Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression5 N6 w d2 B! k
of the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is7 r; {" C$ B' x/ f7 b
now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3
0 F+ l ^% ]6 m4 i, s0 U7 @megapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution
, E) O, \ I% a; cwithin a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color- T! ~5 |' d! {- N
matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance: T( O! F. ?) r3 g7 d# a" d! ^. O
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800- _, s" i- V9 ?/ \
allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject
- o, x% \/ b N0 \# }1 U* W# wwithout having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography
g A ]# ]; w$ k5 A' t! z4 J/ rwas traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum
3 N- z. x& `' ]4 f5 limage quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was8 e5 P' `1 t4 e# C5 w5 c. `
widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and3 \/ ^: B R$ z3 I& E
convenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown
* f8 C' c' t; m) q' rbefore, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised, R) u- \8 R0 {& F! E n" c
thanks to the D800.* \; X6 P/ C3 m Q: c$ Y
When I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,
5 Q0 z/ D' c2 n- a! E3 S7 F6 g36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic( X+ s# o( B0 C& V, x$ ?6 u& u. W9 o
range, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces* x, n0 q$ t/ L$ q
the look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a
& s- \3 L5 n* h$ h1 ~D-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as
' `$ y- ?( |* j$ ]7 X' _well as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.
: ^9 {* T- x f2 L* W$ MAutofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor
: z6 ^- ^% j0 m! |% a% I1 ]- m6 _2 Fhas noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is
$ {2 l( Y7 I8 x0 l i7 H7 {! _, y+ heasier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while4 R+ P3 O6 ? |5 m2 |7 I
also feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New
^9 C% v8 |' e1 B$ V+ v% G# zcameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features* z( F% |1 z# |% I& ~
in such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality! p5 c3 w; w$ Y& J% O6 p( R
prints and video.
; o1 V/ o2 {; ^% nTo me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is9 E) d# V" C& D5 M
not megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models# k0 ~7 o" @. @# H
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using# V6 ?! c8 W" }( V) {$ Z
countless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first! f3 B! Q& X" I( E$ V1 V
sight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws
+ }, t4 @0 ~( `% c& xlike never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of7 ]4 a; {; e6 Y* D9 B
acuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I
3 r! ^( G, y5 U: Z% dam enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as: [4 h' `3 T+ q1 ]% i
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse
( W; [, b0 d! g- D6 o0 Jphotography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add! x' D) q p& _% u7 j
tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the
+ v- M* ]' {1 K! mD800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express: B& ^, z9 a2 i8 H% O1 o" L; Y( }5 ~% p
is that now I will think differently about the images I make.- i1 k9 [7 m( Y
As a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,
' O; g# f& k" e6 @4 j- bcompact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal9 `$ q* g: c3 k3 g* G
artistic and client expectations. The Nikon D800 will set new standards for

( e0 y7 s1 E3 [; z" p+ }architectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they* M8 p: D1 S; v0 k$ v( F0 ^3 r
perfectly match with the newly invented system and produce breathtakingly( a0 ?: B& U. L/ t* x. x5 E# S
clean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility
: y# e5 e7 l- gto work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional" g( m- A( ?3 }) Y
range of light. It definitely takes my photographic versatility and image quality
