SCOPE OF THE CONSTRUCTION ELECTRICIAN OCCUPATION

training and abilities, is capable of laying out, installing, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical
; T8 O& G7 A) i! G& ?systems, which provides light, heat, communications, and power to a variety of new and existing
! n% E/ N2 h$ y0 p% Z3 `residential, commercial, and industrial structures.
. H1 o4 G! Z0 r& l, ?" W5 C. |Construction electricians read and interpret electrical, mechanical, and architectural drawings
" S9 g/ ]9 i3 mand electrical code specifications to determine wiring layout. They cut, thread, bend, assemble, and; v0 H% \$ p; ?% {8 C
install conduits and other types of electrical conductor enclosures and fittings. They pull wire and cable, d8 M) Z2 W3 V" D. w" B
through conduits, position, maintain and install distribution and control equipment such as switches,
) n% O6 m6 C, n4 m1 v5 v/ srelays, circuit breaker panels, and fuse enclosures, install single and multi-wire cables above and

Construction electricians work in the full range of environmental conditions: from outside in; u a$ x. o7 V+ K* ^2 N" j) S
all weathers; inside in dusty industrial plants and mills; to state-of-the-art clean-rooms in hospitals and
2 c0 O7 ]% L- |5 B8 I& _" Ymanufacturing plants. The work often requires considerable standing, bending, crawling, lifting,
4 c* C$ M8 M$ @' H! p4 h" Eclimbing, pulling, and reaching and may be conducted in cramped, confined spaces or on ladders and: }+ r7 u2 g* [3 d7 A6 I" k% S1 s; O
scaffolding at great heights. Hazards include electric shocks, burns, and falling objects.

( [2 ~: D1 L8 ?. K- ^1 ]knowledge of the principles of electricity, circuitry, and power distribution systems, and familiarity with
3 T/ Q0 u3 G* e# O& S" Othe materials and techniques of construction. All construction electricians are required to be competent in

All electrical wiring and installations must conform to the CSA Canadian Electrical Code.8 A" ^# p9 D) p
Therefore construction electricians must be thoroughly familiar with the latest issue of this document.# u/ G" D; L+ v; X% o
For safety, permits and other regulations they follow local electrical, building and safety codes.

Construction electricians interact and work co-operatively with the full spectrum of, \. D5 X R/ P8 r- w% U/ g

and air-conditioning technicians. They are required to constantly adjust their schedule and work to2 R: T' ^' H+ p8 [2 I
accommodate the schedule of these other trades since most trades rely on some sort of electrical$ q: V' f! x9 P3 o4 D3 K# E
connections at specific points in the construction cycle.

- M" V2 R+ z& Ewired environment requires construction electricians to be able to install a variety of wiring such as data,1 u7 n5 z W) |( j" F- b
audio, video, signalling, and communication cabling. Electrical control systems are also becoming more; p' ? m, l( O' R; q* W! K
complex, often solid-state or computer-controlled, which requires the construction electrician to have a
