Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. 1 S. `, C* a; N1 d2 r% ? N) B% n

) r: [& U Q9 t% ?" l. aCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
+ q' I; S8 x5 _9 h2 f. jnews to report from that meeting.

First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current $ H- S [& z& a+ n1 `
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
# ]8 w0 A0 P7 v5 Vdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international ! t- E% P# o% I# ^- j8 i1 V# a
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base 8 ?, M. L0 O2 A t* S/ P
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). % b6 n% Z4 l& E' ]1 W
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
. c* y2 e* a' u' F) e( N8 |the differential for international graduate students.9 w: F1 @6 M; ^4 U& H
, w: q/ z; R; O) A X# m: RNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an . V& y7 o% i8 b- Z& q
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to " \! D$ C+ P7 g
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students ' B% T8 T- m# u6 T* V9 g) E
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
2 R5 G: F8 D4 Kleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
: a; a1 J) ~9 L5 L) V! htuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected , k. G# k. I, f a0 l
increases once they are here.; |9 M! ~0 m* z% @' k, W+ Q

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
, Q& Y ~9 X8 ~3 i+ S% I1 ~international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
