An Edmonton-based trucking coming is facing $3 million dollars worth of fines under the Traffic Safety Act for allegedly operating overweight vehicles on city roads.
0 [* l- e  A- K1 P  _A police investigation revealed that between August 15 and September 19, the unnamed company made 1,907 trips to the waste management facility located on Yellowhead Trail and 170 Street.
  [4 r, _8 r: `9 ?  m4 R0 f0 D) F& PPolice say the trucks were transporting loads that were overweight by a least one tonne each visit. One truck was recorded as being 17.9 tonnes overweight.
"The company is facing a fine of just over $3 million dollars," said EPS Const. Dave Beattie. "It's a big fine, I'll give you that, but for the police it's not about the value of the fine, it's about keeping these roads safe."
- R6 P9 V) I* Q- g, R  w* {2 B! vBeattie explains that with overweight vehicles, braking can be a problem.
"The last thing I'm sure you, and any of us want, is to be in front of a vehicle that is basically 17 tonnes over what it's allowed to be on the road when you stop at a red light."
Beattie added that roadways can be destroyed by overweight vehicles since they cause cracks and potholes.
The company is due in court on Thursday, December 3.
