Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall4 a \9 k' i5 H R9 `, l
not do any of the following:
8 T H/ h' X+ B2 `" q8 p(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
! z7 U C# z8 |- r L+ Yvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;+ Z: |2 W: {! N
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
4 ]) f8 w, K! j: Yvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
) O/ x; _- d' n( P(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,. P6 a. G* Q0 T3 Y7 j/ R- w
permit another person
% d% e+ f% j2 ^( k(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or9 M4 W2 ^8 C, z6 s2 F y
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
3 p, M; |. r4 L! ~unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;& |& j+ e7 m% F+ j2 `/ D
(d) give or lend a financial
$ } |: B0 l& W0 z$ wresponsibility card or a copy of it. [" a6 } z% z) o# C4 W4 W- U
to a person not entitled to have that financial8 b8 W1 y6 M! t$ s; M! o
responsibility card or copy.

: r5 A/ r$ y% JIf a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
4 h8 l1 D7 J* E" @without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
7 @" l4 f( Q/ \1 Q# z! W7 m* rthe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection5 _& _6 D, \6 H- ]8 F9 d* }( p3 W
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is
7 d, l6 g, {7 Jnot an insured motor vehicle.% E% }6 s! S9 l- y! S( ]$ e2 E
(2)5 l$ v7 }: ^2 q7 c: k* q5 R
If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
' Z# z& J5 Y, n0 G3 NAct, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this) ]" e/ Y+ ?! F$ o: l
section.
# N8 o/ Z L* m8 e, P* o& v; t(3)! g/ t) r+ c" ~5 ~1 X* }+ D
Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a
) f4 _2 E9 d4 ^financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
+ ^0 i/ W. H- |/ `9 t& @Insurance Act
# m4 m% H! k% a2 d: rby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy! k7 b: P& T3 z% I' f- U! V
outside Alberta.
5 @1 T' R! Y" s( A(4)
6 {+ Z5 `+ Q C7 d T( ?A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
+ d3 O3 ?0 E, g5 A6 ?(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable," }/ c+ p0 F6 X5 R0 c
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500" n% k& q4 T, B) N( B
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to! U; I+ r$ g; A H
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
! t3 `0 v8 A' F, @1 g l" O8 o! vmore than 6 months
. m1 M1 w6 {% N b0 RMinimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
