Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 4 X9 Q5 \* m; I7 }7 A$ m9 q
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad ) v1 f: s3 y9 U
news to report from that meeting.
j) d' I) `" n/ a: i0 s* x7 _1 Q+ v6 B4 w/ F/ @
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
+ r7 w2 z2 D+ y9 Xundergraduate international students from the increase to the
3 ~4 Q% K+ y" {' E( \0 _9 zdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
+ J2 k" @5 T( B3 Z& ~) pstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
, V0 |; {5 ] }1 |( |+ `. btuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). a! I& ]& S( f4 ?
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
3 d4 E) Y: ~$ w: \the differential for international graduate students.

/ o' ~* R. P% b! ~" jNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
7 G4 k# t( `, r/ k: S: Pincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to / D s) g$ X+ C( M
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students * Y' y' a! U6 [7 `# R
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 4 x' s. a1 _8 z
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
5 I' n( h2 o4 j( {1 Otuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
) v B6 p0 ^6 {% ]+ pincreases once they are here.4 n7 u7 B* D1 X9 @/ p
4 Y: E, ^) B8 mThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
/ k, I1 m2 `, r" M+ t6 \) t* @international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
9 h: D( B( g$ u' @$ z9 f+ Wwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
" X$ B9 h5 L7 A- ]- [: F8 l0 ^have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
