21. Looking at his watch, he saw that it was one o'clock, but the bell struck thirteen times before it stopped.

22. Armed with a torch, the vicar went up into the clock tower to see what was going on.

. `& [# v* \( r' x: c23. In the torchlight, he caught sight of a figure whom he immediately recognized as Bill Wilkins, our local grocer.

24. 'Whatever are you doing up here Bill?' asked the vicar in surprise.! z' `. n3 c$ @. a

25. 'I'm trying to repair the bell,' answered Bill.

27. You see, I was hoping to give you a surprise.

31. That's the trouble, vicar,' answered Bill.' \' W/ K! Z: N8 y  C0 d

! d" L  U+ w# W% A; u/ S9 `6 i* m) R32. It's working all right, but I'm afraid that at one o'clock it will strike thirteen times and there's nothing I can do about it.6 U# O/ m6 ~: o/ E/ W% E, r# x3 c$ f

33. We'll get used to that, Bill,' said the vicar.3 W" E$ K9 [9 i1 L

+ x" P$ B5 D; a- ?4 n34. Thirteen is not as good as one, but it's better than nothing.) U- t6 O4 `5 S7 y- J& N
        “13下是不如1下好,但总比1下也不敲强。
! e# _2 f6 V! _' t' s8 i35. Now let's go downstairs and have a cup of tea.
( ]4 d, P5 Z& K" B" s        来,咱们下楼去喝杯茶吧。”
