Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression
) f' X9 V% r ?- {of the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is3 r( E. `3 T$ n3 M% z+ h
now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3- M$ A5 L. L( Q# ]7 a
megapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution3 N" T- I7 Z; U) u( [2 I
within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color
" J) Y: W5 `$ s4 G' n- ^6 rmatrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance0 g( i' [1 b( Z1 h
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800; n( I3 \% z' x
allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject
4 V) q- c: i$ z% }2 mwithout having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography3 c! n8 \' Z8 h* u9 M! H0 ^" v
was traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum: Q! D7 h9 z8 ~6 e/ h/ K
image quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was, |- d% r0 [" S G# I% T$ S
widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and5 H% d* D, [3 T
convenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown
+ @! P% _& C- ?& W% ]9 g5 N0 y' mbefore, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,9 s* l2 \6 V& x
thanks to the D800.
5 j& ~! ?3 Z; y. tWhen I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,
g( ?: _0 {# y- s* l- i$ _% g- c36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic) q. D4 a: j/ |" x
range, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces
, k% H, U% S$ S2 l3 f( v2 X0 H* _ p0 qthe look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a
" i! l+ O9 W, O5 ?D-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as: J# S6 S. b3 e2 ]: z
well as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.
/ C+ f( i! E7 \Autofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor
+ @8 y( b9 u. {+ W; f. T' ohas noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is
7 R# }- K6 _( {$ M. h( f. ueasier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while7 W: B- s4 J$ P+ K' Y
also feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New
( l3 Q4 G% C5 r2 P* j, R; `cameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features7 q. H5 R4 m% |: d
in such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality
& l8 e" X [& l7 n5 t% u( X i* f* }- pprints and video.
* `3 g4 W: B. g1 Z2 z) e* cTo me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is
+ H& h o R- K% k0 enot megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models2 c$ r5 N! R+ g6 v' r- O6 z6 P
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using
) I: l8 p6 t8 r$ n( \countless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first
. p9 d& S h2 V# k! V: ]sight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws5 s! {7 D$ Q' S0 `2 ]2 _
like never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of
# i" p% B- @, F' ]- Oacuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I) e% S V+ g7 D9 b: g
am enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as; r5 X* S2 `6 M0 ~; @
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse
# d7 b1 {- E+ O8 B1 J9 \photography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add
( u5 a. i3 h* \( f2 r# Ztremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the, ?- w$ m: Y! s) ^$ b% s
D800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express, t5 B. e/ {0 `: o5 ]0 ]+ u/ e
is that now I will think differently about the images I make.
! h2 {% v& t$ x8 X) IAs a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,( k* l/ N1 ?% ]4 q9 q0 x
compact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal

architectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they
