Here are some guidelines from Parks Canada on what to do if you encounter a bear:
7 f( u: H1 G7 k; |* N
0 H1 x7 s1 n; |& r4 x-- Bears do not like surprises. Try to avoid such encounters by being alert and making noise.
- b$ V& K/ O6 c0 ]8 `
4 _7 ?/ z9 K& b6 q3 E2 X-- Stay calm. Most bears don't want to attack you; they usually want to avoid you and ensure you're not a threat.4 _7 i# n; b6 `9 f5 U( B, X
: o- Q" G9 P3 Q" _: T
-- Immediately pick up small children and stay in a group.1 x- R, B/ _ \2 t2 }
1 x2 V7 D/ P" }$ R-- Back away slowly, never run. Bears can run as fast as a racehorse, both uphill and downhill.
* Z. Q& f* p& m. f( |
* w6 }$ U6 L; C" L( I-- Talk calmly and firmly. If a bear rears on its hind legs and waves its nose about, it is trying to identify you. Remain still and talk calmly so it knows you are a human and not a prey animal. A scream or sudden movement may trigger an attack.
& x7 c9 y2 n, e9 Q7 i( @# S; N4 A6 d! {2 E8 h- |9 ]: Q7 o
-- Bears may bluff their way out of an encounter by charging and then turning away at the last second. Bears may also react defensively by woofing, growling, snapping their jaws, and laying their ears back.4 g# d: U& s" M: T0 q
3 b% y: }8 p$ t
-- Remain still until the bear leaves the area. These attacks seldom last more than a few minutes.
/ I j# F! R! X# g
. k X( e6 E' t) F+ S' j1 m9 A; V4 i-- While fighting back usually increases the intensity of an attack, in some cases it has caused the bear to leave. If the attack continues for more than several minutes, consider fighting back.
( w6 u! v( m; V+ B
# D) z1 y7 u& {# h-- If you have bear spray, use it. If contact has occurred or is imminent, play dead. Protect your face, the back of your head and neck with your arms.& E* O4 d1 H; N: a' U/ r+ [
. B9 E3 p$ q6 }+ P0 h: T. k/ M8 a-- Don't drop your pack. It can provide protection.
" C' R/ V; {! h' A+ o
5 `" u$ k. V* Q! h4 W-- Afterwards, leave the area or take a detour. If this is impossible, wait until the bear moves away. Always leave the bear an escape route. |
