Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression: @$ q; y! c" Y2 y, [3 g
of the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is
# u7 D" ^7 i* ]6 {now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.39 @" ~ ~$ z# ?3 Q! g3 i+ S0 S
megapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution
" G; c/ m% s9 v$ n7 E% Nwithin a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color
% K1 D( h) B! Z3 q& Y6 f, r/ @- Wmatrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance" G- _( E3 L0 Y* S
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800' R1 Q; H/ I% d- b6 B
allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject& y! V7 C$ e6 G# {, X6 M+ C$ I
without having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography
4 C% n1 y1 o8 s' X( e' ]was traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum
7 a0 C& K( D. ^2 Z0 d6 Wimage quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was
9 V2 }+ v* j( F+ K0 @. fwidely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and
8 k& {& F A" J/ @5 J$ ]convenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown
2 X$ A3 x5 y: N# C3 zbefore, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,. Y) I: f4 L+ { j9 A# B H
thanks to the D800.
+ j. T, n# j4 H9 zWhen I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,
5 ~, z9 M9 ]1 W& }2 z7 v. h36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic
3 E& J8 ?1 o5 Z: i/ |* \range, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces0 k( l R9 h1 o7 M6 ^5 \
the look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a- ]* M% w% {9 i6 q# U6 d
D-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as$ ~7 U8 p' N1 O2 u2 _
well as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.1 H9 y3 @$ J0 d+ g. j9 N% J
Autofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor
6 `3 H3 l) m* [/ r1 ?& @5 B/ b: hhas noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is- \5 i8 Z0 E+ q7 y4 z8 e
easier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while0 s8 ?+ z: j0 H. p
also feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New
' u$ j# f" F4 a2 ]/ {4 M( lcameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features. S' B' f! ]2 M+ ^; O
in such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality& a) Z. q; N G% K. M D: f
prints and video.! ?/ y4 |5 [0 c, F5 |0 T
To me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is+ P8 @ A/ @* n \, O# _3 s
not megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models* b( G3 j3 ^1 i {3 v
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using, _6 C6 |7 R0 e: I8 r$ z S
countless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first
6 f, N% j3 W* j/ k# h0 ]sight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws+ r+ r3 X! s0 X7 z
like never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of
) y( t/ a& D* |# m J+ y6 C5 J* yacuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I" t. M1 n4 U7 D/ ~
am enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as* a x" _7 K) N' B) U
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse
6 o; L1 j; ]6 f0 Z* Nphotography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add% i2 F0 |; o2 S+ v; w
tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the

As a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,- ?+ i1 f/ T+ z' u# H' k
compact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal; l" i# \) i1 D
artistic and client expectations. The Nikon D800 will set new standards for: i4 T: @% [1 v3 @) g
the high-end 35mm D-SLR market. I have never worked with a 35mm digital
6 [' B9 j8 U# X/ qcamera that produces images with such exceptional quality and detail till( ~6 L( O( x2 R! S
now. Particularly, the live view mode enables extremely precise compositions
0 Q& H6 f' O6 P+ B/ H0 ?and easy focusing in dim lighting, which simplifies my workflow. Superior" D+ M, H4 C! E3 V& e) ]% Z
quality lenses such as the PC NIKKOR tilt & shift lineup are indispensable for! `( d# X+ f& a4 X T2 d7 V2 F
architectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they
0 g) u$ i8 ]7 G* \- Qperfectly match with the newly invented system and produce breathtakingly0 [ z+ P. Q: v: u* x& a/ ]
clean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility R# |" M4 H+ z5 b; P2 |: Q" ~/ T+ ~
to work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional7 P% i- s/ ]' \& Z# J- I
range of light. It definitely takes my photographic versatility and image quality/ e4 Z+ v8 J- ] {. z
