Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression
$ d0 ~' G' X f( r# A8 Wof the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is
+ Y, c7 V1 u; x+ ?2 }: \- c: E/ nnow inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3# d5 ?+ q2 U, {+ s
megapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution2 W y7 w5 \$ X% }- x H+ e
within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color u8 E2 d2 l8 l0 w: J5 B; Q2 ]
matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance- ]( R5 i* k( r7 t
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800# ~* C5 ]/ y3 z- v q, ^. L
allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject/ J9 i l& i. B$ [1 `
without having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography* c/ `" S8 |( j D; S
was traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum1 H7 C( l$ u/ e! K2 v$ H& x1 f
image quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was9 v8 K: \% K- m
widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and2 o x% E3 a" p- B% c2 G# _" O
convenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown
9 }9 d8 M( p" i+ t w$ Kbefore, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,- k; t; O3 X1 J6 n
thanks to the D800.
3 b" l9 _( ]: y1 Q# o$ YWhen I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,: V) |+ B7 Z$ \' ~6 ?: M6 B! w
36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic% t. A; c# e8 D5 J% O; U
range, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces9 ^6 O; \$ i5 v7 X% q1 u' p1 O) `
the look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a, }% l6 J8 N! S) o) j
D-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as: J# s" u; k4 g8 ^2 m
well as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before." Y# s$ Q: Z8 G: W$ P( ]" ?
Autofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor
: s" s7 @. R5 [has noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is
9 e) f6 q7 |% g$ j) Teasier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while0 y X7 A6 R s8 T% w g
also feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New
* a+ f; x' a5 Zcameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features: J8 x3 i- C% N; h/ S
in such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality) y! G. N+ J9 d4 q1 w! W2 {
prints and video.4 t* E A3 X5 _7 L! u
To me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is
' D5 Q5 ^% I0 N1 Cnot megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models0 Y c/ N! |+ \- l1 B& D) r
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using3 }! F; u/ Y0 u$ j5 T$ f! g) M
countless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first: ^1 @( R, f( M _" z8 l1 C2 K4 l
sight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws
+ R, E7 T% f4 _3 g% M jlike never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of
' L3 o& {% V! K0 Xacuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I
' n+ c& ~! a' o1 d/ ^) Aam enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as5 V/ ~9 P7 w3 j! Y% ^; W4 t! Q
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse3 N! O" f3 e9 a, q6 Y+ I9 c4 X9 x
photography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add9 T5 z. G( B0 r) U$ B0 T5 g
tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the- F4 K; G" H. C9 R; Q0 W/ L: Q
D800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express
+ G. O# Y0 f% u H( {; Cis that now I will think differently about the images I make.
' f2 ^3 f ]3 cAs a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,) W- k/ T4 S8 J" ]' o
compact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal

quality lenses such as the PC NIKKOR tilt & shift lineup are indispensable for
" z$ e/ p% a) t+ Iarchitectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they) ~' S' J' r" F9 B* G0 B) e+ f5 f
perfectly match with the newly invented system and produce breathtakingly! I0 b6 p) A, P1 O+ A% j9 z
clean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility
2 r' F% g4 N# Z# P7 }( Z+ Wto work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional3 d2 a& P8 R1 \( `
range of light. It definitely takes my photographic versatility and image quality
