Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. # P& ?8 L+ D# \2 K U) s% G* `* J& l

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties % s* `8 |1 Y& u# G8 U; m6 ]
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 8 V/ L+ N$ K. A1 @) Y) T
news to report from that meeting.) q5 s2 C* X5 F. k( ^; n: H( `
* c( F7 R4 D9 G2 P8 ]0 `First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
- J6 X9 A% d8 u& G Hundergraduate international students from the increase to the
6 p& p/ o, u" I M2 ~6 S+ {differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
+ ?# l% V/ D( w7 Z, h9 d7 N5 astudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
, m4 l4 K% u6 W% {/ Z0 `& y4 wtuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). ; H$ ` m! h. H t: W
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
6 ]* [9 L8 v8 Q$ J* N+ q! k( wthe differential for international graduate students.
6 L( D3 p# g. H' D$ `! r: E0 Q3 ~2 ~' e
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
, D& |2 @0 I- h2 oincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to ) |) R1 K) w3 O
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students , l) y& `, d0 z: u4 l, B
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At , n) y& l1 }% y, P2 q7 T
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
% W, f1 Q" b" Q4 w4 e$ _& t% ntuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
% Y% p* ?6 u; j6 ~" `( b/ wincreases once they are here.
/ R8 n9 o$ I) ~( n6 q) {* I" @) k) R
The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
, v4 n& D6 M, s/ A: sinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I 9 H M- P' w; M$ d8 v8 p
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
4 e; g: p# c6 U4 |% ghave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
. h* f( b- ]% S4 N, d4 Y% \increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
