you are only allowed to use your outprovince plate for 90 days by Alberta law, during this period, you need to change your plate, your dirver license and pass the outprovince inspection for your car, if you failed in that inspection, you can not get registered and insured, you have to re-test again. there are hundreds money you have to pay if you want to keep your car.

there are much more detailed regulations about how to identify if you are an Alberta resident. but if you have job and live here for long time,say, 3 month or more, you can not bear an other province plate for ever. I guess, it is illegal. Unless you never bother a police officer, you will be caught someday and facing a big fine ticket at least.
