Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression0 Q0 J9 F9 [) o Q7 H, W% o' E
of the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is2 M& S6 O$ l$ N
now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3
+ U' @. f1 t% K2 O6 Q4 wmegapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution
% `" ?. I: @- i; U; O8 e1 }9 _within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color. x- A$ p2 Z6 A1 h8 G
matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance+ a, K, ~7 k4 G
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800" w2 a1 B( }& e& U+ h( A3 [
allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject
$ J0 L5 L5 W* g% _3 l; _without having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography
$ w. ~. K. N! f4 |0 Iwas traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum
# w4 P6 \ ]: P/ O2 ?' f' simage quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was$ R# L) z6 V0 I: U
widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and
8 O4 W* R& V1 R, q2 [0 o+ yconvenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown
* a% X& Y/ V6 @, w4 d* wbefore, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,

0 [0 c- U* q9 y* h7 EWhen I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,
# e. c( s$ ]/ \$ T# I. P& u36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic* @. A+ B- M% R' Y }) A
range, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces. D4 B/ L: ~1 [+ u' k

has noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is
* e+ F: \7 @$ d) x. j7 V! q: heasier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while
7 C% b0 A! W4 G& Balso feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New
! b9 G* A& ^1 G9 y/ @cameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features
1 @# h( l# y( O9 [8 f) p* d7 nin such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality
* k, W5 x( Y' P9 ^9 b% y$ u I; wprints and video.
" n I8 Y8 Q" `+ QTo me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is
, u. y$ z/ S5 V( `$ x$ r( q$ E: j* V( qnot megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models2 S# m7 Q" T% p% y
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using I- l" B( x" T p
countless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first
7 k9 L c5 ]0 i2 tsight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws3 f5 n4 x5 {1 w* L$ Y
like never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of
+ M! h1 M$ Z+ Sacuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I
?+ _0 _2 L! `, ]6 C" Q: ham enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as9 r' t3 N2 t9 O& I: A$ t# G
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse; q$ ~) g8 Q f7 m. u3 h# F- c5 m
photography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add/ ?2 Q9 e0 P, k3 p) U& b
tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the

As a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,% X8 j2 r0 u: h. `/ X; ~0 \( f
compact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal
