. A7 {: ?% K1 @9 h0 v. i* w The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
$ w! h% i( g- S" W3 |5 C$ Yto their first ministry, to reopen a church 1 [; f7 S8 _5 z* H2 |5 l
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October 6 H- O4 e* E6 J; p1 } q$ l$ |
excited about their opportunities. When they saw 5 J( L' ^& P( e9 v( l
their church, it was very run down and needed
0 z8 o; _4 i6 H9 d; @5 x3 r8 d! ~much work. They set a goal to have everything
6 x0 R2 ], I* k/ \4 @4 A* Odone in time to have their first service
4 X1 ?- c5 v* ?on Christmas Eve.
4 a, e4 h8 T6 d0 |6 H2 S* }7 bT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
) m% ^3 z( d0 B, Upainting, etc, and on December 18
, i; n" q7 G2 V, P6 O4 gwere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
" r6 Y, E" U4 K+ u2 w: z. CO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
) ^7 G+ F* a; V6 e9 o: f& Trainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
! v4 s4 F9 m# I, X$ E O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.' I$ q4 }, Z. x2 [3 A' ? T @+ i
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had3 T* m4 n1 I) x' d
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
$ D1 }9 m0 f; r20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 3 P) n9 [& `$ K3 l, |
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
2 s# ^9 W6 r" A& h: _- ybeginning about head high.
& H Z" M/ X& r. DT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
+ _( I; g1 G! O$ K) vand not knowing what else to do but postpone
6 w$ q$ _1 l2 i7 C; g. l0 cthe Christmas Eve service, headed home. 6 G! n# f( |) q5 p
On the way he noticed that a local business was
2 u$ W3 R. F0 d9 O/ C/ u* B4 E8 t |having a flea market type sale for charity, so he 4 ~. }7 }9 q6 ]' `* Y- l. B* G
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, - Z- U. v3 A) p P' Y$ a' v& i7 {
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
$ D5 W3 p# h) a7 [' g6 j5 mwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 1 w, Z, C4 g6 o" m& ?! D* L
embroidered right in the center. It was just $ s- r0 S( ^# U1 O& V _
& o, F. @: Y$ q& _+ r
% T; ]' M8 k+ E( x4 X4 S6 G ( M# }& R: C; ^& B# B! J
- b+ ], h3 Y5 {+ V6 L
& e7 Y I/ ?( S; H3 a2 ]/ q; N* T; ]5 h" i; B! P- n7 U1 h
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
5 Y: `/ x1 c) c( h8 ^/ u8 lB y this time it had started to snow. An older * m$ z: i3 f* _5 c2 I
woman running from the opposite direction was 0 T8 e: L" ?. ^4 J" r- X
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor ! Y7 D9 a# [1 }. a" ?" ^
invited her to wait in the warm church for
3 o9 R$ c. g/ B# @9 f( j. Kthe next bus 45 minutes later.
+ O& d* W- l0 v' e
* w& q2 l7 g @6 t$ B. n) hShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor # r& p7 I4 D* ]6 ?1 @, _
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put / W6 c9 K t5 u- U5 Q$ d4 y
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor - ^) U" j* c1 ~& Z$ T# a" g
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. Z/ b" C# k+ M! H9 W/ T
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center, v8 p; s- I/ n1 w
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
) f$ U2 A! D# O/ mshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
- X$ b1 i; Z" ^' R1 K1 gThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
0 N6 L8 r$ e8 Y& T3 O" v; Dthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into+ ~. I, v- ]5 Z9 \8 d
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had ! g2 J& R M0 h
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
( Q/ A4 E- v& _& h2 qT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor ( i" l W' G8 j- H$ c. O
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
, C4 a- o. }" z7 J* ^woman explained that before the war she and
' v% g: F5 i' q0 z; Pher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . 3 u; {) ^& Y, p# P
/ w9 a s) }& \When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. $ a; C) V8 K* u: o! c! E
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
5 ?! v0 l' Z B: k6 D9 q8 M8 d" \He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
" D# N& A& E7 }9 t# Mhusband or her home again.
- I1 T3 f# `7 j0 [7 |T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
% T$ `8 c+ ^* [- ?) Qbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.4 [0 s* b- l4 [. F; m9 `$ _
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That, e: Y/ s) R0 [# J4 T
was the least he could do. She lived on the other/ a. X0 [ ^2 [+ w$ T6 v
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn * @. \) m5 r0 c* u
for the day for a housecleaning job.4 f6 u& G- u+ [" y
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
0 c2 k% R1 \+ e/ j+ IEve. The church was almost full. The music and the 6 S3 V- T }' c; H' @
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
( w7 j" t4 h! apastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 8 ?! [* @% T: \; a. @* R
and many said that they would return.. 8 R0 g9 Y) \9 ?2 \9 p
One older man, whom the pastor recognized - z O6 ]$ p4 R! w' p) ~" z
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
7 W K/ t) C# C. C0 npews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 6 w- t' D( r% Z6 F
wasn't leaving.
$ G% f4 ]2 V3 p; c2 p$ K: AThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
! y) P( }# h9 O) J8 u% x" j2 tthe front wall because it was identical to one " ?" j- e6 m1 S- v& `, Y& t/ \
that his wife had made years ago when
6 ?9 o5 V5 B+ ythey lived in Austria before the war and how
. ~8 {% t, M) X8 z# k* dcould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
4 _) o9 Q4 i# S, aH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 9 h! ?- {0 b, }" G% b. A
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was / G+ e8 u2 G, s6 `* Q3 `
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and" ?) ~, ]: U4 ~3 p+ N k! j* D
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
9 Y% R8 c' S3 ]5 Vagain all the 35 years between. ; W( A4 e* [# v% p
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to # w* z' v F7 h: f; S5 ]( b( E; W
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten ; L% X X& V) }. k! p
Island and to the same house where the pastor 7 r! O }1 J4 C/ d+ X. _' }
had taken the woman three days earlier. 6 @& U+ u6 j8 ~1 y
He helped the man climb the three flights of
/ k% h$ D3 Y; Z: j4 Kstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
$ g" P/ Q& ^. P2 ?% P% g! Fthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
% m1 Z4 A! O+ {6 K0 Lreunion he could ever imagine.

cares we know He will see us through.
