I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
( ]8 l+ t. m& I* l0 T1 c7 Qam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,/ ?* [% w% J0 G: M4 ]! q1 v& D
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and1 F3 _8 m1 u. t9 {+ Y! r: K
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them" X+ l: N9 H$ M V* M6 a
will acquire language earlier and faster.( P6 {/ w$ S5 S3 P* M; _5 M; s* s, e0 ~
3 o: z r. u6 c. q& FIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
6 O4 H) D" t7 d" f, R30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
; ^* G+ e1 V3 X8 bvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
3 L% h1 k- N( osimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you# c0 S N5 f7 j O' F; ?
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your2 u \* ?. q" x; N1 P% @/ t( O
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
: i, n3 Q: e/ e' Q/ P3 j& q+ R# N6 b+ u: u! V
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common' \4 j$ V f/ k6 ?
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
& L9 o8 W0 e% E. V! W1 E. Z3 [ cthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
0 K5 C- M/ x: g) c5 X& z+ p' nproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby; I" Z3 _8 `( N4 |5 z5 G8 N
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to4 j! o; ?/ V& E
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
; P ^/ S6 s- z Zthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

' c, d0 Z6 c0 k7 p5 x9 m" XThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
" u+ v) @; b; Cover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
6 a, S1 B) p6 B' X% Xis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
, B o* A" j! r+ b# z7 |- g, `2 stake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

7 y( H& T4 F$ WAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
9 v, P" h- \5 x9 Q1 Z' nare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show' a, Y( g3 S. W* l
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
! g& n# h" R( jin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and( T" }( i0 p* ~# v& C$ K) E
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
" B) @9 P+ G" | Fand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of+ f1 q6 Z5 [1 \
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific1 Z4 i G3 l2 d2 E! X! c) j
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
