Edmonton's population grows by 30,000! w0 h" ?1 ~. ^1 ?1 f/ u2 l, [3 z

EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.
" X( a' V6 ~3 P/ i( d"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
* ], p* y; ?8 X0 FThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.

"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
5 Z0 j6 l& D; z7 I0 MEdmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
4 ?+ Q& T% R$ r( z- B+ |$ qThis year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
