Statistics Canada has just released their latest report on how the average salaries that Canadians are earning. And it turns out that we’re taking home a little more than we were a year earlier.7 o. i, w* o0 d6 i' J

% X% w# T! r' e. u2 K% d' C3 yAt the end of last year, as of December 2014, the average wage for Canadian employees was $943 a week – or just over $49,000 a year. This marks a 2% increase over the same period a year earlier.1 o6 g1 X  q! k3 k6 k7 j

Average Canadian wage changes by industry sector

9 e& B) _0 L$ K& O" E; ?: jOver the past year, the largest gains in salary were seen in the professional, scientific and technical services field where earnings increased 5.0% to $70,310. These gains were spread across most industries in this sector. The largest increase was in architectural, engineering and related services, followed by accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping and payroll services.

0 I" M5 k( J- fThose in the accommodation and food services trade also saw their incomes go up over last year by 4.2% to $19,656.) o8 q0 o6 J' I! q

So who’s making well above the average wage?
' |" z% G# o- m/ ^; a! `) `* ?9 i# S4 v% Y' @( h
Well, Specialist Physicians top the list of well compensated professionals at a whopping $350,000 a year. Judges are also high earners, bringing in an average of $260,000 annually.
% X1 ?: ^) P  \; P! A( c7 y; N( e8 `& a& W5 s3 \
Other high-earning positions:

6 v$ z' I0 p: G. n& G; T7 dSenior managers of financial, communications, and other businesses – $225,500/year & V& w2 i; t5 C" i
Senior managers of goods production, utilities, transportation, and construction – $205,000/year 1 x1 T) T. ~4 z& [6 {9 a+ h
General practitioners and family physicians – $180,000/year
' X! _8 [6 D2 X6 U: @5 k) dDentists – $175,000/year
: i7 R) Z5 A( U5 JLawyers – $165,000/year - W* i$ X$ O7 [, B' J; i! Z! I; @
Actuaries earn $155,000
' p6 j5 }2 b6 SEngineering managers – $137,000 - }5 N0 X( F; E' N, ]) [! v4 C
Top paid Airline Pilots make $138,000 9 X6 d2 q4 Q7 H* B6 N8 n# j# S

7 }5 k* W$ Y* z; K: [6 m& S
: J* W: l0 `+ |' @9 N% v3 a* hLooking the qualifications needed to land one of the highest paying gigs, the lesson seems to be: if you want to earn the big bucks, stay in school.

And how about our national leaders? The Prime Minister, Stephen Harper makes $327,400 a year. Members of Parliament make $163,700 a year and the Governor General earns $270,602 annually. Senators make $135,200 – plus y’know… expenses.
