Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression
4 J; E W% g: yof the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is0 i% ~1 K& p% S% u/ U& s: g& g
now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3: r6 K* _2 m" Q. t# `* j- W
megapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution
7 @; ~6 C, K% V' |within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color) k+ _( Y2 E; I$ l+ t
matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance, T6 m& p! `$ L8 Z. R) _* t. R
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800. z: N! r+ J2 b( Y
allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject2 P! `8 U7 X! m3 m8 T4 v
without having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography! P, v1 @6 n0 M* g6 ^
was traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum5 v% @3 D% X. t& L9 G* \
image quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was
4 n" \, i# B4 }* {widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and; g) k/ F0 O& `2 O
convenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown
0 }0 a/ ^! h7 K6 r* v6 _ w/ Pbefore, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,

" O! k* X1 W l9 @/ J5 Z) ]1 D$ \When I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,
5 d/ `( x& q$ Z$ ?7 ?36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic+ h ~7 y* o" I( {5 e+ H" f) t
range, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces" W8 a C1 M- Z9 [+ j6 V0 {
the look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a; |) h" U8 C. C# m# T( z
D-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as! n$ x0 v0 t" i! v- d* A
well as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before. p1 \! I( i" G! z/ O( m
Autofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor
) ]& p" f9 H4 p" {4 ^2 ihas noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is
4 `3 {1 [1 v/ n" r Y7 j' M% weasier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while
' Q, U$ G `6 Z& j$ z, }. balso feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New; W3 L0 ?2 G0 ?$ T' u3 ]( g2 u; ?7 g
cameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features
$ N9 c5 q; h! Zin such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality
% v! o7 w d) A. Y9 P7 R! Cprints and video.* N2 L- k9 [& L% g; M
To me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is
3 w F& H' c8 a- z* K8 m( hnot megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models V4 j# Z0 p$ i- ?# T9 s
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using
: I4 w7 b M0 ` ecountless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first' c; U& s- T3 Y
sight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws% [6 ~$ w. t7 P+ ?+ w0 D
like never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of! n: W0 s' ~! g& k4 V: [; ?
acuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I
- u$ W4 W6 G3 n y$ b/ Y gam enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as! }+ w8 W8 L. ]! G C
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse
, [' J6 o1 u4 d' g: pphotography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add* A) n- k! {- x
tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the
: [ f8 o# r) J ~5 e9 u AD800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express
7 @% D$ z* _9 @) gis that now I will think differently about the images I make.
M8 A x7 o1 c kAs a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,
X1 }3 g0 w! P8 Q" ?compact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal
( f8 P, v# E, L7 [) w8 H4 G0 a6 uartistic and client expectations. The Nikon D800 will set new standards for, @; t4 {" f0 ~" O' p' ^# e
the high-end 35mm D-SLR market. I have never worked with a 35mm digital

now. Particularly, the live view mode enables extremely precise compositions
+ m+ q- W# R" Hand easy focusing in dim lighting, which simplifies my workflow. Superior

( t4 `" W$ Z) _" l4 I. |- Uarchitectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they6 s, N9 g- W, C5 ?: F
perfectly match with the newly invented system and produce breathtakingly
* y7 i8 O7 X5 z& I6 w- H3 dclean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility
/ A W6 d, T3 c' t1 X8 d9 ]to work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional, H4 F( q4 m( _
range of light. It definitely takes my photographic versatility and image quality
