0 b3 \7 K" J2 V6 Q1 H+ ^) M" F# ?% SGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

: S# M: Q- i9 t  o5 mYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
4 K9 _" J2 s1 d) i% s" Y& n1 n: F9 {news to report from that meeting.
* U. q" T6 z: C# n
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
; }  X0 _3 G9 s" U& e( Yundergraduate international students from the increase to the
! Y4 y+ Z6 b) w: D0 y" C7 y3 }/ ydifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
; A& @  _$ @, w% e. E' o, H7 u" Xstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
the differential for international graduate students.

& y# h# U5 n- h# q6 }Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
7 C) j0 U8 Y# n/ k! a- `220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
* W) r  G3 q% ]9 Z6 Kleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
0 a: L" B& u& g7 F0 ^: Utuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
+ {: m, Q( `- F9 X6 kincreases once they are here.

4 n9 {: n$ p# Q! `" k7 kThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
: \3 a/ u: L6 w" ?5 E! vinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
% {4 x3 H) R6 \6 V* w7 ^2 s" Chave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
; ]4 C+ P  L& y: A6 c; G3 z2 tincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
help. Thank you.
