Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
4 R" S( J8 \4 H& s+ M4 J- ?! \news to report from that meeting." }5 ]7 W( L; }7 e
, Z, J# I& ~9 u5 |! U7 N- cFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
, _6 x; }3 c5 n2 @* Dundergraduate international students from the increase to the 8 f1 |# |) {4 F
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
! h2 t8 D9 p- Y# u6 w8 Vstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
) E2 |4 a/ A; G7 R! V- l- o3 |tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). - e' t; p& Z/ W6 C0 X
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
5 n& a) Y% a0 T+ @the differential for international graduate students.
: i" ~+ k- H4 e* e8 S% S' Q# z1 _0 I' p6 x
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
" F4 a7 u% v5 C3 dincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
& M2 l) q2 G- m' W# l [220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
: _/ Q- S- ^. Z$ xwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At : G6 S# {2 j3 O
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
2 U! ?, U; t! v" q/ I+ qtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
1 r( M6 f4 Z8 H uincreases once they are here., X( B9 t4 ?: R/ ?; P
8 a/ K/ h, |& A) t" ]% r0 WThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
( `1 X) U1 A2 ainternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I " O2 k) I6 `" F1 [
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that ! R* Q' |# ^! l. s" F
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
' Q% E) X' q* w; {increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your 3 P$ _$ q4 o# c% a8 h
