am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,, l* u+ m- l+ {9 z7 ?9 x. [
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
' ^4 k A; d, ?5 J4 Qattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them' e1 v% [# s( ^& k; }7 T n/ @3 M
will acquire language earlier and faster.* l0 ]- j' Z( a1 x( ^6 A

In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
. w h6 t' z" g0 n- A30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
# K/ J) _' v: i, M6 }( }videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
1 t o9 y' K' i# f( l, u; @+ W6 Csimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you9 S3 q6 r" U, @6 ~7 D
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
1 |/ V* d) V6 i$ o1 C5 [% G& xbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.9 c: {. u7 \0 v! n( C( b# C! j% v# r
7 d6 o0 C( n3 A- ^% N* c5 zAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common5 C2 V5 c+ C' S( `3 _' h/ G; `
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
/ ?: T* Z1 v4 X" c( mthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously( k- D* W2 C8 a$ W
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
9 k) B7 h' K. ]9 |+ iknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
8 S, j7 t7 f. J1 z3 Jthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

9 ~7 Y8 Y# k0 Y9 NFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,& U% \0 G5 M2 V! ^) D
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.0 ^; e- r' J! F
: ?, |" W2 `5 f5 GThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done! O: k6 N* y J( l8 J5 Q" @$ c
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
' y' x' a6 I C7 b6 r8 N$ u3 Uis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will

1 ?, t# J- w5 a5 {As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data$ c& |# l7 \6 j0 D5 h7 a. N" ^
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show4 O# o h& y* o6 o7 z T" v5 r
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used* a1 F! `" h w# a' i
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and' a j. L5 L+ q1 ]
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
/ s- ?0 n7 @- W; ]/ }and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
% U, [7 i: j8 ^( UHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific8 {# x" I- Q, H9 B6 t y
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
