Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression* f1 y: K, p4 a: A% d4 t
of the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is9 A' A+ w- J& s- f" m7 E
now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3
: \4 |( G4 [% o! |megapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution
- p. Y/ \* P' s0 i0 h9 S6 O) rwithin a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color
6 X7 X( d" q" Q6 wmatrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance5 b0 G8 L% E$ O) p
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800
6 ~3 c# K3 q% }allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject
8 H+ e/ _( C. M- g& D* k2 Awithout having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography: u, [, B0 Y$ h
was traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum( C% a! W2 d! N y7 i* j: Y
image quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was; b7 Q3 Q# {5 {5 q7 X4 r! `
widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and
O* ?- L/ Q. O5 k/ s! dconvenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown X7 {/ F6 d% w! f$ d* G3 b, X
before, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,( f6 U a% b) p" A

When I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,, z3 j7 Y$ W+ t5 u' s
36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic+ q& [1 j7 _- H* X/ T+ z
range, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces
# v+ q9 a$ }4 ~! e# }9 k% hthe look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a
" p5 n' L; i3 f0 f+ \! lD-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as, u Y( a9 }+ C" z G
well as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.
8 Q f. D. F* \2 v E6 J4 DAutofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor
2 V6 t; X" L$ b x" y) s4 Vhas noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is; g- o- m$ [8 q @% e" B2 V# s: S
easier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while% {5 g5 e! V4 l6 O. [( W m
also feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New% l# |& ^# a2 `% Y" \5 ~
cameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features' z* v2 n1 [1 O. y" E7 E% F! B
in such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality) m$ e) w( s2 o3 W
prints and video.
6 c. W( j; Y0 Z' ^" @3 w3 @To me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is0 ?5 z2 m" h( E3 B! z
not megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models" e1 R- y3 I5 Y6 O1 O) d
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using7 o; U& A( Y( o1 {
countless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first
p9 k" i% ?! p+ S- c. a6 S9 r% Rsight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws
) S9 |7 l0 ]8 d! M, i! Llike never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of6 n$ e5 d$ t' X3 O9 R6 L
acuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I
" \% n' @. }, V, I8 R0 y8 vam enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as- H2 J0 F# w$ I* g
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse
* v$ W( I8 s! E' Z* dphotography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add7 x0 l$ Z, E8 b0 b4 v" O& o
tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the6 H0 G( F8 {) j9 M" q
D800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express4 E8 M ]4 F1 w' A# j1 g
is that now I will think differently about the images I make.
" U3 t- C% U0 y0 Z- }+ B9 I; h% gAs a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,
8 ~2 U% Y4 G! v2 [' q- Ucompact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal9 \/ A' F% d) ^4 M9 ~! B
artistic and client expectations. The Nikon D800 will set new standards for

% G+ h; r! E" f# T! j: u( sand easy focusing in dim lighting, which simplifies my workflow. Superior4 s/ k* w2 M1 u1 J
quality lenses such as the PC NIKKOR tilt & shift lineup are indispensable for
; R( N+ q8 D f, g% ~6 o" farchitectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they# m( l% E. M/ l$ `
perfectly match with the newly invented system and produce breathtakingly
{& s# z$ q4 {clean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility3 X& o3 A) o( L6 q' [: {" u* U
to work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional
( ?. {! Y8 d; V+ n1 Jrange of light. It definitely takes my photographic versatility and image quality
