of the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is$ A& R/ T& q# o
now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3
# d$ c& Q* ` \. q9 ymegapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution
# t) m+ ?7 @8 z5 @& Uwithin a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color: m5 D( K+ F; d. N$ B
matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance
) P2 z( n$ k* `5 O' Uin low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D8005 w/ [; f/ t6 E+ J+ j9 V
allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject% _& w4 ~7 t% q7 p, x! \
without having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography
- W+ F/ a! }6 W$ H8 M. a) Cwas traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum
4 p) c8 f6 X1 J1 i V) s1 bimage quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was
5 y1 A. Y5 z4 Mwidely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and
( Q0 m, m; q0 f$ W/ Lconvenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown$ J, S9 p; [$ S; L Z) o9 c
before, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,
$ q( y0 {8 q3 H- y' bthanks to the D800.2 x; q) x* V$ N5 H2 v) t, S
When I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,7 g, x6 N5 r! n8 `
36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic
+ ^4 d3 L+ m+ i; }* Vrange, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces( _7 L1 d a; h% w- O
the look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a4 c$ ~& _6 Y- h% ~1 r& X
D-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as8 L; {/ ~! @9 b4 K+ a6 h" ~. K
well as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.
F- F2 Z& P4 q! H" H" z; l0 sAutofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor) T( F; [* r8 p9 j- D$ O, J
has noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is1 h9 T! H8 {5 @+ n( P) m
easier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while" J% s4 ` R `. j# ]! M7 k: E
also feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New
) M0 M ?+ u- F3 Hcameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features( h+ K* \5 Z5 [, c0 H
in such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality
) d' f# ]7 J5 G% m* _( }4 Xprints and video.
/ k0 m5 A, T eTo me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is' t9 t" {' C1 D; D+ Q4 i8 i, o# c
not megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models3 O9 V9 {5 o' Z8 U4 b5 K" J% O3 ?5 j
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using
* @. I$ F3 M0 B0 P; j% z4 }countless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first
) s' M/ i# G% _6 i! jsight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws, V: X' v; D8 F% ^; t7 G/ Q
like never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of
1 H8 O9 S$ N e# Z/ ^acuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I
+ L4 r! Q; H+ m, {5 K- D. w, dam enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as9 }, c+ K$ K" s' \, Y n) p
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse
% ]+ h, i/ J% f/ rphotography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add2 ^, R# ^& s r( B
tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the
