Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression1 j' G/ R6 a& H, G
of the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is
0 U; u, \( i+ v+ ^- f9 P+ anow inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3% {7 w2 _! j3 Y8 C% h0 t
megapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution& e; G" [, H1 H/ O/ ~$ J% q l" z
within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color( V4 l6 B x3 C# s0 Q v9 r
matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance% R4 R. p4 {% F! `. h/ k9 Y; ~. U- X
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800
5 `* d$ `2 z, R ?. X( x0 nallows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject
3 a# g9 i6 K6 y* q: nwithout having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography
5 R* L* m2 @7 y0 T9 cwas traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum" E7 K: U5 z0 P- p4 B0 _
image quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was$ p1 ^# u4 l/ ~, z9 }: W8 a
widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and* [) p: v) N& A+ _3 q
convenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown
. N) M0 B. o! o; Q! T% ~before, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,3 L2 H+ E: F# Z8 z2 q( p+ G
thanks to the D800.0 N6 y+ d+ j. H* q3 }
When I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,
/ o# p% x* ?4 ~2 {" P+ O4 B: b36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic7 V7 P% t- I1 V! D/ X* {
range, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces
4 w5 p! }: {7 W2 X' wthe look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a! _' U7 @% a& R3 [! F
D-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as" f1 p* o( ~6 N0 ]2 ^+ [4 W" `8 C
well as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.
+ {" N9 i8 x; G0 {0 X4 XAutofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor
; Y, q# i3 a0 k# q/ B3 mhas noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is7 D- v: U Q6 d3 \) K0 o* B% G, R
easier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while+ Z# ^9 {" ]8 `7 D' ]) J
also feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New& Z3 j% r7 ^# l2 K8 V
cameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features
8 A- w( P9 N* B1 S$ C. D7 ein such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality( C( ]6 X& ` Z6 R9 G; M; I2 h

To me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is( S. ^# o( `( m4 d: V+ z
not megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models% g( {, X; S8 }
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using
& h+ _, p0 d* d; G# ~countless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first
0 C- J3 N q4 Gsight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws4 |9 U6 t: z0 ?1 X! X2 D% f: f! |
like never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of
* d5 o8 C5 o9 J5 V! P9 h: a; o8 Vacuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I: x% E8 v: K! b. j1 {! f/ p
am enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as
z* D/ w; I+ Q; dthough they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse$ b4 k- D3 P: X& T! n
photography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add
! \' P0 q! I8 L5 c9 Gtremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the/ g) M/ l6 R* O- R0 @2 L
D800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express

As a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,

architectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they

clean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility0 M k- `4 v) K
to work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional
