. m/ e, S6 v1 pI am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
3 s9 U& [; B( l% p& e. Sam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,7 B. K! v- Q( x. Y' E2 p
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and" m* \7 h) q# K
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
" ?( M* W) |* a3 _6 T. awill acquire language earlier and faster.7 V' x7 U$ W# D& {' q
6 o9 m" ]% ?6 a
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
6 m. G' Z& V% s1 A% G/ _30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop; Z: b+ L# ^ V T; U
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or; j( t& j& O: p# C+ u% C2 G& Z3 ?
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you: k V; }& I' t
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your* i- D" R6 B. D3 S
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
0 q- E& x; P9 T$ n4 O$ L1 j2 m' W7 E$ S0 N
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common0 _2 z" @: e7 {- b# N% B. f
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and2 I1 Z# G" x9 {2 L2 p ]! H7 ?
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

% X7 D- @7 x( A ]0 GStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously( C R z+ }! `
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby9 ^3 G# Z3 V3 {- N9 g3 y
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to1 v* c) A! k* O& j) O
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes. p9 L0 P1 R% k* W7 W- x
( B" T% W% B0 d# a( ^9 i6 O2 S
Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
, H0 Q) p8 P3 j P. E1 T6 u7 ]over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
5 J* U, ?0 c; V; d# a. U; @is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will( v% `% B! \% k# w- `
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate9 S, M1 t" ^; _& z- v
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.- z$ ?! e' S( R) F8 h
As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
+ L3 s5 v8 }, P0 g$ ware stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show* _4 N% P& s* G) Q
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
0 ~" k& h' O/ O( O, G" Qin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and" y; Q7 K5 P. c0 @3 r Y
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,; Q* ~1 u; C' B+ B" w O; a; J
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of, C. e$ `7 W% Z! z& `
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
) q) z5 T$ \5 rjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child7 z7 g$ [) P0 }+ P% J$ p% d
and the parents participating in this study.
