% Z$ e! P- M/ s, AGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Dear International Undergraduate Students,
& _3 O+ {+ X/ O9 B" H/ `6 X- m+ R8 a* b4 @' E* h4 R$ O, J
Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties : S* r g* q$ y( u
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 0 ?/ j( k' L+ c
news to report from that meeting.4 ^4 U4 m" E, ?. Y a
( i6 L( H Z9 t; _ X0 H: S1 sFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
1 C) A4 e3 Z( O7 k" d3 N Aundergraduate international students from the increase to the + {6 v" b" U) I- g6 X) y; h h# w$ L
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international - V6 V+ i( f# D3 L. a; g& o8 D- P
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
E/ B$ z( d7 s' }8 u5 utuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). % x* | {$ E! y( W, Y' U, @. }/ R
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
% Q$ e# @: d2 @- A& othe differential for international graduate students.
9 M+ Y. u% |. }+ \1 D/ |. m* _& ~
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
1 r- P" `3 s$ P* n5 G3 dincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
0 k1 d4 s2 k. @' D: Q# T! G220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
5 x2 `9 w0 [8 h* ^. B" kwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
. N# \! t3 x7 ileast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
+ ]7 `" B9 `: K2 z" W, O# W+ ~! Ktuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
& X' X" N! J( g, Q7 _increases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the - L. I, R' q( D- G3 s, f. \
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I 5 _; ~/ L; v' m( @
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
% G5 ^3 C" ^- s! l4 u& Vhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
: x% E% c) ]# F8 o/ {! P# fincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
9 v, K+ a" {/ g3 _help. Thank you.
