Edmonton's population grows by 30,0006 |; Q% s$ c3 V% |) A0 N( X

0 E: u) ?4 \; j+ X# H0 N* h, T' }EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.

6 g6 Z. L9 R0 c% K" P3 Q" a( rThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.0 ?; A B% f9 H2 t
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.% L: k4 {; R3 V
"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.

This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
