You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,% k& Q& A6 A" S4 ^/ r$ k7 M

4 x, P( r4 N( DI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
8 A: ^( j( q, M; m2 {* V: q9 @5 `+ {1 |% I
His name was Kyle.
& @: H! X& {" r3 c  b* ?* I
" F' l) C2 |& b% X; {It looked like he was carrying all of his
4 t' o7 r5 t( ~4 vBooks.
/ a' ^9 \" S) k3 j
$ r: J$ n" m! x* q# E& w  Z3 p3 f# qI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
4 D; j: V7 B8 J# ]; ]3 C5 z- i. c) C  D; _0 T- t3 u
He must really be a nerd."
; x( _6 z, z: i
5 }% W) t% z/ ]: zI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
; ~- U$ c" J# X# H* C: x5 }, x
! y) `. P* a8 K8 |As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.& ]3 K- P% e2 q; A" B+ v

/ z' |; u4 }" P8 gThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
# Y' l# o/ a" g4 `; g  j0 f
, x6 f. X7 ^3 A1 y* i* l! A7 vHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.( d3 {! a) Q7 c) x& N
/ V, {! D% ]6 r, G
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes1 z7 j4 C( s% R6 s& c$ ^; y* o
/ S/ {# E- N5 c& x3 w3 i
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.* J: d- B* l* N! M7 P
2 y" ]! r$ f6 d+ {* o6 P
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.  T2 V0 d; |. I' c& U
* e- S% H# q% ^* P
They really should get lives." X" t) ^7 H4 u2 [

+ G& }1 S0 |' a, |" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
1 V- [( ?* I( [1 B. |
  X$ y3 a2 K! I: k5 m: L3 iThere was a big smile on his face., A" I. c5 X( \/ o  d% e. N
+ A- c* H8 ~, ?7 E- V1 H
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.  ?0 v" ?3 ^- L( v4 o
  G& Z/ E# q  V' O
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.6 H; S5 A4 ~# [
. G* a! A# Q: v3 i; Z  N
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.8 B! J3 P  w* W7 {$ ^' U. p
# k9 d7 b2 Q: s& Z
He said he had gone to private school before now.5 f0 ?* ^# k- S6 i  H; i
- W' J: `3 M$ |
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.* |3 s0 b5 ~' O8 ]9 \2 s

7 ?3 N1 a7 U: t) l  z/ rWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.# b5 w8 r( i$ \8 Q. M
+ `; R, V' B5 @# f# r7 L) L. a* p
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.& i; |* a, M% v/ W$ b/ M
/ I  V% q9 m& Q7 O2 _+ j
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
" |& O$ ^/ V4 D! C: y8 A: K- _* y5 x. n" c, H& I* _0 |
He said yes.
; r' m5 C; R$ {  D: |5 i  O+ w
8 d  z6 B+ x9 B* F+ d" eWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him./ }4 u) |8 u5 C6 Q( s) G1 m/ d
+ v5 }4 P3 h  {* l0 j. ]. e4 n
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.. T! e) a2 Z. D5 `( {

0 p5 E. @2 q% V5 WI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!" s5 {4 g9 V# [  C  r- @0 d1 r1 ?

$ R2 Z; e" g& o2 _( w" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
0 u5 a" g* y' }$ n% d  }+ D. ^2 D# g/ e: \+ |$ v
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.5 A* Z2 ^* F% X- i4 S' i3 f

( Q% E: x) `3 Z5 O0 R% TWhen we were seniors, we began to think$ L0 I1 f4 {0 N$ `8 K. F
About college.
; z6 Z. c) y' Y4 \* R3 l5 U6 ]+ j2 }. Y+ w/ {
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I6 \8 i9 t1 h! d& F/ \3 C& j) h
Was going to Duke.
* @( @7 T3 h( H; M" i7 a* e* \" Q8 l9 @6 M
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.1 L& L8 ^) Z2 e$ g1 T

/ }' v$ g4 I+ WHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.5 H! o. H5 P$ _8 v! _! I; ?- c/ d2 w
3 f, M  A3 ^- N& Y& @- U9 O8 B3 _+ ^
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.
! T) m, z) V% E2 g* h- o! k' N& _$ Y) O3 K; R# k
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.) k. g1 f/ s$ t9 o3 ~
  B, }2 ~$ [" g
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.& `2 d$ ?1 h1 f6 b7 a
8 O4 G! Q8 ]" M4 e' O8 ]3 f: Z8 a
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
$ _" _# a+ S# [% n, o2 ?& e; L* L0 U0 w4 `9 n% r
Graduation day, I saw Kyle." C5 w$ `2 d- R4 g; q  s
* ^5 [0 z# p) E! T
He looked great.5 f$ c3 T( R6 C. z3 c

% e* n( Q" Z4 [( O. {' T: wHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
$ l1 G& h, f* X( `8 H3 e7 [- Q. c) o  z
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.6 N0 t' ~: B( k7 _8 W7 h4 T" y
8 Q7 l3 u! Z% A  u$ B7 a  Y( @
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
- i, `' d1 o1 k+ @. h0 M8 s' \, b1 T5 ?3 L% V% P
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.! C. b+ S- I& R, B/ W/ X" K" @( k1 |

8 c1 }3 `" ^4 f  h  ~Today was one of those days.$ u+ v& q/ K% c5 z$ q+ v

. f1 e& y! y$ @6 D) g% S7 [2 cI could see that he was nervous about his speech.( @$ `5 c, ~2 C5 M$ N/ P. b" j
% ?! B; {+ ~% z" `
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
8 x, E+ D( ^! L' I# A$ r
1 \$ q" a7 A3 o6 B, ]1 SHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.3 J+ B2 v" K4 |! v9 k  V9 k% {

% [" [$ r* q/ f' F# U  h5 w"Thanks," he said.
0 Q* B# v1 D) W% w
! W: V0 n0 K8 _% \! G8 w  N# p1 WAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
- B+ p  D" t4 j& `8 O8 E* E
- N; }6 V5 t) y% L: Q+ I"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
2 T1 P0 c/ {" _/ v% }0 x
9 k6 k' o( I4 r1 q/ CYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
1 @6 ]4 N% |' X$ c0 I
2 l5 N. a; m! j' ^; J. w- K$ ]I am here to tell all of you that being a
$ g$ N, p  }9 ~4 \Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
" i3 b- M4 p+ s! ^8 |! @
: B7 Q5 q0 h& C( [6 }I am going to tell you a story."+ r/ g5 i7 A* J
& b( }4 c! E$ p& x  q- ^) l
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
% s9 Q$ E/ U  ^, `! C3 N! Z
6 b! N  j9 z$ MHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
+ [2 j- o- j* U. H3 i2 M/ b  \# Z2 N( m$ x/ ?
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.2 ~% R* U6 S2 _+ G0 A- \' u3 d. s/ @

2 Q. }! g( ]9 ]He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
$ H1 r6 |/ g4 Y
, M* t, W. T" c0 @"Thankfully, I was saved.) l+ Y/ j, Q3 L
+ y4 D& b9 C' n! [. ]$ a1 Y
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."6 O9 t2 Q& c, d; q5 ^# j' `
* Q, B# x. |5 ?. a" W
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
* S/ Q5 @/ U/ X9 {$ l6 M9 C
: y0 _, V. C3 H! DI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.* g# I1 [7 P9 }: v/ f

) ]8 `8 Q" M7 ENot until that moment did I realize it's depth.
. |7 b+ w, i/ l* G* `0 y: |* f, r
' j4 O* Y3 D5 v9 {; c9 ]Never underestimate the power of your actions.
) }4 b0 p. s3 _; X5 r) G# Q$ }+ D0 b: H3 ^/ ?% p1 Z# {) T
With one small gesture you can change a person's life.
5 S  r  |6 Q8 V- _) [7 M5 I
. a7 O" J6 M+ U; b0 ^For better or for worse.
# b+ [1 m: v% X! n! _( y1 L6 ], U, G5 x9 P( Q- Q# e% j# P
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
/ M8 [  v) u, G1 a* j# c2 L! b5 }1 W: |
Look for God in others.
% i5 p" F6 R$ E9 C3 V+ V. O2 J; J1 h. O! }; m1 b
You now have two choices, you can:
  Y1 Z+ ~7 l* t9 ~7 C
: ^- l5 q+ A- P8 n) H, B5 t5 {1) Pass this on to your friends or
6 c# W' b8 W2 i# I; b# U. d1 y; q1 x
- x; G2 @: p/ y+ D5 w2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.
4 _3 @. M/ j+ x- ^$ b: b/ u+ l  V- ?3 ~/ N6 A2 T* ]
As you can see, I took choice number 1.+ m+ \5 N9 ]: P# a; x+ Y. g" w* Y' v
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."( I' y) Z, l3 Y/ ?. J, i7 F- m

7 x/ h' u5 U/ _% ^7 r" WThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.
# l7 Y; o+ {3 X- m9 Z& N1 b( w% W
7 B8 o2 e4 f* ^8 U) `; g% @2 VTomorrow is mystery.
, y  `2 l5 U, |  s5 y6 L& s$ g" A+ B3 m( s4 U; F6 [
Today is a gift.6 G8 C" `0 `. z/ [7 q
0 q0 |: d& ^: F: E1 x, F

If it comes back to you, then you'll know you have a circle of friends.
