May 9 2008 - Statistics Canada reports that the unemployment rate rose to 6.1% in April even though employment increased by an estimated 19,000 over the month as more people entered the job market. Calculated in the U.S. manner, the participation rate reached 64.5% in April. % g1 b% K$ A+ k9 Y1 b' b8 K
" q0 n( ^7 b5 |$ `3 @% K5 m# nOnly Manitoba registered significant jobs growth during the month. Overall, the decline in manufacturing jobs continues as a major trend with 112,000 factory jobs lost since April 2007.
