Newcomers are being offered some help when shopping for a home in Edmonton’s tight housing market. ' I3 [+ b1 N( a; r' j
Immigrant women and their families can now access a “household toolkit” crafted by a local service group for new immigrant families, through real estate agents. + L+ l6 R) j% h& H

In the tool kit are 75 common hand tools – like a hammer and screwdriver – as well a book on how to buy a home, a home maintenance schedule and other items.

“The tools are a symbol of hope for people trying to build new lives in Edmonton,” said Madeline Sarafinchan, president of the Edmonton Real Estate Board. ( J2 b& f! W% y+ x n& w

The program was announced by a group called Changing Together… A Centre for Immigrant Women. % ~, [ ^# \6 [9 b, W

Josephine Pallard, the group’s executive director, said Alberta’s economic boom has caused a housing shortage that makes it more difficult for immigrants to find a place to live and integrate into Canadian society.
