Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. 7 U3 e% u! q' a! z. Q

( B; j% k5 k& i( \. L$ DYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties ) A J4 }) l D- s
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
5 i5 i/ |8 ?. t$ s M* hnews to report from that meeting.8 `! c& A5 q* s* l5 O
2 {5 G" P+ G4 F* h2 y) b: n4 j( X6 ?
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
6 l* N: W8 x* E9 h7 p. r5 x/ |3 nundergraduate international students from the increase to the
6 B1 {% O' t& a+ Rdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international * J4 G' s. ]( v/ t1 a" w! @
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
: j% _' z$ g' |# z3 B) ^% ]" |: z* ntuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). ! r1 \7 ]5 s. ~# o& @
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase 6 ~1 j3 ?2 K( h$ ^: t. g+ d$ S. c' p
the differential for international graduate students./ N' b: l& l8 ^! g
' Y( ?! @' z* ?4 J% E; {3 ZNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
4 v! I& Z' O% W: _2 g; m. wincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
$ Y& h" Z$ z: G; W6 ~) y5 x9 |; @220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
9 | \* Y. j6 c- Iwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
$ Y) h9 f1 }1 W" ]- Wleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
( U2 P1 ~) W' F9 ?# h9 Ytuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
+ z. L; V' I1 [6 K4 |& ^international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I : h7 ~' B) u: e& L
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that 8 t3 E3 _( @0 y
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this , c4 Q" U( v! M8 u: x, \/ S
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
