Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression
7 W1 s/ U$ Z$ j7 w# W" Mof the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is
) B% U( T- x$ D; ~ q( s7 Znow inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.35 d( o% B, h# n8 }/ d" v
megapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution \" M: a9 n3 P ?8 S# @; N
within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color
: K+ k6 b: r- A8 Imatrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance
2 x2 `/ h% H7 c8 K0 U9 {in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D8008 U5 e4 h" O+ @' c$ M9 g
allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject
* x- B4 }% w' a- Hwithout having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography
2 ~4 n& g9 _$ S: S3 h' `+ P1 Wwas traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum/ X% X7 D; v% \/ o: n% r
image quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was
' u( s t3 _2 ~widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and
6 V9 n9 S, U5 H1 C2 h O; Q4 y) Lconvenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown/ }8 c3 T. H6 z1 O9 t% H, C
before, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,

# l0 r( c2 b/ u- ~- x2 r7 q" LWhen I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,
3 F) \- v3 |9 G. |36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic
3 @9 |/ G/ O; |/ n6 q2 Grange, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces* t' R1 B( @; w3 b: d4 j
the look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a
) U# I1 H! j) D. p7 _& \: uD-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as# [7 y3 e4 _3 E0 R( }; n" e- c
well as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.
5 q1 J( v" F6 _: b* _; Z9 TAutofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor
3 E) t1 g6 U* P( v+ h3 _0 i* Rhas noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is
9 v8 u2 A! E9 }) M( s! weasier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while0 V4 Q4 g5 p5 f; ^4 R
also feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New5 r o$ } A5 ]
cameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features
9 g- F9 d7 @! J7 t+ O* }! zin such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality
0 y* W: j+ j F2 c# _& r5 lprints and video.7 y" U, a- E. F% k* s- u
To me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is
+ N' q' s- \4 f2 |not megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models& u' J5 H3 F9 d. |& n
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using
0 P" Z' f. u( K9 D1 U4 j$ `countless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first7 N- d0 N) v* F7 Y6 E
sight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws
. r( l" Z% d( Z/ jlike never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of
! v3 S. q- x9 b- f+ k4 e( sacuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I3 f9 n( b1 e) u4 y+ ^% Z3 T0 X
am enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as- ~/ p, q2 X- F8 |: {* D8 C2 d/ A
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse
. q j% v9 J4 R/ e( C1 Cphotography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add: W1 T* A6 R3 c
tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the: B) I+ t. C# B: S3 K6 k& V
D800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express' A) y5 \" ^9 B, e! W
is that now I will think differently about the images I make.+ y; N6 \+ ^7 |0 U/ U
As a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,
' R. b3 B1 x# rcompact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal

the high-end 35mm D-SLR market. I have never worked with a 35mm digital

now. Particularly, the live view mode enables extremely precise compositions
! E6 T" B" i+ i! e" I' c, |3 h7 Aand easy focusing in dim lighting, which simplifies my workflow. Superior
4 E$ i" ?& d% T6 N/ oquality lenses such as the PC NIKKOR tilt & shift lineup are indispensable for; G- z9 e' ]! t7 a7 G( n! u1 ?
architectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they

. b1 Y9 ?0 `8 x) i" lclean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility* K" f+ c! t- K, A- q7 H
to work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional& y' B, G r' m/ D6 r
range of light. It definitely takes my photographic versatility and image quality: O3 w0 V1 d' L+ s0 ]& f* t0 V
