I was facing the same decision for couple month until 18-35G came along; I did a quick comparison between 18-35G, 16-35G & 20-35D:

Sharpness 16G>18G>20D(they are very close, 18G extreme corners never got sharp, so does the 20D); 18G has some distortion on wide end but less than 16G on 16mm, 20D has minimum distortion compare to the G’s; 16G & 18G is about same on color rendering, 20D has better color for my eyes especially under dim light; Size 16G>18G=20D; Weight 16G(680g)>20D(640g)>18G(385g)

X9 R+ h% N$ [+ JI was looking for a Lens for Hiking/Landscape, base on the copies I tested, 18G has big advantage on weight/size/price and more or less same optical performance, I can live without VR and the extra 2mm reach. At end they are all decent performers, it’s just down to what you need and what you will use lens for and of cause how deep is your pocket. Good luck picking one.
