Basic Trail Safety
. i/ p! h7 Y- p3 uWaterton Lakes National Park offers a unique brand of challenges - not only in daring, but also certainly in judgment. Be smart! Keep the summer filled with excitement, and follow these guidelines when hiking:% P! z) a+ s( l6 G$ u6 c7 `
. q: w  ^6 B- p
Be sure to hike with someone else, or even better, with a group.
" k; s( g+ @( x$ L" n. mLet someone know your route and expected time of return.
+ _+ F0 t: v: G. j: ZTry to prevent a potentially dangerous close encounter with large animals (like bears) - make noise! Every so often - especially when visibility is blocked by hills, trees, rocks, etc. - hoot and holler or clap hands loudly. In the presence of high winds or streams, make your noise-making efforts all the more intense. ! H4 B7 C/ t" @7 h" n  ^9 }4 A$ d
Be prepared! Have enough food, water, clothes, rain gear and coverings (e.g. space blanket) for an unexpected overnight in the backcountry. % r" [# E5 Y6 z. y7 O, e; @
Use extreme caution around slippery rocks, especially at waterfalls. Learn how to cross unbridged stream and river crossings safely.
7 ^9 d5 J7 e0 E/ YCarry good drinking water with you, or boil "wild water" in order to kill parasites and other germs that may inhabit the park's water. 3 L& K+ j; I* ]6 F4 U. Q9 b2 g
If you are camping overnight, you must have a backcountry camping permit. . i' A) t3 ?$ |+ F4 `' O* j
Become familiar with the national Leave No Trace program. In brief, whatever you pack in to the backcountry, you must pack out.

All campsites in Townsite Campground are on the Parks Canada Reservation system. Located at the south end of the Waterton townsite, this campground offers 238 sites (95 of which are fully serviced), hot showers, flush toilets, food storage and kitchen shelters. There are no individual firepits. This open, mowed lawn campground, exposed to winds from Upper Waterton Lake, is an excellent place for RV's or for those who wish to be within walking distance of town amenities. Reservations are advisable if you plan to travel on a long weekend, or if you require a serviced site. Mule deer, bighorn sheep a ground squirrels are commonly seen in the campground." + D+ g+ w0 E3 v; hCrandell Campground: mid-May to Labour Day ( Fees ) (Campsites are available only on a first-come first-serve basis.)1 A4 _8 A' P# z
Located along the Red Rock Parkway in the scenic Blakiston Valley, this campground is set in a pleasant montane forest. It offers 129 unserviced sites, flush toilets, piped water, kitchen shelters, some fire rings and firewood, food storage, recycling bins, and a dump station. All sites are back-in, and loops may be tight. We recommend that only camping units shorter than 9.5 meters/30 ft use this campground. Crandell Mountain offers some shelter from our predominantly southwest winds, and Crandell Lake is a short 2 km hike from the campground. Mule deer and black bears commonly wander through the campground so our Bare Campsite Program is an important part of the management of the area. Additionally, recent efforts to plant native vegetation are restoring some damaged areas.5 \. h* j! y6 g. D8 V& E7 ^4 I

Located along the Chief Mountain Highway 26 km from Waterton townsite, this self-registration campground offers 24 unserviced sites flush and dry privies, food storage, kitchen shelters, fire rings and fire wood. Bring your own drinking and cooking water, as no potable water is available at this campground. A pleasant area of mixed aspen forest, this primitive campground lies right beside the Belly River, and is favoured by those campers wanting a more secluded experience. Foxes, bear and deer are common through the area. A Campground Host Programme operates in this campground.

Wildlife5 f1 Z0 @9 c! b) e
Animals rely on every part of this landscape for their survival. Their travel routes, natural food sources, mating grounds, and resting sites don't necessarily stop at the campground boundary. This means you may encounter wildlife at any time. Be aware of your surroundings, especially at dusk and dawn, or in densely vegetated areas. Read Keep the Wild in Wildlife for advice on safe viewing practices. Please immediately report all bear, cougar, or coyote sightings to park staff.
! Y9 c7 l: a' H" ^6 }. d% [% Q2 G- c3 Q
Campgrounds in Waterton Lakes National Park have a Bare Campsite program in place. A special effort is being made by park staff and campers to ensure that no wildlife attractants are left unattended at any sites in these campgrounds. The Bare Campsite program is in place for your safety, and to help keep the wildlife in our national parks alive and wild.9 ?2 e, t: s. W% P$ t8 a( r5 K
7 q$ m- |7 A/ Y8 I* k7 b
Anything that has an odour or could be considered food may attract wildlife to your site. Place garbage in bins, avoid cooking inside tents and tent trailers, and store all food supplies, including coolers, in your vehicle. When people leave their food out, bears and other animals attracted to it can lose their fear of humans. Once an animal gets used to human food, it becomes a risk to public safety, and may be destroyed. By keeping a bare campsite, you're playing an important part in preventing the creation of problem animals. $ ]7 G; W( P9 u% f0 A

Wilderness Camping Regulations
: V% A5 H+ F( n) ?$ q3 g  a/ Y# xWilderness camping is permitted at designated sites only. Tents must be placed on tent pads provided at each site. Tent pads measure 2.7m x 2.7 m (9'x9'). There is a limit of one tent per tent pad. Most sites have four tent pads. Maximum party size is six people. Gas stoves are required for cooking at backcountry campsites. Certain sites allow fires in designated fire pits. If you do choose to have a fire, it should be kept small and extinguished completely. Gather only small pieces of dead and down wood. All fires may be prohibited when the fire hazard is extreme. Water sources are available at each campground. Water should be treated or boiled before use. Food must be cooked and consumed at the designated cooking area away from the tent pads. Don't eat or store food near your tent as this could attract wildlife. Store food, cooking gear and garbage on the bear poles provided at each site. You will need to bring 10m (30') of rope. Use the pit toilets provided at each site. Urination around your campsite attracts wildlife and leads to vegetation damage. Remember to bring toilet paper. Don't wash yourself, clothes or cooking gear in lakes or streams. Remove all food scraps from grey water and scatter at least 50m from campsite or water source. Pack out all food remnants along with all your garbage.

You should be able to do all this, plus take in the worthwhile 2-hour boat cruise on Upper Waterton Lake.
