Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression3 k2 k( i+ e' h
of the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is: G \% v5 L8 m, B* M; s0 ?( ^- G
now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3" U, D' K7 M$ p! f0 ?+ F G1 I
megapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution; B. p. n$ A+ f# ~7 y0 z, j8 g+ y5 {
within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color
8 R2 K. o4 ]% T5 _, o" nmatrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance% A- j r& Z( Z; ^
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D8008 O3 I- @5 _: R% m7 q
allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject
8 o4 q8 G4 t! c( Z% ?without having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography
5 ]) W% U/ p9 n2 fwas traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum
6 X" X# Q' Z7 R' B/ z; q/ X8 Yimage quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was; k) O8 Z) Y) e# P5 x8 ^
widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and
% t' \8 \" ?/ j$ ~% s: ?convenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown( t; y+ E: ~. ^& u( k
before, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,* H& B. R; k: S( a

When I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,
1 W4 F5 }' x, `! B/ `0 k8 S% g, m% A& b36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic
7 U: z8 x) X$ z, N K( _* d4 j/ vrange, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces1 m; `( I. W- r" ]
the look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a
u6 H; k9 _ u/ }* Z# S+ A3 R( ?D-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as9 L" i, d0 M. |, Y
well as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.
9 Y' p- D/ O' J# X! TAutofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor
" S( B% X8 x8 V0 R* z8 |- jhas noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is. E# X2 s* }, a
easier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while" w/ }! r8 v; C9 J
also feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New
7 i2 R% O+ L C( |0 t6 n5 |, V ucameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features: z6 g) `8 Y. \
in such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality
# q' l& r; H1 d1 F0 ?, v& tprints and video.
; U6 ~1 [8 z. E! W0 S& C& b! X) f! `To me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is- s& @2 i! {' z4 f* s, p
not megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models
' G# Q8 F N2 ]3 r. O' `8 C Vare important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using
" M: i: d" T9 p8 Ecountless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first
: O3 J: o6 ]2 r- ?4 c& O! Vsight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws
2 k) i* _; [5 X. `like never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of
/ P4 u+ I4 T- L: p4 @( c; _acuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I |, M. d. s3 ^! R0 d
am enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as
$ x$ E7 t+ P8 L1 ithough they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse
( [9 c% q" s8 b* D+ J6 h) Y- Y4 I+ q' Rphotography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add
0 {: C3 }9 n3 A7 V# v# Stremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the
2 V# V+ v8 W, @0 v. t4 bD800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express
# q% v4 S j* v" Yis that now I will think differently about the images I make.
' S I7 I* L! X% c& q% C" ?As a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,2 Y3 A! C, {7 v; ~" d
compact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal
0 y1 Q6 u! m0 ]5 k vartistic and client expectations. The Nikon D800 will set new standards for
2 t: F) n6 a m6 j4 f: ~the high-end 35mm D-SLR market. I have never worked with a 35mm digital
$ K( p6 R: ~; ]: k& Z) dcamera that produces images with such exceptional quality and detail till
: N$ R& g. E, lnow. Particularly, the live view mode enables extremely precise compositions
/ i2 h7 k* q$ Band easy focusing in dim lighting, which simplifies my workflow. Superior3 j B: a7 @* l
quality lenses such as the PC NIKKOR tilt & shift lineup are indispensable for
3 M q; _/ N; }2 yarchitectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they$ J$ u8 m: D. Q+ |; t
perfectly match with the newly invented system and produce breathtakingly
5 G! z G c5 w. k2 S. c* |clean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility# o5 [ a. l- J0 E1 k# Z5 Z
to work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional% I. x3 I) N8 f6 ]" g" F
range of light. It definitely takes my photographic versatility and image quality+ T+ C5 I* } A' N
