Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression6 A1 B8 X( O9 ]: y1 c# I
of the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is
' p# I/ L/ C# |0 J& C$ mnow inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3
# t \( \5 y$ i& [0 umegapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution
" ?2 ~, a+ `4 i6 J8 b' _within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color- ~' V% S; B- u, e
matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance( ?/ L3 e+ t7 P% _$ w
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800- c# D& @) w1 d' |( _6 x
allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject) m) B8 u0 k m, g
without having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography
. a3 A! E& n5 b# e* {; Qwas traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum3 D$ |1 X d) T/ B5 q$ x/ |; ]
image quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was# m2 f. |! M! P( B
widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and$ d% |, D. U. a1 O
convenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown: E* n+ U1 w$ H9 Y* e1 z1 e
before, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,
& j/ D8 ?. t( v1 \4 Z$ hthanks to the D800. s, M, W5 e/ u) w7 E# s4 K; S7 g
When I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location, L3 X6 s+ I8 Z' Z6 ^) ?& A1 M
36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic- }$ @) G/ Z! X: e" m0 O
range, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces
" C/ s/ j2 l. y* d) Z* Ithe look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a
5 }$ c% I: u; AD-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as
" Q, h$ a' j# e. p q$ [" d. U* B/ Gwell as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.5 E2 f5 ?3 q8 E9 h$ R' P
Autofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor" b1 s7 ?( |! T
has noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is( Y! x, q" c1 ]5 O. a {* M) Z
easier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while8 U$ i7 i. U. n- K8 E
also feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New7 f! C0 p# f) ~; {2 g% X
cameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features% I; d! m/ [( t* R1 y4 b
in such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality* }% j# Q. x2 N. b* d0 m4 w
prints and video.
' k6 c8 e; G' y7 f5 K/ HTo me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is3 U) k. E) B2 ^; v
not megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models
" Q/ @: t7 ?7 k' S2 i* oare important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using8 M" I1 d2 J; @- E v$ j4 N
countless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first- h4 X. }1 u% A+ c" n1 ~
sight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws
! H5 w' J6 N0 I5 Tlike never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of
8 M* H: k& F( n4 ` b1 kacuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I: Y: {# _- C, _4 `2 c) A& z
am enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as
4 T9 a. g" B9 Mthough they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse
8 Q8 H% l: {- e' Jphotography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add
+ A7 Y' l R" X5 H. Z+ [( Ftremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the& t8 R6 U& ?& L- O* ^* F
D800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express4 @- J" N3 K7 O' f
is that now I will think differently about the images I make.

quality lenses such as the PC NIKKOR tilt & shift lineup are indispensable for
; L3 ~7 i8 E1 {4 J& Qarchitectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they

% h1 Z& J) Q# d& V7 G0 G7 Eclean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility# c( \9 A9 h8 Q- V2 j
to work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional
