Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression
. P3 O/ |8 T# j$ E& Y; ^# Zof the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is+ O1 r! }1 s* s h! L
now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3
) n1 S- a+ A5 [& q7 L* q x- }megapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution4 \7 ?9 O! d4 _1 v( H
within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color5 N d$ \) e( G) O9 P( V" t
matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance( h+ s8 v4 J7 a# P/ @
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800
0 B' r t( D4 f( A7 p0 [4 l hallows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject: k( Q, N3 @+ F7 H! p/ v8 t
without having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography- I9 E4 z" n( p7 e
was traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum
9 h$ \) z3 v6 Aimage quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was6 w/ v& z6 ]+ X
widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and
) a9 ~0 |1 r( M% D+ V" a% uconvenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown
8 X& N3 u+ }. R" t- L- p- V$ |/ mbefore, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,% F; o% f% A G4 a/ F) u( O
thanks to the D800.
$ ]( s/ }/ k6 k9 X+ b2 t/ M/ J% ?When I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,
& X4 S$ t4 _' ]9 S: \36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic
3 r: u ~& `) I; Q# \, m% y1 wrange, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces
+ S3 v' r1 ?$ Z6 l$ Sthe look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a# x; C: B- c S* Z& C% A
D-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as2 ^" f0 X; G/ p. L+ K/ z6 ^
well as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.
# D/ d3 e- e9 K) d+ f6 sAutofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor# U9 Q, \' w' n' l. m
has noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is
; o; g- w1 @+ v0 y$ qeasier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while
2 N$ k- W0 U. O* Ealso feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New
$ c3 v! o3 b3 C7 x4 O' Y. |cameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features
& D8 a, c3 y7 ^) }( ]8 _in such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality: S# g; D/ @: `, S
prints and video.
- @8 n; w7 v) g5 b) sTo me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is
& R! b- f8 L3 _5 Jnot megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models+ T6 X) \3 E9 G7 c5 p% o
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using
+ u7 ~; z* O; A; Mcountless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first5 Q2 {0 q) F: {* R, S4 U$ \
sight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws
6 v5 ]" M( J, ?7 b7 Tlike never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of
8 N- W* a: Y7 W K$ Yacuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I
. D. l( t' F7 _* c& s* }1 pam enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as# u9 L7 e" h1 Q& _$ g) |: O
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse
0 S; J, K, M" x1 {% E8 dphotography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add4 h' l& ]( q$ k! C k/ f
tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the4 }* h8 K' W. F) ]+ w
D800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express, z& ^/ O# f* I& W" i
is that now I will think differently about the images I make.
" ~9 k6 _' i; |9 v* ]& XAs a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,, h. u9 q, P8 c9 k- h: B3 {$ ` G

artistic and client expectations. The Nikon D800 will set new standards for

architectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they

clean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility
