Edmonton – Mill Woods is one of the city’s most diverse ridings, with people who have immigrated from all over the world calling it home.7 c% _; W% u5 N2 X0 p
* v- j( W& O# l* Y* o1 h+ jAs a result, immigration and controversial laws around citizenship are coming up a bit more often on the doors, say candidates.
9 ] @ B# [* R. O O7 v# B; O4 u- uConservative candidate Tim Uppal said his party has an excellent record on welcoming newcomers.& g- X2 [" s4 |" J/ `0 T i

“Under this government, we have had the highest levels of sustained immigration in Canadian history,” he said.

3 r- F6 ]) A3 KUppal also defends bill C-24, legislation that allows the government to strip citizenship from dual citizens convicted of terrorism or treason. He said when someone has been convicted and served their time of a charge as serious as terrorism it’s common sense to deport them.
/ q( G: ^! W7 [7 i3 |3 J“If we can have their citizenship stripped, because they’re a dual citizen, than I would rather not have them in this country,” he said.) Y7 f8 O% @& M7 @* K6 y; _5 ^

Liberal candidate Amarjeet Sohi said the Conservative bill is discriminatory, treating Canadians with dual citizenship as unequal.
$ E& Z) ^5 z; y“It will not make us safe,” he said. “Every Canadian should be treated the same, you can’t have different punishments for the same crime.”
% X6 z; e/ |/ ?; ISohi said he would prefer convicted terrorist stay within the reach of Canadian law.

$ \" c# z% n3 x, WNDP candidate Jasvir Deol said the bill has many immigrant communities worried.
