Dear colleague: once a year, the Waste Management Branch hosts the
4 x# V4 v4 `/ l5 CMaster Composter-Recycler Program. Over a 3 weeks course schedule9 d+ i) y+ n( ?9 E. i( V# U7 k
(Tues./Thursday evenings and Saturday) volunteers will learn about
4 [: i* ?. C9 `0 o# Qenvironmental stewardship in our city, such as: history of waste0 B+ B3 Q" a/ K
management; home composting; household hazardous waste;: p. V8 l5 e- U3 d: }; \& q
vermin-composting and residential recycling.7 w: Z6 Q# _& z3 l. A5 i
7 Q* p. M0 U' q
This course offers in-class instruction as well as several field trips% y6 [1 c8 U. S
to various City facilities. After finishing the course, graduates
! J& _$ C! |/ S$ p$ t( qcomplete 35 hours of volunteer activity promoting the four R's:
/ f M+ A3 i9 R& A5 {reduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Graduates become important
$ O* Q8 R+ c7 s6 I3 k, Z. e# bresources in their communities as they broaden awareness about the
4 D- ^* @: o2 D M* p5 \importance of composting and recycling.3 o& @$ W* d0 c! A5 R) \
( W4 G* S: f, B, d5 S" U6 E7 G" {Examples of volunteer activities include: help with Reuse Fairs & the
1 s g) P5 ^0 s, e" h" R# QReuse Centre; helping friends/neighbours with composting problems;& O% J4 c% X) ~$ R$ a! o
public education display booths; assisting with programs and% m) U7 @7 }7 u! q2 f
maintenance at the City Compost Education Centres; assisting at. @/ B! s/ X+ Z( K8 U
various demonstration gardens and general public and school' U' R) L6 P6 U5 j
presentations.
