The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition2 G; r5 p# J) j% {
Roles and Functions
2 {0 M) u7 P1 a1 t" [6 b- tThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the2 M. C# Y8 v; T* H9 S) B
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the
4 \; W( B2 ~5 [/ y2 qoperations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
# g2 r# s3 E+ N4 s3 tthe important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,7 h( K+ j8 [2 P) c
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular U4 ~0 o. P6 Z5 R
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
. t6 t- P. n1 x/ H' nconducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an% K6 L: F: w8 D3 _- a2 P: \2 B
employee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
+ \4 V7 l) k9 R8 Wstaff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend
8 T2 J; t! Z8 ~# A! mall board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.3 k, R+ _) J$ ~+ ~
3 i! N. B' [8 X, CFunctions and responsibilities:
: E7 E: c, Y( K6 s; RThe specific functions of the coordinator include the following:. C4 e: j% o; q ~( a
1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the
2 D: ~8 m5 _, k. P3 Q9 B1 tofficers of the Coalition# A* b, u( R# w7 y2 a( S0 J; u
2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
) t+ x' l3 l) yorganizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
9 }# E( M" z6 d2 E3 gand public institutions
* B" i6 ?4 {! }7 o3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through
' G; S3 a( }! g$ ufunding opportunities and maintaining initiatives h+ E3 N+ J& ]0 ]2 w% H. u
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community
, I" {, H- u8 I# c& ~# worganizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with
( [1 K$ X r9 @ y T4 K$ Y. @these organizations
$ e/ s4 M# r' A5 H5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community4 V. Z% P/ x0 v4 h) d6 F ]! Q
leaders! z6 c2 G5 `0 E. x7 g
6. Advances the community animation process as a bridging strategy for civic
& V# e+ h& Q; B+ v- i4 J, V6 \participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society
6 G: C: ]" i \! N/ j( ^7. Offer opportunities for service providers to learn and experience working% A1 s( V2 @7 _7 X- ?3 v7 D
with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically+ [6 y8 j2 S- t* O2 I! ~7 q
diverse backgrounds

3 O& h# N3 k! g$ m6 z7 aAdministrative responsibilities:- D; M$ \8 f' X/ u/ b' E
1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its7 \3 n" n1 m4 f0 K) G3 F5 E
regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of8 e6 L1 k5 [8 J6 q/ [, K
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
2 [' M0 A; j* o7 T }: [9 C4 H3 k) w% [members of the Coalition’s financial condition.
* C' z; X) ^3 Z8 X k2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the
, M8 a. E! S2 k: vMulticultural Coalition/ d/ F! I1 G Z; ?/ r: i) @2 ^
Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board+ T2 \9 x. v7 J5 @0 S
All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
2 `' l& l# ~' _/ k* ~, E/ |" m6 \9 Timplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
9 o9 c: J3 p7 x, h- v. g" o8 loperations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.7 p& R1 N& D5 g0 ]. ~
The Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and
- j' J" _9 W4 iaims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should* L# }/ ?$ v7 v/ ?. w( ]1 S% M
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
0 r8 ^6 a: b3 Y. A& n( hparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and. c1 Q/ E% c9 ]1 W/ o+ |' K
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of
6 S0 }& {" K; b9 L g# \directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
7 B- g. H+ B: W- ^% \8 Xstatement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all- M" ]% u6 A% R: j
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of2 p* w* S0 L: w; K ?2 h' f+ A
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of

2. Leadership and critical thinking skills to bridge the needs and struggles

of funders, policy-makers, agencies and other decision makers
_% C' H W* u2 W% `, h! a3. Experience in writing grant proposals and accessing funding

4. Experience in administrative work with a proven ability to multi-task and

7. Community based research skills is an asset

This is a 9-month contract starting April 11, 2011 to December 31, 2011, with
