of the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is

within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color# ~1 d: E, b N
matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance
8 Q8 I+ u5 l( y4 K8 K/ din low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800
7 y/ g* i6 Q8 u! d# ]allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject
+ s' I* V( h1 u% _" ?' T: ^without having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography
( ^7 h) e' Q1 B$ V u+ G) E% [9 fwas traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum# x) M( c8 r& V$ `3 c! f$ h- d
image quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was
% u0 P$ ]& Y9 y7 N8 W& S3 b$ Ewidely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and4 r9 c2 L3 w' f/ G; F: x
convenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown
3 s, M+ \- H4 |7 L' tbefore, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,
$ i9 w7 Q5 _0 H0 X, r0 pthanks to the D800.8 A* y. t6 S$ P3 |6 l
When I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,
4 p( a0 k: B9 j4 m9 d# o7 R7 S; O36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic
4 e* r" Z# h* {/ C f* M* t" frange, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces3 r+ K: _4 N, e2 A) s
the look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a0 H: W v$ W7 A$ f1 X. ^( {) g
D-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as
# l; F' `( D8 J7 H5 Q( p' Dwell as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.
' r) U* M; i2 t) ~7 QAutofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor( c8 E q4 A$ }
has noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is
, O+ u. U- g: Q; Teasier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while r8 S7 D, N# f; n
also feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New7 h; N; N, m" w- e, a( E& J
cameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features
- R4 d; v; {. ~" ]8 i* s4 c9 ^5 Oin such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality/ O# l8 o3 _1 ^: m( v; L
prints and video.. N0 r" N$ q7 |$ B; _
To me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is; a5 X2 A% C6 S9 s; a- h# h- j! S
not megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models+ r" }/ S! c# e$ H
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using1 Y% y; J! d" |5 S' r9 `" w0 l5 t
countless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first% C* e7 S" W9 Y( J) _$ r
sight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws
) N7 D0 B' }5 s& i t, Z5 plike never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of
% p1 g g! Q% k1 q1 B' t0 o5 aacuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I# k; j0 c/ ~7 {2 Q) }
am enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as4 _8 v: y# O4 {% i
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse
$ |/ L ~2 p% M9 vphotography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add% Y# H% R6 F( o M
tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the
: A" b% U4 z, f9 MD800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express

As a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,+ u: D. f* K) }. l" v( d
compact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal
