Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression/ s/ H6 U# [2 C7 ~/ z2 C! Y
of the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is' }- c5 f6 _5 S. s: s! I
now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3
! f* _$ a9 x5 c( f$ s- Emegapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution
y- J0 r( Y) T/ b2 h( Bwithin a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color! d! G; N" q$ o
matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance0 \& W& `' l$ N, d" ?
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D8007 G6 A$ k! V& e7 V ^) a6 J5 S9 |
allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject. |3 F C `# f5 u
without having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography0 P* C5 `: k& K4 @5 F- t/ @, J
was traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum; z W& m' R. h, [ W5 u
image quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was5 N4 R& o' s4 O* \- ^
widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and$ j* u3 t8 {3 H+ o$ K9 Q
convenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown
- @ a2 t8 ~1 u _. o$ e+ g6 ubefore, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,
# ~, Q/ f O3 H% q$ dthanks to the D800.
6 V/ H$ t; T* t) y# \When I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,: [4 n E9 B" l) w( G
36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic
$ T7 c% F4 w orange, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces9 D/ ], _9 e, A# o
the look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a
2 n( P7 M4 I. t. P( h3 ]5 J7 ` z" t- CD-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as: [( C/ ~& L) y7 k8 X
well as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.
U5 o" u, O- ZAutofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor
* p7 f4 k& G7 V5 k$ o# r: c; fhas noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is& ^) y& Z1 G4 n
easier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while: G8 N& y/ W$ k# h5 T
also feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New
5 z- y7 {1 f4 Y" Ncameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features
( t- Y+ ~# x( X! X* W1 h/ f) Iin such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality

To me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is
( ^7 Y6 U, W; x4 X" A! `not megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models- x8 n9 C6 M% t* r8 p
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using( @; B) f& z" b: p( b O" {3 F3 h" [
countless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first0 {: h. U F* w' i
sight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws/ m* |- l! h3 `% \4 p% b+ Q- ~
like never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of- [, d0 l. P$ z% t/ D6 F
acuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I- s- l [- W2 X, ^& D
am enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as7 [& I* P, F, e# A
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse8 j9 _0 q `( U# e1 p
photography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add
6 c0 c6 k& t% E6 ntremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the
" z2 u X4 M& z, [8 RD800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express
" [; f* J! h0 o: ~is that now I will think differently about the images I make.8 ?+ u$ F/ e. z8 s! x
As a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,
' H% s' K3 h# \4 l% w8 ~8 ~compact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal
4 F* j& w# x% V8 F" U& E$ N0 rartistic and client expectations. The Nikon D800 will set new standards for

now. Particularly, the live view mode enables extremely precise compositions8 w1 W1 `0 h; I3 x6 J
and easy focusing in dim lighting, which simplifies my workflow. Superior

* y7 A q& N Q) z* L yarchitectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they: l) H/ t# `! k9 Z
perfectly match with the newly invented system and produce breathtakingly% @5 ? ^7 @1 K/ I6 o
clean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility! b! t* r2 | n! }/ }6 }
to work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional% N9 l+ n/ Z8 H( |9 C
range of light. It definitely takes my photographic versatility and image quality% e9 ]4 V. d$ Q( q* E, |% I1 j
to a new level. What a new companion!
