The Multicultural Health Brokers Co-operative supports immigrant/refugee individuals and families to attain optimum health through relevant health education, community development and advocacy support. The MCHB seeks a Research Consultant with strong organizational/reporting skills for a community based research project and environmental scan of under and unemployed immigrants in the Edmonton ethno-cultural communities of Edmonton.

8 V: K# i0 n c' x3 h/ KThe Project: The purpose of the research project is to explore, define and document the issue of unemployment and underemployment within ethno-cultural communities in Edmonton. Focus groups and other activities will be coordinated within six ethno-cultural groups to create an inventory of the skills and abilities of unemployed and underemployed immigrants and refugees including youth (aged 25-30) with a working ability in English language.

" e( U- S3 N Z' bTheir employability profiles will be compared to the categories most highly requested in temporary foreign worker applications. Community animation will be used and a database of employable local immigrant workers with their skills will be created and made available to key stakeholders. The project will run through to the end of July 2009.

Research Consultant: He/she will have a background in community based research, instrument design and development. S/he will demonstrate an understanding of current issues in the Alberta workforce and be familiar with key government services supporting employment/immigration. The Research Consultant will work independently and as part of a core team that includes the Project Coordinator, Database Consultant and project support staff.

Responsibilities: The research consultant will provide a final report synthesizing the findings from a community based research project gathering information on the barriers and solutions to employment for highly skilled and educated immigrants in the Edmonton area.

Project responsibilities/deliverables include: provide ongoing support and feedback to the Project Coordinator in the design and implementation of a community based research strategy; support ongoing review and design of a participatory research process that includes focus groups discussions and an on-line tool gathering detailed information from highly skilled and educated immigrants in the Edmonton area.) r/ y9 q4 Y8 h

PLUS: provide background research and support for the dBase Consultant to ensure that privacy legislation/practices are adhered to in the collection and storage of on-line participant personal data; conduct a review of relevant literature documenting barriers to employment for immigrants, employer and government strategies and recommendations for multi-sectoral change; data analysis of focus group discussions and on-line participant data; produce a detailed report synthesizing research findings and recommendations for action in line with the project goals. 2 v0 |- q4 g+ {' V!
