, \0 P3 n- Y( lEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.7 X- A3 T+ l/ z0 X8 I
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.4 j6 l: S b8 ?( x J
The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.1 I1 y6 s, e. w, e( H
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.8 b" J/ G9 o8 N7 n9 D6 S X! I
"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. 9 W- D$ r5 g: R+ c# T
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
