Measurement program. Her hard work has paid off; in July 2008 she
. M; M4 S" _( Oaccepted a position in the MacEwan Financial Services department.1 x9 N( k2 O; q& N) H$ [0 t
It is an outcome she could never have predicted in 2003 when she3 B, a6 m7 O1 t6 \
came to Grant MacEwan as an exchange student from Heze Medical) i2 ?. h+ J! V' c- |" X
College to continue her nursing studies. She came as a top student0 Q+ {5 j- Q1 A( E9 e b
and vice-president of her student activities association, but when she! p! p8 Q8 J3 c' L+ f0 L
got here, everything changed. Two years later she found herself struggling,0 g8 X ^- F6 d. f( M& a2 g
barely keeping up with her program and on the verge of commencing
+ \" X7 [$ |) n# jher clinical practicum. “I asked myself, ‘What’s my goal? Do
2 d6 J, @* ^/ D" f3 m3 SI want to stay in nursing my whole life?”* J: ~9 S. o9 [, ^4 Q, {. K# o. F
She turned to Katherine Hildebrand at the Student Resource8 b4 q. s1 r2 f& r
Centre. “I noticed that Katherine was a good friend to many, and as- V% Z5 q% K$ Z: d4 p& C* w& q
an international student I have learned that you have to speak out,
( O1 f; _5 V9 E( Y. R$ Ttalk to someone. You cannot be struggling by yourself. Even if you
- p# ?5 O+ V" m: a5 r3 \# Hfind a way forward, it’s going to take you so long. They are going to
8 Y0 b% B2 ^ m4 d& L3 @3 Bgive you the help that you need.”
* O7 W! @/ O8 B. p; v“Katherine asked me, ‘What are you interested in?’” I was interested
5 U! L( M8 L2 a" I; R$ R4 c" q% ~in numbers, so I tried a few basic accounting courses, and I did really# x0 I% [0 T, k. |0 n6 J" C
well. I got As, and I was so satisfied. Then Katherine helped me apply
7 B$ i0 E2 {+ Q/ I; ~to the program.” That, however, was just the beginning of a long haul.
5 n- G( r& F: L8 {/ |“It was a really, really big challenge. It was a good thing I was in the' K) S6 t( w ? P- U
co-op program. I was able to practice and get paid. It really helped
" Q$ y% {8 F9 E4 {/ [) Bout.” Shaoping believes that nothing is impossible. “My favourite6 |, x; o5 B6 X3 ?8 o! ]) h
feeling is enjoying a small success after working hard on a challenge.”0 O2 J4 \, T3 N5 n. O) c
Throughout this period Shaoping relied on a large circle of friends) |1 T: G# k. P7 A) ^9 Z$ z9 [, p
and staff at Grant MacEwan, and high among them, Katherine.
" G' X3 }) e" ~- u, B% A2 x9 \* [“Katherine is like one of my parents. I trust her and could tell her2 p: U; k: w3 d, X0 D
anything from my heart. She always has my best interests in mind.”; Z/ y6 I. D4 U5 f) _
With such support and a new job, she has decided to stay in
1 Q3 r/ U" O" q) m0 z* M$ p2 x" wEdmonton for now, “I feel Grant MacEwan is my home here.” With, D* Z/ x, N/ q5 i3 @. w& N7 [+ Z
diploma in hand, Shaoping is looking forward to a trip back to China
