Edmonton's population grows by 30,000

EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.9 b3 i% w: L" m& q: _+ s0 B
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
6 z3 P/ d. Q% vThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected./ v; `* `/ N, C* [1 @
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.) y# a) V8 r4 H5 _, k4 X s+ A
"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
# Q- |" v9 Q" ]* l# j! xEdmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
+ I3 p6 Y! x# y) g NThis year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
