Lone driver killed in crash

A man died Thursday after his car sped off the road, slammed into a light pole and flipped into a tree.

The crash happened at the south exit of Whitemud Drive and 159th Street just before 5 p.m.

6 O/ T4 Z6 Z5 D r( h3 j7 IThe impact scattered chunks of the vehicle more than 15 metres and left it crumpled on the side of the road.; _ _, A: g: m E2 K" r) x5 ?
: w3 P. l- I9 {" f# L wEmergency workers cut the roof off the car and pulled the driver out. He was later pronounced dead at University Hospital.

Joanne Lineken was driving in front of the man just before the crash.

; u. r) v+ a+ m2 |& n$ Y- _"He was coming up so fast, it was incredible," said Lineken, visibly shaken hours after the incident.% R6 T8 I+ G% z8 ^0 |: X

"He came up and he kind of touched on my bumper and pushed me ahead. It's like he spun out of control, really quickly went off to the right, went through the light post and spun around and hit the tree."

2 Q4 @$ P* ~4 Q0 hOther witnesses told police the man had been speeding and weaving in and out of traffic erratically before he hit the off-ramp.4 }2 O& ]/ X6 g5 Y

Traffic Sgt. Bob Manz said it looks like the man was trying to pass Lineken.

"I think what happened was, he was trying to manoeuvre around, and at the speed he was travelling, he couldn't control the vehicle," Manz said.7 p" b; D0 {( f$ P; }
" Z- ~5 ?' y O1 v0 J \The man's death was the 10th traffic fatality in Edmonton this year.
