Y/ d' e2 d
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
! \/ H6 l9 a( t' h, |undergraduate international students from the increase to the
- K4 q J, l B5 R Z% ?& a4 ]differential fee. This means that next year, all current international * N3 D" W1 I. O
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base . T% x2 { X7 W2 `8 u# N9 g
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
' q! R& S$ X8 N$ r- O3 {Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
# _) a5 b& N6 s! h/ p; t5 Bthe differential for international graduate students./ d* i8 w6 U! A2 @
: M5 o5 ?, v6 uNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an 7 q% S& q% L$ @% [4 C, C8 C! r1 d) E
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
' g" }/ J p: n; T+ S220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 5 K8 `* o8 y6 L& D: {
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
% w0 B1 `' Q+ i( r1 h' |least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
, _% p) H ~: w# {) s/ D% Atuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected * \! d( Y- J h, j6 D6 ]
increases once they are here.

9 r& A6 W3 V' bThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the 7 D8 w. V2 V/ g( f( ~: Q
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

4 ~2 b" g- A* W `" i$ y! `1 Jhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
