I; a0 [! M: p! G% q+ @" p+ Z4 o1 {Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 9 z8 x: L; z) G A
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
- E3 b: d0 m, anews to report from that meeting.3 g& h# k: B- J# t! N3 K' z( o
5 _; n; W8 P8 ^' C5 M( ~2 p
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
/ ^: b) j4 @- E1 A! w4 W# @undergraduate international students from the increase to the
$ U* S ~2 r6 w x% t, ~differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
$ u# y# {" W/ t5 Wstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
0 [: f( n! z* ~5 ytuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). ( U) T- Z$ _! D+ r# A) [
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
& G8 F' t l- a R3 Pthe differential for international graduate students.
% X1 }; I9 c# ]1 V3 Q
9 q7 U9 h. v% F: YNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
" x! d' F8 `# E# @; p7 {increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
! _! D% M! L4 [; M9 W3 k! o220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students ! z& {* ?. [4 Y6 h* w+ I7 `
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
/ S/ b; ], ?6 o! j) b! ?least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in * {! q( z; u9 W3 u1 y2 c( b0 V
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
! j( w n2 x3 S( _increases once they are here.

3 h- f3 I4 o$ e+ |5 |' Y2 BThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the ' }3 y7 Y) X1 u
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

# s' y" } R/ n0 U$ F1 I2 F3 ?have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this ' ]( j8 V) e. Y2 L+ n9 m
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your ) `) h) j: j6 m! a* M. ]$ r: k
