CHIEF RETURNING OFFICER

Remuneration: $6,032.00 contract

JOB SUMMARY:  The Chief Returning Officer reports to the President of  
: w3 P: O) B) j" h6 x- D' g' t# |the Students' Union and oversees all electoral logistics as per Bylaw  
5 F" T/ W4 X" @9 o4 Z2000.  The Chief Returning Officer shall be recommended to Students'  
' \$ a4 K0 b" \Council in the manner set out in the Council Administration Committee  + j4 @3 V# _! F. |7 l3 `& q  y
Standing Orders by April 15 and serve from May 1 to April 30 of the  
* H/ ]4 Q! C  O$ q& ^8 W/ d& jyear following their appointment.* e7 r6 c. v2 t& {/ V/ n( c, V

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

' [2 t6 l1 D5 \1) To run the elections as per Bylaws 2000( p' ?' r3 {" b/ _3 ^% Q$ A

1 W/ @! t  L$ K1 T4 \6 |8 o2) To run referenda/plebiscites as per Bylaw 2000.0 a4 n( O  m: h/ g

$ ]4 L1 c) W9 V! ^8 B; V( ~3) To choose the Deputy Returning Officer(s) and assign their duties.$ _$ R/ M, w9 y# f# O6 U8 X
* |4 {8 x6 x" U  y6 B6 T* `$ k
4) To organize polls during elections/referenda, including appointing  
7 r  C/ E# Y! o+ N% ^! u2 oadequate poll staff and situating polls at appropriate locations  
$ }7 Q) i( f- B! O( H% Iacross campus, and advertising the poll locations.0 l5 Y, ]3 J' M8 K

& j; A+ _8 z: W  I, {6 z5 a5) To oversee the physical count of the ballots during elections/
2 C; N8 j" q# ~! N; `referenda.
( j% C5 Q) p: _2 G9 b! N3 r: E& P
3 E; p4 {2 I2 J  c. R2 C6) To report the result of an election/referendum to the appropriate  
7 ^% e" B( ]- Eparties.

7) To facilitate classroom speaking arrangements during an election/ 4 Q' B( I8 c( {7 m4 b5 x$ `  `
referendum.

To enforce budgetary regulations as stipulated in the Elections  
4 y) e% ?3 n. vBylaw 2000.
5 e/ p* j/ ?! Q' `5 z2 V1 e# E3 E, c/ I: @& ]; U
10) To be available to all parties during elections/referenda for a  
* z* {; O& e' R; q2 e! m1 @7 x3 Bminimum of four (4) working hours a day, between Monday to Friday,  
3 x2 R+ c  o: U4 K2 P( w9 mfrom the first working day after nominations close until the last day  3 g# [, F3 u, ?( m% M1 g$ r8 W  [
of voting.  These hours are to be posted in advance.' x9 U- s0 j+ K6 h

# E* E" V& v2 @7 {/ b+ R; y9 r. \6 l11) To act as the arbitrator in any dispute which may arise during  ' ?# V# V7 v7 o  d3 [
the course of an election/referendum.

7 n: D* n# o7 A% I( K' p* R12) To ensure that a cost effective and accurate ballot counting  6 B, S  G9 L- n
process is in place.& b8 Q. ~4 d) {5 m  m5 F

13) To submit to Students' Council, prior to April 30, a final report  
9 n; J- q$ P" |9 {2 y1 Iof activities and recommendations.

( }8 ~) a- W- ]5 ]- Q8 w14) To organize a minimum of one (1) forum to be held during the week  
( V+ A/ Q! m# Z9 R9 z9 V0 lof campaigning.4 Z6 q' p0 _0 W6 `7 @3 c( ~1 F

% N" A3 e. V. k2 w0 e3 F  `15) Perform other job related duties as required by the Council

QUALIFICATIONS:
* ?) A9 r1 v1 {( C4 Y, F5 n7 e. ~: m  \/ k4 L
1) Must be an undergrad student registered in at least one (1) course  
5 {9 Q9 b0 B, q8 G2 ofor each of the terms of Winter Session and shall be a full Students'  
! U# A$ j  c# T2 U7 }5 wUnion member.5 o1 `5 N$ z  g( [9 U0 d
% ~- I1 D) d1 l% l+ z
2) Must have some experience in student elections.
5 k9 L5 z6 ]7 m# O2 M/ u
6 K' g* W# W) P+ U3) Shall not concurrently hold a position on Students' Council, or  ' m: x7 f; u& [3 y
any of its standing boards, committees, or any other paid position  ' h' ?" O3 J5 u0 G, y
with the Students' Union.* J( |( G. O7 `+ s

4) Willingness and ability to work varying hours.
