EDMONTON - Prices for new homes in Edmonton fell 5.3 per cent in July compared to the same month last year, marking the biggest year-over-year drop in 23 years, said Statistics Canada today.

Calgary saw a 0.3 per cent slide compared to July of last year.

Even heated Saskatoon posted a slower annual increase of 13.1 per cent, "further confirmation of a trend of deceleration in this city. Many builders reported increased prices as a result of higher material and labour costs," the agency said.6 I* _( ?2 I4 B" u2 X' l& y$ d$ D$ C/ k9 ]
' Q' g6 ]# p! J3 fThe fastest pace was in Regina, which saw a year-over-year price increase of 29.6 per cent, down from its record rise of 34 per cent in April.

" `) @$ ^% @; c# rAs the market continued to cool in Western Canada, prices for new homes rose nationally at a slower pace in July for the sixth consecutive month.

Prices were up 2.7 per cent in July from a year earlier, down from June's annual pace of 3.5 per cent. On a monthly basis, prices edged up 0.1 per cent between June and July.! B6 o( K8 ?# }
