Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression0 G6 @5 B2 {3 ?
of the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is2 S$ K( S1 U: o. U* k+ f: f
now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3

within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color& Y" C8 x0 A5 V) Q5 ~1 _- e
matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance
4 @( Q; g6 o$ f# B0 r/ r6 [1 ~ kin low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800! @. s2 W4 K+ w _( z; s/ L
allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject* x$ L% E% r j
without having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography- s. Y( m0 Q! e8 t
was traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum
+ S M( E) n9 x* l- [/ }& l% E Ximage quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was) W& E5 \! x1 c0 Q5 s
widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and( |% l2 ?9 q N! s* w
convenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown
( D. z' _; u6 r' t. K* {$ O. abefore, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,

5 o; i7 K# a: DWhen I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,4 s# j. {, H5 [, x1 j* F. x
36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic' a# h6 b g5 ]' q. |; s
range, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces, I3 T3 J6 u, W9 ]
the look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a) r9 g1 N/ |* s/ J! Z% Z: ^
D-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as
+ d2 w% C/ _+ Z( iwell as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.
7 m6 u6 _9 A; N" v$ f. wAutofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor5 A o- ]+ G! P3 B; [' t
has noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is
8 h! D5 l: g4 Q4 m2 S' Q7 Seasier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while* `& ^ W2 d( R7 o7 Y
also feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New
7 j Z( R/ N/ p. ]! p. r; ~, [& Rcameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features( Z7 D; U+ {0 z# D2 m
in such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality) e; f7 E K$ v" L" [$ o6 ?* g* r
prints and video.
5 K! M; A. R4 w# T: W5 TTo me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is
1 R: m" F3 u& hnot megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models& P( ~' i" x% D5 \* Y
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using s" o7 D$ ]. X9 t# P- N) n. N" j
countless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first
/ G6 t0 q2 e0 n3 ssight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws
( R0 I" m: _. d2 Zlike never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of3 y2 t7 X8 j0 ^1 Z4 }. F' {- w; I
acuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I
x7 v4 j( s" d: c: jam enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as/ ?5 v d2 l8 f& I" q
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse
, T( m$ f3 ^- n5 u6 Nphotography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add$ D3 r U; f3 Q* X
tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the/ b6 k) T6 A# o/ v$ Z8 L) U
D800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express7 u0 K8 V% r! ]6 Z! m
is that now I will think differently about the images I make.
' o: S/ T% }* l* r dAs a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,) b- @3 t. S6 r
compact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal$ ]3 F/ @$ k/ |6 V/ `& A
artistic and client expectations. The Nikon D800 will set new standards for( _4 h- R: m9 h3 ]
the high-end 35mm D-SLR market. I have never worked with a 35mm digital4 j( D3 X" M f1 N5 f1 X4 V6 R5 [' H
camera that produces images with such exceptional quality and detail till- U! C" E# t3 y# U E0 E& p
now. Particularly, the live view mode enables extremely precise compositions# V2 n& V: [( t
and easy focusing in dim lighting, which simplifies my workflow. Superior
7 R1 l$ t7 k/ Q J4 R$ oquality lenses such as the PC NIKKOR tilt & shift lineup are indispensable for
" i, y& ^* M1 X/ k2 [% t q, L$ sarchitectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they2 w( e7 |. U% i4 _+ O1 g" Z8 y
perfectly match with the newly invented system and produce breathtakingly
4 O# s; v& t" m8 H; x6 ]7 E3 H! a; b$ Hclean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility
& S a' A w3 W5 P3 C# c- D/ ^to work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional% x, x4 K2 ~3 I0 c# E) D2 F+ ^
range of light. It definitely takes my photographic versatility and image quality
