Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression

9 J# E. Y- a9 S9 B6 i# H! g, nnow inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3% C* o- v! E7 L; ?) `0 X3 S) J
megapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution
, P9 g+ G6 m/ K7 \ }within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color
' w% w# J8 R$ i2 f; [matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance3 `' t" A8 [% c' t- k- H Z
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800
: I7 F- w9 l, ~, N vallows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject
% B; F( o M, b1 Swithout having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography
1 ^/ D8 o% Q, C/ B1 iwas traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum% j# i- b' J. ]
image quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was/ x$ F- }6 l8 O( ]" o4 p
widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and' B$ U& |0 W: ~0 Y+ C9 C/ ?( r
convenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown* f3 c: D- z# h& g+ L
before, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,1 [2 h7 Z# @( n! c. g
thanks to the D800.; J0 A- o, B+ u- y* v* N
When I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,
) f/ o; m' c8 J6 k! N6 V) z0 q36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic
% i! a4 Y* G, srange, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces
. D% b h# u) d% k9 S- lthe look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a
- ]- v3 u* ]4 U9 b3 b0 r. J z! u. X$ \4 FD-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as5 V9 p5 P6 y$ K' l$ Q
well as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.
2 e" ?$ D7 e, [; DAutofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor4 m+ i/ q+ a! h. B# z& {0 |
has noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is
( y7 W) J* {) q5 G5 J9 Q1 n( ^: E6 yeasier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while9 _ i4 [& R& J( \; B8 A" G+ Z0 u6 v) Q
also feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New" q! W" f7 j+ p) b2 Z; |4 Y5 L+ n
cameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features* b3 S F5 J" B- m3 G
in such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality3 i* c/ o8 j1 x
prints and video.( h3 m9 J$ N/ w! F$ N
To me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is; [8 l% C& O2 a1 c
not megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models
8 g* o$ P* Y# Y/ N s0 f4 Tare important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using1 `2 i% J$ n+ s* |/ ^
countless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first
5 |, }( z8 F* csight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws
9 x9 I0 E% S% Ilike never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of
) O( o: Z: N, L+ J6 b9 K) R6 t7 N4 gacuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I! x5 I0 A3 ^! q' ?3 [2 Y: g0 I
am enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as+ U- P9 V$ d) e) K, D. P1 `) K/ q! g0 I7 [
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse( D7 `7 \4 ~3 T4 e
photography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add
0 X+ o `9 c! L* o' K. \tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the
6 ~# [: ]2 H* I6 qD800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express3 x* r/ n( \6 \! y
is that now I will think differently about the images I make.
+ } G0 w T& Q! |* [As a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,
4 h/ `: X3 n$ |; B7 N8 ccompact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal1 U i1 e. G5 i, \
artistic and client expectations. The Nikon D800 will set new standards for4 n, l! B R! B7 E) z" G0 Y% Z* l
the high-end 35mm D-SLR market. I have never worked with a 35mm digital
' J. z& s. h# L6 G, P c% lcamera that produces images with such exceptional quality and detail till+ ?. d' c2 O4 D/ x, X# p6 ]
now. Particularly, the live view mode enables extremely precise compositions
, ^5 J4 `8 [5 \9 e7 u, band easy focusing in dim lighting, which simplifies my workflow. Superior
% Z7 b( M) K3 {- E% \quality lenses such as the PC NIKKOR tilt & shift lineup are indispensable for }* @# k$ e W" b9 A5 O
architectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they
$ p2 b: H5 [2 A. X; R) [! H( _) H2 Iperfectly match with the newly invented system and produce breathtakingly+ \! r2 r# X* _
clean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility
4 K5 P+ c; A7 V$ K7 B/ k. jto work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional
$ {* J& J3 P9 qrange of light. It definitely takes my photographic versatility and image quality5 w( v+ d0 ^6 y8 ~" g. _ B
to a new level. What a new companion!
