I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro. 6 a; P9 p r; n9 u% X8 U1 e
He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money + K5 f" F: e8 r* o
for youth at risk programs.

The last time I was there he introduced me by saying, 'I want to tell you

man who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable 5 z, y7 O, A9 k: s. |1 w
to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training
: ]6 j/ h/ _. {' M" _4 j- y3 V: y1 U! khorses. As a result, the boy's high school career was continually interrupted. & f5 r/ c) ^: G8 H* T3 H" ?
When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted 7 l A6 w& y; Q$ e' Z D T6 L
to be and do when he grew up. 4 h8 k, J: G' D" ?* M

'That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday ; |5 J+ z3 @( `, u2 U/ s, ^$ |
owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even ' [" E9 I3 W# p2 z/ m# @
drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, 6 K3 U: s3 T: t0 E! h, v) V+ d
the stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot
# h/ u K! p, G7 Fhouse that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch.

) Q7 V1 r3 W6 z4 ['He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he
( U9 x$ m. A/ s( thanded it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. ) b& ?4 S: D' Z; l$ p; h' v
On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, `See me after ) v9 K% A, Y3 J/ A3 p/ S/ n) `( X
class.'

You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources.

added, `If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will 2 e; q& [; s6 ]/ [4 a5 ]& J
reconsider your grade.’

4 r* D1 ^3 t- L: t'The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father

own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for

paper, making no changes at all. He stated, `You can keep the F and I'll

because you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of % _: G! Y1 Z" F% G- c4 h
my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the
# [% j2 K7 k1 L8 _1 v) yfireplace.' He added, 'The best part of the story is that two summers ago # m4 T: C% l4 f+ q1 }, K
that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week.'

now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During
