Edmonton's population grows by 30,000! J% V+ ]( Q7 r$ N! b9 o/ t0 R7 j

" Z: I6 W b& @- WEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.

. M, S! u* L+ i( R7 y [ tThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.) c/ W, h1 W" c5 H6 B- \0 Y
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.
' x$ I" @& u( ^' O- z9 H7 Z"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
0 ?# f% o, X1 yEdmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
! Z; x+ |( ~- Y8 G( T* G2 [. ZThis year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
