I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I2 Z x' R) S6 H V1 x; [( o
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,6 L0 Z; b* t) r9 N7 n$ [8 G
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
$ C5 I, K3 m/ B6 M; oattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
7 \4 H' z, i: u- B* a$ Rwill acquire language earlier and faster.
- R8 E8 f! S' w- q H4 A! `! A I. I5 [3 b! k4 K- i
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
4 H, g2 t$ P% c+ |8 b- ] d30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop! H" v W3 h- n
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
1 F- X) L6 I) J. n2 K6 B7 @: A6 A3 }simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
' y7 ]5 w) o n& F `4 i# F, Y: Tmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your Z' O2 S4 H, b& E! c
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

9 D J, d* u. X3 z& s2 qAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common- ~& |0 C# { S
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and, G$ d! V% T4 c$ y# A& W
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.9 N8 m1 b) h- m
; Q! ^0 M1 {& U' e% f2 v7 n% v
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously# n& ^& O( V$ O( x2 f9 b
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
5 l3 X2 i q0 r2 Lknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to% T! D) k# ?% O
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
; n& g, }& D- v: qthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects., x/ n6 ?* [. X' Z

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
9 j" |! T' ?. p, ^: Jover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
5 `( m% r+ u- S! I5 G. o! Ais 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
' Z1 q s$ R, C5 `take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
! k) Q! v5 g {are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show7 N* w5 e$ q# t3 ^: p
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used' b8 c- b: \# G' g% {) C: }0 ]' {
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and$ X+ Q5 f% i( H+ w
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
0 Y. j" _- }" O f1 band teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of( K; K. C5 d) T( q3 a( l* `1 H4 Q
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific" o* x$ B4 X; e8 ^
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
