The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition
3 b1 K d3 l5 g+ i/ n. W$ RRoles and Functions
' G1 }: i" F' d6 r% l, r mThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the3 b; \. C6 q5 x
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the' H% I P' t) C7 T# L
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
- K) K" }' \* `the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,9 ?4 g* t# f, t8 t) }! S
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular
% X' O) o) L6 \! _* C7 B) R$ i: Zboard meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
1 }5 s6 I9 u9 dconducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an% o9 L5 a) j) `8 [, K5 A
employee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
9 Z2 J+ {/ e& D% Vstaff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend; ]" j) h0 e- q. \7 ]- L* a" z
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:

2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
7 z2 k4 [% v) |3 porganizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations: G% G% \1 u" _9 }% |
and public institutions8 r1 E3 e" o1 s& R- l4 n
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through
. x# W6 G& p. F: `' v( S. Ffunding opportunities and maintaining initiatives% y7 t, @" Z6 |# t( R* d8 A% Z2 }/ a# [
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community
; b: g* z0 R$ vorganizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with

6. Advances the community animation process as a bridging strategy for civic
, k* G8 L% d/ E- ~participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society# B; M% n O& T: B
7. Offer opportunities for service providers to learn and experience working9 b/ ]4 S" W& d3 |
with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically
: z0 i, _& h4 ~# Ldiverse backgrounds5 i2 x, D& h2 ~* h( f

Administrative responsibilities:$ E7 i( x& ?/ n7 t
1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its$ F5 H! L k2 P, ^* t1 [6 e
regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of( ^8 l# t1 ^) C! _' x
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
" W5 K( P3 W* u4 P0 C2 Q, b2 pmembers of the Coalition’s financial condition., y( P' k8 V; G1 M& r3 e8 H6 H
2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the
5 p/ A1 ]. X! i; t$ d* cMulticultural Coalition7 w5 {$ ~! a3 t- P; N
Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board
, C' X' `+ w- E C* u3 lAll operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to: t+ X# o1 A! f5 V& ]
implement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
! I! b" d" Q- H4 koperations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
' l2 ]: Y, ^' @The Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and
+ H3 @! s5 @) M( iaims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should, Y- D+ H, ? W# C# z
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
( ^$ W4 D4 n" E8 Tparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and$ m# l3 [) P% ?: ~
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of G' J Q2 m; B1 o/ A$ R" Y+ _: D
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
% }% e, L6 H* ~( T3 q4 ^statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all
8 @2 m2 C! y b$ H& _matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of9 Z" T+ F5 T0 j2 O! T& n
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of4 e+ j9 v6 J% I4 F) b8 s* V$ X
policies already adopted
