CHIEF RETURNING OFFICER

Remuneration: $6,032.00 contract

JOB SUMMARY:  The Chief Returning Officer reports to the President of  / i- e9 |; {- V* w
the Students' Union and oversees all electoral logistics as per Bylaw  
5 ~3 |" b, x1 y! }$ f5 v2000.  The Chief Returning Officer shall be recommended to Students'  1 g) U" {8 m3 w: T( l- _& p
Council in the manner set out in the Council Administration Committee  
* |- Z6 R1 S( C2 CStanding Orders by April 15 and serve from May 1 to April 30 of the  
2 @1 C, n9 K% ^5 Q" S5 s! @' Jyear following their appointment.

8 v) y( S# l1 z) P/ FDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:4 [: D4 n+ s/ U7 H! o  S  |) m- q. j

2 i$ N* U" }+ h1) To run the elections as per Bylaws 2000
$ D, D5 M/ o- r6 i1 _! D; S& P* z2 G. U5 \2 K, c, L4 T1 }
2) To run referenda/plebiscites as per Bylaw 2000.: B( o; w) I* l& _8 ?

  S6 f# n* w, B* U3) To choose the Deputy Returning Officer(s) and assign their duties.
3 u; H# C& }/ l( R( c8 R8 F
, v! T& w$ z+ I: c, B4) To organize polls during elections/referenda, including appointing  
8 ^1 @" K! @" r4 W8 U* }" @adequate poll staff and situating polls at appropriate locations  , E8 O: V/ X, ]0 s0 M/ l. m2 P
across campus, and advertising the poll locations.

2 z2 q2 ~( E* z1 I. g3 O5) To oversee the physical count of the ballots during elections/ , [" a) O* {7 b
referenda.

6) To report the result of an election/referendum to the appropriate  * Q* z; s. o8 l3 Z
parties.! }3 E: P: P/ g8 G- ~: _, E* G/ l

; J- ^9 X# w  G- u& `7) To facilitate classroom speaking arrangements during an election/
/ r+ u, Z, w% D7 P9 Treferendum.

To enforce budgetary regulations as stipulated in the Elections  
* \% h0 D% ?) LBylaw 2000.6 U: L% s6 ^1 i3 @2 f; e) j

10) To be available to all parties during elections/referenda for a  ) M/ G5 \# Z: I0 \7 P
minimum of four (4) working hours a day, between Monday to Friday,  2 f$ }" r8 c, u, \- J" t
from the first working day after nominations close until the last day  
# Z  @' a8 Y) F: g, }# b/ bof voting.  These hours are to be posted in advance.8 y. \) ^+ s7 ~7 O

7 k3 i) e3 |2 y6 X$ B11) To act as the arbitrator in any dispute which may arise during  9 n+ |, t6 j- Z) b( c
the course of an election/referendum.

! k. `0 t1 ?) ~) Y9 a& Z12) To ensure that a cost effective and accurate ballot counting  * r/ @3 ]& }6 b" ^# N2 ^4 d! n4 g
process is in place.

  y0 n! S0 S0 s" F, M9 K0 S( _13) To submit to Students' Council, prior to April 30, a final report  * |- W2 M" \6 d' x
of activities and recommendations.

$ N. t3 v  R+ ?14) To organize a minimum of one (1) forum to be held during the week  
8 D6 D) O" o1 j* f9 Mof campaigning./ A4 F$ H5 l0 r$ y( _* p: C

15) Perform other job related duties as required by the Council  3 b- t0 Z& ?& Q& K' T

  G0 h2 S" g- ], L, H1) Must be an undergrad student registered in at least one (1) course  " [% [$ k3 C" n4 Q  I7 {$ A
for each of the terms of Winter Session and shall be a full Students'  
/ D; J4 g5 i4 {Union member.5 n/ I: A) s8 J1 S1 m
+ D* _5 d- s) Z
2) Must have some experience in student elections.
0 \  z: o. e0 o: ]' K7 e5 ?0 o0 P+ x( V; M8 a5 ^" }' f( @
3) Shall not concurrently hold a position on Students' Council, or  
: Q9 W+ M( j- x) Q, Many of its standing boards, committees, or any other paid position  1 v7 g8 Q1 }1 [3 V% u. k7 K
with the Students' Union.

; E4 V0 \# `! ^+ \; E1 N1 D" q& C4) Willingness and ability to work varying hours.+ a+ Y! r% \% S( g: N% C. ]

5) Ability to deal effectively with Students' Union and University
