you should always remove the old top layer for a number of reasons. $ Y$ r( f, S$ M' G
1, it is possible to grow mould underneath the new top layer if you don't remove the old top layer+ u c( N0 i( S# u$ ^) y2 P% V# L3 q& K, d
2, it's very difficult to lay it evenly flat all across i7 {4 x: b1 g6 n
3, it's very hard to anchor it down with the baseboards, etc/ q( B- C' v1 v, s0 t
# d2 j% a+ W8 p4 k$ Fthe old under layer can be removed or you can leave it in depanding on its condition. if you want to remove it, it's a lot of physical labour work.

1 ^* S& C0 n0 D& a6 }' g) ginstalling the new carpet is very easy, but again it's a lot of physical labour. carpets are a lot heavier than most people think. plus, you'll need to do your own measurements, cutting, transportation of new/old material, etc.

ultimately, you have to decide if you want a professional look and feel or some quick and dirty fix. mix and matching small patches of carpet can be an eye sore in a long run. |
