% o3 d0 n( F$ `( ~Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
" {5 ?4 W+ V- P2 L( n' V+ K8 q' y6 XCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
! ]3 u: s* a1 m/ D" m- q4 Gnews to report from that meeting., y! P p# h( a! n. e
; v$ Y' |& u2 q+ H
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current ' P5 X" Z9 f& E* F+ u r
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
% B# h6 G0 C& d i2 M7 r' |6 Y) s7 rdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international * U& z* h, s' m# V6 o: f& S" J5 ^
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base : L( b- g' t) i9 @2 l, r
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 1 j- T" I1 ?* }# D, D
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
6 l# X4 H+ E1 e, ?the differential for international graduate students., S3 U% K2 p: k7 O+ x. b: k( H
7 {, a/ r# p6 p: b8 `, I% gNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an t8 f( Z* O4 k# N) D, {4 r5 w
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
Q- k- q9 s3 l8 j! K- G2 Z- s5 o220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 3 S9 i7 U3 _+ D7 J6 G7 X: z$ o: ]8 i- e
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At % X0 k+ W" W3 `' M
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in , R. U \2 o' o; j
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected " K; [+ \' f5 w/ N. C, C1 f: ?
increases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
5 ]: z+ n. O' Pinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I 2 A) L5 A( a2 N1 v

% F9 ^% v0 G$ U5 t4 [have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
