Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties ; r% G0 ^* g6 Z j* |4 p
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 6 q5 @% }- L# e8 T$ X5 I
news to report from that meeting.

) S- g* V4 q8 z1 D& q: f4 s5 MFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
" C* y5 p) _7 y/ t. \. I$ _undergraduate international students from the increase to the 4 J9 f7 l; U; `5 I2 e8 r
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international ; S, w3 H& e3 v7 v& E$ ^9 O
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
+ A; n* m) q) G! Y( s% Jtuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 2 a1 T/ L- C) P- w
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase - _) Y9 Z1 U! I4 ^* @
the differential for international graduate students.
$ d+ i& G+ p# N) h0 X' W2 L: a3 }# r
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
' C8 K8 B. ~% j0 yincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to / |% w0 M u6 e$ f$ q
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students S ` w6 f+ W9 [. s
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At " |6 D: A9 `% }- ~ S: f3 N
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
7 A' `: a- r# Y; G- X# Wtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
2 e* t- _) u" Cincreases once they are here.7 c5 M, d! d% ?; Q6 n# I
- _* J W/ X/ u% Y! S& uThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
b( r! g5 r; e; X3 vinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I 8 ?0 k; ^+ X6 w6 F, d0 K: b
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that , ]. m; n' n. m& q' U- d, v4 L; h# ?
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
+ p/ U' Y2 @* G% M7 j5 jincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
