Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
) g' Z/ d' [: X3 Gnews to report from that meeting./ q$ k& c6 N: f2 I
9 Z- [0 M3 g4 S; y8 {, m. h8 vFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
# K% @$ b1 A( ~2 w: S& aundergraduate international students from the increase to the
, h. p& f$ O/ ~2 F3 D' t1 Idifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
5 K, }8 n% I6 }6 }& A# dstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
) L3 ?3 t. x) y" J8 i: Q+ Q# ^tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). ; d8 }7 f" Y; _8 p8 ~' I
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
& ]; G3 F: o0 |) f6 Othe differential for international graduate students.- L. l Y O; A2 d& B
( T% `; _3 r2 ]6 J/ A5 RNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
# I% P s- }" d. t3 C, @/ `increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 5 t6 c3 k4 h, T ]$ ?* Z' ?7 D
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students + _7 @* {, x& n9 z
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
& A/ C9 Y! s5 \ z& j: x Aleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
" g& J9 G3 A. l; s$ P% v1 u/ otuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected 4 D! O+ ^5 v( `% Z
increases once they are here.

/ T0 N/ z- M- R$ J8 e6 p: OThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
& B3 @" p4 d9 K$ f3 M: u& Winternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I ( f7 N ?. C5 O
