Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression
3 d* O2 V4 ?* h% ^& Cof the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is9 y# ]1 u& a4 ]' W5 f2 d/ O
now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3
* Z$ J9 ^1 U* }9 V, r8 f2 [megapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution
0 Q) R$ F3 c! e T h4 p r5 gwithin a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color% i) O/ D" q9 d, E
matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance4 d& u/ Q* j: a$ L* S$ Y9 p; H
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800
- _5 O; i( j& g( ^+ H2 `2 d# callows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject3 p& \$ H9 }8 V. ~9 g" d7 s! y& n
without having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography% z' L) e; |3 @$ ~9 W
was traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum
) _" J2 l2 A+ x$ @* _3 S: e# k; x' Wimage quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was
9 X/ C# M9 d F9 U ]/ o8 Jwidely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and
+ A* R. R& E0 e k m2 K) Xconvenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown0 O* R. D1 c0 C
before, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,

& C/ K" @3 e% O; y B- W* P" SWhen I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,
& T( H( a( c4 ]7 G5 x36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic
- |- X' @! _- y! q: \. Erange, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces
" s6 E% z0 k5 n! b+ {" E5 I( Othe look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a8 O% E: H% j; N& f; ~+ g; w2 L9 Z
D-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as

Autofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor. g% [, U( L/ \) n9 d) y, d
has noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is
% m4 _9 C7 ]% ]8 v; N, heasier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while
2 ^( s- v* y6 C* q# B: @; v& Walso feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New
' J9 n9 M4 Y3 N! e/ R* zcameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features
4 b2 M% ~$ W% o' ain such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality
1 ~/ }( n7 P/ T9 e$ ~) xprints and video.
' Q/ [2 I/ y5 L+ y' E3 L' ^To me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is
: A$ V6 ?5 A& M$ `0 }+ A. Znot megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models
' Z( l2 y1 d. a& G6 `# `7 k% Yare important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using' Y) f; `7 R4 |
countless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first
& Y. A4 p J" g( [sight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws
+ P: ]2 E5 V! }; elike never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of5 V" Q( h9 L$ t n6 `: O- `
acuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I
9 l$ `; B4 a% A# v- k. w7 Zam enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as
# n* g' U" ^8 k F! I" a) {though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse/ F+ p# u; r7 S+ e, F( Z+ z3 E: N
photography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add
- M, i: v, U# jtremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the/ r+ h5 b# C+ o% O4 i# o
D800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express: D2 N7 X m& |$ r
is that now I will think differently about the images I make.
' W! z! m: _& Z( i: [As a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,4 n* M+ M/ U: `! g
compact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal
% }2 a' X7 g" Partistic and client expectations. The Nikon D800 will set new standards for

and easy focusing in dim lighting, which simplifies my workflow. Superior
0 ]. k* W6 v+ |3 [, e \quality lenses such as the PC NIKKOR tilt & shift lineup are indispensable for3 [) i" E" d3 K g# S: D
architectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they9 _/ u5 [* H3 P; ~- j
perfectly match with the newly invented system and produce breathtakingly
* B- k& n: H8 E* Nclean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility
' n( F, }# m, S8 c/ _to work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional0 O: f& x, {4 J( P2 o: [. q+ a% j0 s6 [* j
range of light. It definitely takes my photographic versatility and image quality
