Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression2 M# a' ]7 O# [2 [5 O6 k2 p+ m! h
of the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is
& N: i0 t4 R, R) L- E7 s! |now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3
# Y4 _: q' }1 ~3 O# D$ n( w- S: Hmegapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution. ^, y9 S! C- v) m2 @2 s. `( S
within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color. M, Z. v) X6 ]) H
matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance# W. N9 u; s( y% W
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800
% b& ~2 M# W) n0 g, M! t# d1 C, Dallows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject
" B1 ?: e( x, nwithout having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography
) Y/ r' H- t4 W; b5 k" [' r1 O1 Owas traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum5 ~8 U& l# Q3 c# y
image quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was( H) p0 B. K7 E( x2 Q3 r
widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and% c& L; X6 L- G9 n6 C4 |
convenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown
9 K' L0 H5 W" j/ l Y8 |before, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,

6 x0 u( T- A7 L$ _5 N' b% `When I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,
9 `, p) Y# U$ \- Q& a) `) X36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic
2 e; A1 g4 A% X9 x8 p$ vrange, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces

D-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as

Autofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor h( d0 g$ x2 H' |" C
has noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is/ W5 ?$ x7 K' p4 J+ X
easier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while
: T# ]; A8 t( A$ r7 B, valso feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New7 R+ Q* K0 s$ N; J, b( U4 |
cameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features
+ l6 T. J( X* F) t6 X! t7 ~in such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality6 ]) Q( N" `, M B
prints and video.
# |7 N0 V. f" o3 {$ kTo me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is
) o; ^( S$ ]3 d& ^& \3 F! _not megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models* l5 |; H" T7 M6 ]/ t2 W4 e6 c, L
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using
5 s2 G& \3 O; r+ v2 ?8 _& kcountless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first1 C8 w) o9 u& Z* Z/ {8 c. A! g- L
sight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws2 ^, e! K& q! [8 P+ A0 ]5 e
like never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of$ k4 Q* i6 X. u$ B7 w# z
acuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I: B) W. G1 T. f! v
am enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as# Y& h7 n$ U" G5 m! h5 N, N
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse T! A; L4 J4 O- ?! x4 l
photography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add4 Y) L O' s2 t# ]0 W
tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the
2 I! v3 e& @0 e1 E6 c1 r, t( {D800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express

& R, p% }6 @) nAs a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,

architectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they! W7 ?1 O2 s& n0 Y/ j7 ?
perfectly match with the newly invented system and produce breathtakingly9 ?1 E% ?0 _8 r, a8 f
clean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility
& S! P% `, b# }; M3 v8 bto work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional
, [6 l' x$ _* u: C1 r) }1 frange of light. It definitely takes my photographic versatility and image quality
