Jim Wachowich of the Consumers Coalition of Alberta says the province's plan to deregulate retail power - which was originally supposed to be completed next year - could impact almost every household.

While natural gas has doubled in price this year, Wachowich said electricity has - if only momentarily - seen spikes of up to 2000%. He said that happens because electricity can't be stored and is always susceptible to price fluctuations.

If the province doesn't carefully manage that shift, power bills in every corner of the province could see huge swings, Wachowich warns.
