The title “construction electrician” defines a person who, because of his or her knowledge,/ M) x( s- Z7 w. u6 k
training and abilities, is capable of laying out, installing, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical
3 _' Y( e& s/ z4 _ `systems, which provides light, heat, communications, and power to a variety of new and existing
% L" ]. S' Y( tresidential, commercial, and industrial structures.
, l$ i* _$ X6 d C. RConstruction electricians read and interpret electrical, mechanical, and architectural drawings3 J, \2 v; v' p& `
and electrical code specifications to determine wiring layout. They cut, thread, bend, assemble, and0 [" g( A! N4 n& B9 m! p2 ^6 T6 V
install conduits and other types of electrical conductor enclosures and fittings. They pull wire and cable+ F% E- n' Y% t
through conduits, position, maintain and install distribution and control equipment such as switches,
# v! Z: k7 y9 Frelays, circuit breaker panels, and fuse enclosures, install single and multi-wire cables above and7 N( l6 k: |1 W. G; X
underground, install data cabling, and install and maintain fibre optic and signalling systems. S3 M% c; A) W) ^- H
Construction electricians work in the full range of environmental conditions: from outside in
/ I: F4 Y5 U- _8 Yall weathers; inside in dusty industrial plants and mills; to state-of-the-art clean-rooms in hospitals and
( U8 b; o7 R# }# \; @+ o) @manufacturing plants. The work often requires considerable standing, bending, crawling, lifting,. `- M) ]& x9 D- D+ ^) i* J( z
climbing, pulling, and reaching and may be conducted in cramped, confined spaces or on ladders and
* Z1 ]% T8 k) Y, G& f1 d8 Wscaffolding at great heights. Hazards include electric shocks, burns, and falling objects.

% J# _6 `8 T; n' {' ?knowledge of the principles of electricity, circuitry, and power distribution systems, and familiarity with" |' y/ e" ?7 V4 s, \4 K# [
the materials and techniques of construction. All construction electricians are required to be competent in
# g0 p, I+ y2 v8 N3 nthe use of hand and power tools and test equipment.

On small jobs, construction electricians may work alone with minimal supervision, and they B0 l4 H7 D- T ^- V6 L' _
may supervise an apprentice. On large jobs, they may work under the direction of a supervisor.

connections at specific points in the construction cycle.

: V2 P+ h W! u/ E) e7 pwired environment requires construction electricians to be able to install a variety of wiring such as data,
7 v8 f7 J/ W/ [audio, video, signalling, and communication cabling. Electrical control systems are also becoming more
. B$ W' n* `- k$ y; @complex, often solid-state or computer-controlled, which requires the construction electrician to have a# J4 d1 m5 C x8 b% s& ]: s& }
greater knowledge of electronic systems.5 H7 l8 B' e/ i8 l8 f {
