Different universities have different requirements, and it depends on the programs as well. For a lot of good programs, you need about 70 related volunteer hours. For example, if you want to study Social Work at Grant MacEwan, you will need 70 related volunteer hours.6 C; ?' ^8 M; J* x& D
However, it's really good to volunteer. You can get experiece, references, respect...3 A5 m8 h. P2 i+ c+ n6 j

Yes, most of senior homes/centres have pianos! And they do need volunteers to play the music for them. I did few times even though I'm not good at it at all. 
If you need some volunteer information for your son, I'll be more than happy to tell you.
