EDMONTON - Prices for new homes in Edmonton fell 5.3 per cent in July compared to the same month last year, marking the biggest year-over-year drop in 23 years, said Statistics Canada today.

Calgary saw a 0.3 per cent slide compared to July of last year.

; e1 B X7 n& ^: ?, H% LEven heated Saskatoon posted a slower annual increase of 13.1 per cent, "further confirmation of a trend of deceleration in this city. Many builders reported increased prices as a result of higher material and labour costs," the agency said.

The fastest pace was in Regina, which saw a year-over-year price increase of 29.6 per cent, down from its record rise of 34 per cent in April.4 w5 G: Z) |( h: F6 k5 `

As the market continued to cool in Western Canada, prices for new homes rose nationally at a slower pace in July for the sixth consecutive month.8 N" \( Y" G K7 \6 y. b5 ~

Prices were up 2.7 per cent in July from a year earlier, down from June's annual pace of 3.5 per cent. On a monthly basis, prices edged up 0.1 per cent between June and July.) h9 G! a& v8 ^$ u' h) Z* H

"The growth rate of the index has been on a downward trend since September 2006," the agency said.
