I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I0 A5 c( o# s1 r# e+ I
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
, W) V. s* m% ]+ b- | dconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
" `6 B7 t: ~* S: s" Pattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
i9 Q9 k; F( |+ ~; `* P5 M# Twill acquire language earlier and faster.

8 b) a& J$ \6 ]9 vIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately0 L( q Q# C B6 E, u; O/ W
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop; T3 g0 P0 H7 z4 ?/ a/ q
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or/ Z# O2 z( s' l" |" T
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you( o0 Y- _/ _$ s
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
7 q% c; W) I5 Lbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.% s, I0 k9 l1 i1 H: Y0 \% S; A
4 Y" M4 _+ g ]( O$ D. mAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
! ?9 B1 E- R Ubehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and7 ?, y/ m( M/ ^- t9 @- `
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

9 u# J c- d7 C \% |) AStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously9 S# F( t% d( [6 |
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
5 w& O! E, f1 e- wknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
8 D$ j, z6 i2 v! W) j+ R2 S$ Wthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.8 M5 U' r+ f; }, V0 E7 {

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,2 `; g/ }1 }) @1 M- n: o
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

9 k/ e( a' x" ]! O0 uThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
& ^2 M" ?2 j7 W: \( E8 c8 `over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
2 S! _4 v, }* z/ W. A" @4 `is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will. m4 Q7 K) T: ~1 U) x
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate" P. U" ~& S+ B: D* A i

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
' h+ Y% ^& d6 p: X' Hare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
4 C w' y. j" [2 [- o3 p' U, mvideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
}# d* t% g1 x5 c5 O/ d4 Nin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and! m4 G6 V! ~2 R. z
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,- o6 v+ G6 j; f
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of4 P5 n* Z5 I* o" [. c* }4 c
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
' @' x+ m$ u6 E, i! E2 u0 n/ gjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child7 F- T- |( N" z6 @, ]3 a4 I" e
and the parents participating in this study.
