F8 V. U, Y- n; L3 q% d% ZGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 7 h+ y) h; h) s
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
5 {6 q2 i* G% n, z% @news to report from that meeting.3 o, _1 [5 n7 l2 H+ e6 N. v7 c7 d
6 u! x* f/ Q4 |8 cFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current 3 T# [" J% ^$ p- q3 ~6 h2 M. ]2 ?
undergraduate international students from the increase to the : c1 v( C, d8 x g. a% s) D
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
1 V, l) @# M- h+ b8 _8 n4 k! f) vstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base 8 w9 F- P# r+ L
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 7 T8 u C7 G$ J* ]/ E7 i
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase 0 k, z H% N/ k; l5 A
the differential for international graduate students.

Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an ( N. I6 ]! z; q% N0 M7 @6 w8 w5 N
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
- D. c% C( A8 b* q* ?* }8 I; x, X220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students * H/ j) s' Z" y0 S, i- l9 X1 p2 ?
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
2 Y5 [1 l- Z3 I) r, yleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
P6 N' C X% E0 ctuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
+ x8 u: ?* i* }" i. D1 [* L2 H8 Kincreases once they are here.

$ n: X+ T3 N& i1 s0 cThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the 9 I. J) |! z# j0 Q- V# L+ _
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
