of the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is+ ~4 t% T" w7 I! P9 o+ d
now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3$ {6 M s. s- g6 n
megapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution( T4 W1 s, A7 Y) t4 g% [1 }
within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color1 t: B' j- \) {7 n0 m' z4 ^6 ?
matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance
; ] L! }* A2 I7 }+ w! e$ _5 s' x: \in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800
( X% [8 W$ n3 Sallows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject
" U" @1 ]7 h! A. Ywithout having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography
X# |$ g7 [. pwas traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum
' N* C% k, h% |; B# u5 Himage quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was
- M- X% s# S' Wwidely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and) J+ O# m. ^& X$ \
convenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown4 p2 O$ H+ i' D* }" w
before, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,
- ^4 v" n& G! Z* B3 ?( p0 Athanks to the D800.# W* A: E: q1 ]7 f$ N
When I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,
4 i; A. u* j. ~8 G0 N$ ^36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic* d, T( g/ U B
range, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces! {% _/ @* u& Y0 z9 s' ]
the look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a
6 D& Q1 }9 J& N, L. g6 @6 p. MD-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as
& y4 P6 j5 d+ t' j& uwell as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.
& U4 j: B: Y, ~) O MAutofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor2 y2 k/ l; B/ e {2 i7 b7 Z
has noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is
' e. L' B4 O, a. ]) L: ceasier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while: q" h$ n9 v+ g) N: I3 M
also feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New' z- e1 o: t# r P# c
cameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features8 e$ c6 W3 I8 j6 O2 h1 k! S: H
in such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality4 o" X! M! a$ `2 i2 W
prints and video.: v1 a" q7 K) a, ]0 T! N3 h8 b3 f
To me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is* G5 e& p8 l+ ~' ?: X
not megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models0 H v0 K, p8 c$ |1 v8 M" `
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using
! X/ w9 s# E2 t: Qcountless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first
7 D( e/ \( q' t$ h; Zsight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws
5 ] a, v" z( E! q% mlike never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of
3 {5 P9 W$ R: ~! {7 `acuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I
5 c; }0 ~+ i3 `, b+ ~( o; N# I) ram enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as7 D8 P' o1 G3 w
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse2 a( Z1 t" T$ O7 I
photography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add3 X( O' N v& ^) E
tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the. M7 Q* ~$ _ ~: f/ W$ p
D800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express5 D" m% h& O. J
is that now I will think differently about the images I make.$ a; l1 l& ?' e# I% B6 x* H) z: O
As a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,
2 m3 ~) e; y, r7 f0 s: _$ @ [compact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal
) g+ z! z: W4 Partistic and client expectations. The Nikon D800 will set new standards for0 u" y' Q! f" R4 |- q# [
the high-end 35mm D-SLR market. I have never worked with a 35mm digital
- M+ Q3 f( r% H0 O9 K( Vcamera that produces images with such exceptional quality and detail till' Z( g5 N) R; r b+ h! o" |
now. Particularly, the live view mode enables extremely precise compositions/ f0 f9 O: U0 ]# B& Q+ ~
and easy focusing in dim lighting, which simplifies my workflow. Superior
* H, ?" F5 g# q8 Lquality lenses such as the PC NIKKOR tilt & shift lineup are indispensable for' c. p" w5 B4 m1 V+ I% {( A
architectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they, g1 R( b( ?) G |6 ]
perfectly match with the newly invented system and produce breathtakingly1 s3 x) k/ E* m
clean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility: s2 }" w5 h, T- s' I
to work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional8 t1 i+ l8 @7 \9 Y
range of light. It definitely takes my photographic versatility and image quality
