There is an automatic $25 to $60 reduction in fine if you ask for it.  If you don't ask, you have to pay the full price of the fine.  The amount of reduction depending on the type of  offence.

You do not have to go to court; you do not have to see a judge and you do not have to take time off from work.  Normally it takes 5 to 10 minutes depending how many people just got ahead of you. You can take care of the ticket during your lunch hour.

Background:  In the Canadian judicial system, the court rooms are always overbooked.  In order to get rid of the backlog of courtroom cases, the Alberta Government offers a reduction in fine if you plea guilty to a lesser offence.  (In case of speeding:  you pay the fine for going over 20 kM/hr instead of 30 kM/hr.)

How:  Same procedure as you wound if you are paying for the fine in person, same place, everything the same, but on the date specified on the ticket. Don't go to the cashier, go to the other windows, tell the Justice-of-Peace that you want to plea guilty to a lesser amount, he/she will ask you to take a seat, the Prosecutor will call you in right away, all you have to say is: "I do not believe I was going that fast". nothing else, the fine is automatically reduced, he will say: will you pay this amount? If you agree, then it is done.  If you don't agree, and want to explain why, how, or what ever.  He is not interest to listen, so save your breath.  You can only explain when you are in court.
