Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. & D8 z* Z* f0 e# j

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
, ?2 x1 v9 H5 w) M( U# lCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad : g$ i6 `9 B+ V" e3 b4 f. D' e
news to report from that meeting.4 Q$ {# H. Q E7 M2 a+ _
5 ?' o" ]* O$ O6 v$ DFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current 8 v) }1 ]5 X: J1 x
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
" E( Z; R2 c6 N+ i# |differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
6 H5 n8 y ~/ U& U- pstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
' l: O V; @- j/ n! [tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). ) t( h' B i6 [/ ^; |
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
# }; s# D; E8 z; P; mthe differential for international graduate students.
4 {5 B! \" h4 e6 o% s! m5 R2 R, L+ W) e3 ?7 Z
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
% g3 X% _+ U( G3 O& ^ E; Jincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to ) L& W ^0 W$ e
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
! V) {& o$ W* b. g; |will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
/ V( Q6 v: T% u' h& mleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in R8 J5 ^- F9 m, c1 n1 p/ f" K
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected - Q0 a& a( g4 {3 j( C$ z
increases once they are here.3 k" U/ G5 C+ Q$ B4 G' t# K
6 x7 t+ M2 d( v0 ~+ ~The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the ) L' g" D" [/ ?
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I : v. u" H# P1 S- e, [# `) D$ B
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that 0 l3 D# i/ @4 X, L9 u3 u Y) X6 g# I
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
" h; q: [$ t* u$ _increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your , _9 ]5 K( n2 i( z, b5 }9 A
