of the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is' v( W; r: }9 {, h# R( {
now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3
, o7 h _1 N4 z( l# A8 b7 Q+ |% Ymegapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution- o/ h2 k0 y8 p3 C
within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color* _8 k2 J+ i2 p' L0 N
matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance5 h* I3 G) _ C9 i# X# k _4 I* }1 s) j
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D8008 ^' y* j; D7 g/ L/ ] U& J
allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject

- z+ ~5 d7 z% H. Bwas traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum
. O$ G8 H6 j" [* N6 K m0 [image quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was
, K; Q4 m0 p Cwidely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and
0 Y& a* \- P% t+ Qconvenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown2 |: g7 u9 C A6 j+ V1 o
before, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,. u( I( i1 D7 v: D0 N
thanks to the D800.
6 f( a# N$ ^' s, E) @When I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,
& C g* { K0 j5 C$ ]9 H& P36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic7 V0 C; t$ {- \6 Y& y- s
range, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces
' l9 p( e7 ^6 o, e2 L" L( xthe look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a: O9 C, ~1 d3 w0 U% @# f8 G4 d
D-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as: e) j4 F. o$ W0 @( S* H: o/ O
well as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.
& @- n7 M+ ?! g% NAutofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor
% i/ W( }3 }% q( F9 @has noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is
2 K: B9 G# s8 D6 |+ q6 f" qeasier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while
* D8 X; H7 b& [2 f# a+ L* h, i+ _also feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New( i- W; F% [. W" d
cameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features
, a! r& C4 I1 g3 V: W/ Ain such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality! L% u6 W% A7 d6 v. B5 `6 `! Q

To me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is
- v; }. n% n9 |* }+ L3 ?& cnot megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models
& E# l/ v9 i3 J3 J( Gare important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using
2 q- V/ u3 ]' Ccountless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first# f; d$ e {* Y0 I/ [, t# U& Y
sight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws% T& v6 W. _5 J2 k& ^: a: p
like never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of
" t/ I8 r( X7 l: G- N8 p3 S7 Jacuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I1 _1 A1 G2 X: U
am enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as6 u& [. e/ r/ W4 i6 V- o# i( F
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse2 @/ C; Y1 f6 O$ x
photography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add
& T3 l1 S0 s" ltremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the
, E/ @7 p0 e- G: c- \D800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express
