Two Choices

) h. I3 |3 e. M> there isn't one. Read it anyway. My question is: Would you have made the. ~- v# e5 p; e8 @

$ \( _( u  S) T1 B> At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning-disabled children,
6 Y/ h% t" z& F2 Q3 T. R> the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be0 r3 |1 v) |; o5 e6 U! Q$ p
> forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated& u6 J" o7 ^6 }+ G5 ]
> staff, he offered a question:2 s' [+ _$ _) e" v/ C* z/ z# K' d

8 H& g/ ]' y. B> 'When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does is
) j# _3 a- M' @! L1 m/ G> done with perfection. Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other% u5 v* V0 _$ c# |7 ?" j% U9 B
> children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the
6 I$ `  p5 F# z& w( B* G> natural order of things in my son?'+ P4 k9 l1 O" e7 V: e5 a* e* I

7 @. o1 F. G. w& h> The father continued. 'I believe that when a child like Shay, physically
5 D! i8 o6 j/ x> and mentally handicapped comes into the world, an opportunity to realize
/ H% s, ]9 V' x> true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people+ S8 j$ v% f# ~& _* _2 v
> treat that child.'

* G7 A- w! C& A5 n/ T5 e1 W> Then he told the following story:5 G: C4 @9 l  K' y

; S; y; ~; Z' `> Shay and his father had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were
9 T$ R1 \9 o8 O> playing baseball. Shay asked, 'Do you think they'll let me play?' Shay's
" d7 B& }  N3 ]  `' ]* k> father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their
. _3 j8 x% c2 F5 k" c> team, but the father also understood that if his son were allowed to play,
' R3 G) n  q: U" \) s> it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be
9 z3 v& F' f5 Z) ~> accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.

> Shay's father approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not2 a, o  D% B9 v* {9 A. I
> expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and* h: `$ t  Q& ~
> said, 'We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I
: F- v7 y6 e1 }5 G9 s1 \> guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth

, z. A8 @4 `* D9 S+ W" U, R> Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a
9 p+ B( F* y' W7 Q> team shirt. His Father watched with a small tear in his eye and warmth in
( ]$ Q8 C+ O( B. n) b4 V> his heart. The boys saw the father's joy at his son being accepted. In the
7 C! t0 b. G% V) I: K2 D> bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still5 P0 o: S' f0 T7 L8 p- Q% l
> behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and
" N$ m5 S% M' k% N' v> played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was
6 K8 V3 x6 J5 h' ^2 V5 B; [> obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from
. `: {" R+ |# A8 w# X" V) X, C> ear to ear as his father waved to him from the stands. In the bottom of the
5 j, k- i" M6 ^# f% O+ h> ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. Now, with two outs and the bases" |4 U- ~+ \6 M5 E8 n
> loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be
# j3 T6 g; V# L, C' A> next at bat.9 u; r. P# U$ V! c2 z/ g

+ `% v# @8 q5 V! P% K& ^> At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the+ Z) Q; p0 d6 g4 n5 n1 l) t
> game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat Everyone knew that a hit was all
+ W& J0 N0 M% a5 G& [$ ~+ X( w7 }> but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly,4 k! L" B( a) t' K6 _. ]
> much less connect with the ball.4 |7 ^. Y- i5 @2 C) x
> However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the
6 u- g" m" q( G> other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved+ G4 v( Y* n" n! L9 F* i) ?
> in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make
2 k# _9 ]7 ~* n: X> contact. The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The+ O  N8 G# O+ }2 w' l: ]& `
> pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay.
3 D( L" y) w( c+ G2 h% \$ V> As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball2 j( j: S7 i" B' @; [. C5 z! a
> right back to the pitcher.

" `. M: D( |) Y* F> The game would now be over. The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and
8 J5 R8 k) y# x# T: \> could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been
3 F9 Q, n8 V3 d! \> out and that would have been the end of the game.

& w# S3 d+ K" v  e: d( G5 r; |> Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out% E0 Q+ y3 m" ?; R3 s' A. u
> of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stands and both teams started; F5 N; ?, r1 \9 ^
> yelling, 'Shay, run to first! Run to first!' Never in his life had Shay ever* ]* b( I  s3 f2 s$ |: w9 z! x& o
> run that far, but he made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline,
/ P$ o) X0 \( Z- v* L- p> wide-eyed and startled.
  n3 d7 |; m0 q/ H+ i6 j>
! Q& ]6 _3 N/ O3 ?  c$ w- x- }) m> Everyone yelled, 'Run to second, run to second!' Catching his breath, Shay
2 K4 F5 e6 T  M9 s7 K/ H1 V4 o6 \> awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the* ~* P' B, n+ v9 N( v' P
> base. By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had3 h" s* b+ \7 k! j
> the ball ... The smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to
9 M1 @# f% k+ R7 w> be the hero for his team. He could have thrown the ball to the0 l& ^, b5 c* X; {8 y
> second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intention So he,5 ?+ b, V& S8 O8 V  b6 w
> too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's
3 n& w$ ]* x5 ]# {6 H0 v; }> head. Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him# _1 _6 M+ H" C2 E- e& \
> circled the bases toward home.1 O$ e( D) y, q; m" v
>5 H7 }$ R+ W, T
> All were screaming, 'Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay'
5 T: Y- A& X$ K/ O7 Q+ z>1 e' ]2 t  V: B" g
> Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by! ^6 N# @, W( V* x# n! q9 `9 \
> turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, 'Run to third!( u( K) s& U' ^2 z+ z+ g
> Shay, run to third!'
2 X" O9 h7 a7 V. }% X. X  F& B>
' M7 j* [& Y8 G! V) T3 _- t> As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on, I7 Z: P: v+ h% d4 A! K% N  G
> their feet screaming, 'Shay, run home! Run home!' Shay ran to home, stepped- U4 @6 Q; w1 O  l! s
> on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the
6 C+ G+ G6 ~+ F# u" c> game for his team.
) q2 y/ ?1 E1 c( d' k4 |4 q, t1 |( K>- Q. P& q: o! G, F
> 'That day', said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face,( x2 G; Y) V  U( z3 J2 ]8 d: P
> 'the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity
  k# h) G3 ]: o3 I3 k> into this world'.
) I' ^% E: S. @! m5 a8 t>
% u0 p! @% w: p- p> Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never: m6 D9 f" k" w
> forgotten being the hero and making his father so happy, and coming home and
  z, z- |4 \1 _8 O8 a! Y> seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!! ?5 Y+ W% Z/ f; H& \3 e8 U
>; q: U' F' f7 Y4 }# n" P5 k7 J# \
> AND NOW A LITTLE FOOTNOTE TO THIS STORY: We all send thousands of jokes7 ~+ \$ V9 j; j9 i* k* P; S( C
> through the e-mail without a second thought, but when it comes to sending
  @: D& l3 T$ a) s& {> messages about life choices, people hesitate. The crude, vulgar, and often7 x- B4 A# ~2 ^# x
> obscene pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion about decency
  ?& j3 O  i: T" p7 Y1 u> is too often suppressed in our schools and workplaces.
) I8 ^5 K5 {5 F, n" _: i- c>
" D& ~& C0 h+ _; |1 C$ W- k6 F> If you're thinking about forwarding this message, chances are that you're
7 p* k+ |) x$ ?! C> probably sorting out the people in your address book who aren't the, E( ?# X1 G, ~
> 'appropriate' ones to receive this type of message. Well, the person who# H* |  F) Q! |7 A. S- @
> sent you this believes that we all can make a difference. We all have
  u$ j1 N3 K, d0 ^0 G! H5 q: p> thousands of opportunities every single day to help realize the 'natural
+ h5 U/ w$ }3 F6 o8 z+ \+ B> order of things.' So many seemingly trivial interactions between two people
  L/ X8 n% Z. ^9 e2 _7 z  M> present us with a choice: Do we pass along a little spark of love and
/ j( H! V- }* l2 [* G& ?6 a/ [> humanity or do we pass up those opportunities and leave the world a little
( [# g: `3 G2 R0 N+ _' B> bit colder in the process?

' j! R( ^; {8 j! W& g5 e/ i4 p> A wise man once said every society is judged by1 _' u) I0 Z( I
> how it treats it's least fortunate amongst them.
) p$ _* P9 |& M3 m7 N5 Q; U! X>
9 `& n. o0 B3 y# a. l> You now have two choices:
7 x$ W) g3 |4 g> 1. Delete5 H! j! B# ?8 ?% I  X9 {
> 2. Forward
