Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression- V) f0 R" d1 G$ l0 {; n: h+ g
of the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is
. g6 V2 k0 N5 k7 w) _2 |now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3
$ x9 J& K( T# Q" ]+ u. Rmegapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution# s. y# y' L6 ~( H( F
within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color
$ _& @3 P& g V T# m( rmatrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance& W, W" C+ `% j, W" W& z
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D8000 m# f* }! W9 G+ t
allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject- b9 d0 O; l1 h; i. g( M! ~# r" Y
without having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography
G3 M& G* \' G$ \/ x, L& R: F7 A) nwas traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum
w+ u( Z: D, i6 f# Uimage quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was
p0 X3 q! R) Z; C% r9 v* u, `widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and4 L! K: a& U: P/ a! _5 G! R8 I
convenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown
) n {, M1 N8 J! y) w0 t0 X3 Q* ebefore, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,
B$ N$ H- u, L; cthanks to the D800.
9 {+ W0 [: P4 x+ f# KWhen I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,
4 _- t: H& h. J9 Y; I% h36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic
$ v& B, N3 x* A9 ^range, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces
$ \9 r7 F) P3 v% X/ [the look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a
; H/ x0 V# A& P) I. ID-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as
- g" I( ]! N0 a+ {. @well as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.
9 @5 ~% A* O0 C( ~. U/ _3 n3 h; b6 ~Autofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor
a( ]7 c! U ]0 G3 Zhas noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is9 ]( ~3 V& |5 U/ z9 ^
easier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while
# h1 w- s8 ^) G' V4 ?$ U* L" Xalso feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New& d3 M; Y/ Z+ ?
cameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features# x3 h8 C" e' R- ^2 s
in such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality. u% k( w5 }; H8 `) ^6 P
prints and video.2 ]6 P" h- M' p
To me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is/ G! f5 N1 K6 R" b: `; z. ?
not megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models3 P7 g: V3 f& D1 E3 r
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using
o" U( y8 j0 m0 c. E* S2 U, |, ecountless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first
N/ J% H6 F+ c7 G% x& Isight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws
6 S P1 [3 G8 ?+ d" A' N {like never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of/ s: R9 p; w+ F [' U* |, O
acuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I
9 E9 H: w) Y" e9 q, A) k) z8 k5 T) Zam enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as' U W+ X- o& a2 T) J
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse1 ^5 Z3 }* Q/ \% t- a5 u& o
photography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add4 r9 ^2 ?: C& _' ]+ r
tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the
/ P- O5 v7 L7 G J, A* WD800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express
) H6 E( t4 C- e3 ?is that now I will think differently about the images I make.
+ U3 ?& e0 y& g! b3 ?As a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,
/ L. C4 ^' R4 I5 B! Rcompact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal
4 K; \$ U3 [7 ]! G# c' z( Y, G; X) Fartistic and client expectations. The Nikon D800 will set new standards for
1 A, i, V3 B; Q3 l* k) `3 dthe high-end 35mm D-SLR market. I have never worked with a 35mm digital
9 u1 J6 L2 T! tcamera that produces images with such exceptional quality and detail till; Y7 z! r0 X0 l: g
now. Particularly, the live view mode enables extremely precise compositions5 q2 A m5 {) j! }% N+ C# U$ T
and easy focusing in dim lighting, which simplifies my workflow. Superior5 i; g+ m6 P m/ D$ @
quality lenses such as the PC NIKKOR tilt & shift lineup are indispensable for# z! p. t0 Z' B' g; A
architectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they
3 z$ K5 a4 ]) {# ]7 ]3 nperfectly match with the newly invented system and produce breathtakingly0 w! j0 i6 }$ F0 q# D. z7 i
clean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility
8 M5 G, y, ]! A$ _7 W* F& [. d1 jto work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional" K& J5 H6 P! c* K8 w8 j
range of light. It definitely takes my photographic versatility and image quality
