Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. $ n/ g% w& p: G8 |7 N% B

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
1 I1 c7 |8 i0 F" [" b% r; eCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
' o" \, W: I! x8 anews to report from that meeting.

2 Z4 n( S8 W; o/ k+ {- t6 F; aFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
3 c9 w9 M* @4 O6 t4 Lundergraduate international students from the increase to the 6 V7 q* R O9 ]& @
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international * h: q1 ]0 s5 f) S4 ^& ?9 x( e* ^
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
# d2 e' G3 i7 Vtuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). * B1 V( M2 d' q- @3 b
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
: Z* p" [0 X+ ithe differential for international graduate students.) J8 q4 x% {, y/ t+ m7 x% t
% z! T4 i# N3 Z! cNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an # { G/ D* M8 w0 F% O
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 2 o+ k5 G! r8 K
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students : D: U' H2 y2 R% r: o& ^
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
, Y* b. g5 i$ y) j) o' pleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in ' C1 p2 \ ], m
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected ! E0 e/ m5 j# }4 C4 L
increases once they are here.! X9 t( y! E- S% w4 K2 C5 ?
9 ~- E# ]4 ~# s! `: b, GThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
$ L+ y4 S8 d2 y0 ^- ]international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
( U5 F3 r* W3 @2 ]+ swould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
9 E2 y; C8 R+ Q hhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this ( k p; \* ?2 {, h E
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your {- G5 T- l8 y4 ^8 G1 O, s
