Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression

now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3

matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance3 Z1 n& [. V0 F o- ^- u
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D8003 Z0 O* J7 G3 [% t8 b7 K
allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject
" V& F) q, C( N* t# cwithout having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography

image quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was

6 `+ {2 I0 Z0 u) uWhen I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,- B. P' H8 S9 y3 t% N
36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic
9 ~9 P+ f- `0 R; H+ b9 Mrange, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces2 s( e, o2 H7 a7 h" O0 C5 G) ?, {6 C
the look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a
2 G* S0 ~$ ~" B `, ^% U# T: X5 JD-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as1 h# q; a+ ^& ]) E
well as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.
* z. W- w S% d+ C0 Z, KAutofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor( Q& l/ q; O/ e
has noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is" n N2 ` D3 V
easier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while
5 B- N! X- f+ z( S7 s* Walso feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New
; e, s) d, {& ^) U: kcameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features/ k3 p5 s1 i @) a& ~$ ]9 a4 A
in such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality1 b; s( B6 K0 ]7 H7 T1 O
prints and video.) S' p- D" K+ p& \0 U9 A: k
To me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is# |; u1 D9 D, x& u) q
not megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models% x/ R% f6 X K. U$ J
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using+ y. i% h+ l9 I4 K
countless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first
$ u1 _1 ? U+ o/ n/ _sight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws
7 l3 V7 @; R9 Q% i% l L, }8 klike never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of
4 I% Z, { a" J8 macuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I
) Y& A; P$ s) s f: l7 C6 lam enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as
( X7 N/ T2 K" G$ V% O* h; x. Xthough they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse
4 f/ P$ Z' N# {% {" P1 n- a0 D9 |photography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add9 I' x( B0 q/ J
tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the# ^$ e _& T2 ^( h7 W
D800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express

As a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,
