Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. " J) l) C2 b9 D. A3 o! t

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties R, Q' b T! |4 w5 ]
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad & S; w3 Y$ G6 T, f
news to report from that meeting.! E0 J5 k% I6 B# Y8 y. i I2 j
: Z9 ^2 c5 u( `% y8 w
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current 5 k7 K3 c( {; N* v
undergraduate international students from the increase to the " T( ^/ v& \) w, z# f* U) H! q
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
& O" T9 B3 f. @0 y% J2 Nstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base # m5 J( V' `) V
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). & | R1 B6 f, P7 S2 \+ W
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase }7 K: K3 ]! x G! }5 f, V. Q
the differential for international graduate students.

1 y$ {+ F% l1 D8 q9 j1 qNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
& q9 w2 n. [9 C5 Qincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
; J& J9 W+ }2 {& l$ k' |- k C220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 2 ^1 C. `' \* Q. q$ ~' }8 P& _% a
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
" o6 E* Q( Y4 _: i# V+ R+ l) wleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
$ V; H! a9 G' Stuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
1 \5 T, o: |: K# }/ Iincreases once they are here.% |! X$ f5 ^0 P0 {4 N
7 V/ _' I' P# O: \The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the . X0 _& F# A1 n
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

# `4 F; E( T: X' R3 X% Fhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this $ C' G" {6 ~; \1 z: f+ x+ U$ \
