Today I was volunteering at a post office. A man in an old jacket with uncombed hair came to the counter. He had a wallet in his hand, and put it on the counter. He told me: $ |& V2 y; S2 q$ T- R+ d. [& G
"I am going to send it back".
* ^7 H( d& l! {( K; T$ GI did not understand what he meant by "it", because usually people would send a letter or a parcel back to the sender, and I did not see he had any of those. So I asked him:
% ^) {$ ?: q ~1 T# I6 T3 n "I am sorry, what are you sending back?" + F) t; z" |* g( U
He said, "the Wallet, I am sending back the wallet." Then he added: "I am going to pay the postage."
: ]7 a& v8 t" l l$ @"Oh, you found a wallet, and you are going to send it back to the person who lost it?" - _: M, L1 j! \
"Yes, I did."3 B. P: L8 m3 f u4 Y) `) o* o# O9 P
Finally I understood: this dishevelled man found a wallet, and he was going to return it to the owner by post. - z9 W5 f% P h0 @. c& R. z6 M
He took the ID card from the wallet, and showed me the address of the loser of the wallet. I saw there were several one-hundred bills in the wallet. f5 s5 D3 S0 z4 p0 o7 A. j
"Are you going to take some money from the wallet to pay the postage?". Z' N9 H+ a2 f! }4 I
"No, I am not. I do not do those things."
" F$ Z7 A8 v& S2 k' L% rHe took out his wallet, which was nearly worn-out, small, and almost empty. There were some coins inside.
' w; g4 F2 @/ x! | t- rI gave him a bubbled envelope, and instructed him where to write the addresses. He wrote the owner's address, but stopped at writing a return address. He asked:+ @6 ]& r4 r; Z( P- W* o
"Is it okay that I do not write this part?"
( ?1 @3 K( ~/ N% I2 I) m* v5 f+ f"Yes, you may." I thought he must want to be a nameless hero. But he said:
C5 ]2 X) A& f. v"I do not have an address."
' q/ ?6 d- F0 i7 Y0 hI was surprised: "oh, where do you live?". F6 x& L% F9 E) j( U8 I5 m6 v
He did not look up, and said: "I do not have a home."; ^* e( ]/ t z8 c7 @
My heart had a sudden jump. I realized that this is a homeless man who found money but was sending it back to the person who lost it.
' _" L" P! d+ S r# wHe did not a posses a home, but he had a big heart. He had the precious fortune of being a man of integrity. ) O, C: D/ t h" F
