Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression. {$ \( e" e% I7 b
of the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is
& z0 P; K! O# I" W5 tnow inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.32 f4 E+ l% m1 C1 Q( e
megapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution) @& |' C/ y8 y" Z5 }
within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color
0 L7 u9 k5 t9 ~. lmatrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance
; x& j& ^& r. y9 h$ oin low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800% c( z3 u' c, q6 N0 S
allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject: v# C7 p4 j. |- R" N8 Q n- P
without having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography
$ e j5 Y4 t9 E4 v" f$ hwas traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum1 q3 r* s/ `: {- x5 x
image quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was: P) ?$ w5 ]6 K: @
widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and+ c4 i; a9 s1 C9 K
convenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown, s* { N! o- @2 ~: @
before, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,1 B7 \) p9 _, \) w% g- K
thanks to the D800.
' o9 f7 T- b( A1 S; @ r8 a, EWhen I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,+ S; v; w0 s$ q
36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic1 T. }8 ^8 ^3 ^$ e# a: A
range, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces1 }9 l$ b6 I& b& w3 V4 y/ o
the look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a1 x5 ]' _- l/ h- v
D-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as
4 W; c! ?! x- M/ t N! Uwell as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.
( [8 }9 B5 K0 ?4 V* pAutofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor
/ z% h1 L; R- k, @- zhas noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is. S I y0 F) a8 d/ t" |3 y
easier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while
: K P3 Y5 }2 M) P( \* B6 w6 Talso feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New
( q- A/ q5 H* }8 u9 ], {; z7 Q, bcameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features. H3 X( W4 Q; n5 ]$ a% \
in such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality

1 j8 v$ ^. I# z6 I9 QTo me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is: H \& a, Z' [3 b2 u& n0 |
not megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models
" L( A2 @ J. l! Z1 X: a/ Iare important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using
& W: o% r6 \8 [) P9 y# Ncountless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first* Z. l \4 L' H
sight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws
# ]+ T7 w% N9 {! x4 ^like never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of
1 U4 m8 X- R" ?9 W8 Z S( ]7 m; tacuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I
1 B1 \$ I4 S* j& f! fam enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as' t* k7 }1 o$ \9 G: m8 F, v
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse* J& e0 n3 s$ M5 H
photography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add! l6 F( V4 b( z. s& @+ x9 V
tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the8 j9 O+ g0 \9 ?! N. I
D800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express' F4 P& Y8 J; \0 t$ T
is that now I will think differently about the images I make./ @$ k% O$ q: B/ J
As a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,7 [* R8 |$ |# v6 @9 y3 ^7 a
compact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal
# \( J+ `1 l. X Y7 _3 _8 U; @artistic and client expectations. The Nikon D800 will set new standards for: V/ y9 o& u0 g5 p+ t
the high-end 35mm D-SLR market. I have never worked with a 35mm digital
$ I0 }6 ]- H3 J Ecamera that produces images with such exceptional quality and detail till& J4 p& t7 n3 Q+ [2 s
now. Particularly, the live view mode enables extremely precise compositions
( G- V4 `5 ^ B8 Jand easy focusing in dim lighting, which simplifies my workflow. Superior) g: O* I) v! N; N4 q T
quality lenses such as the PC NIKKOR tilt & shift lineup are indispensable for j$ M. D8 `# X
architectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they2 \5 L$ v; f8 t
perfectly match with the newly invented system and produce breathtakingly% ]4 C& P' X, s0 b' V
clean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility V8 `9 d( ~6 u1 P+ c( _
to work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional( P; b1 j( |7 ~) K4 k6 C
range of light. It definitely takes my photographic versatility and image quality4 d' I/ w; h8 V( ^
to a new level. What a new companion!
