One day, when I was a freshman in high school,

It looked like he was carrying all of his9 R4 p& {, Y8 [# y' d3 E9 b
Books.

( _0 B: q: y" K+ t- s/ fI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?

He must really be a nerd."1 N, d/ J/ S, S& K

I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.5 \/ J, D! z z* i& ], m/ I- s9 a
" k$ p. A; Y* Z. n. f
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. v# k8 _. f; Y- b% A1 R5 L9 L1 ~& B
7 p- X( W" A' t1 n+ LThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.4 {1 M1 R. N9 T+ [
6 N( f3 y5 u1 Q" e+ f1 x( r
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.2 d* m! f( O7 I5 \- V0 E
, {+ E4 n$ i$ m9 }0 Y
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
, U$ O& }+ I7 P ]1 C2 ^8 M" O2 j: e. ^: h) U
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.+ ^( H' U1 u) {# m; h# u$ H Z
' H+ B7 U' Y7 N' f% Y
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
( D$ q( ]( ^8 I2 I' X) ?' _6 Z) D. A: P$ w2 S& t
They really should get lives.
f: S& W! d4 `* j, J* v9 v& b% r+ E l2 J
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
# E/ ]+ K" X/ `/ P( F' [
& j# W2 {% e/ Z8 hThere was a big smile on his face.
; J' I5 r; W% d8 W" n5 ], I& y$ F( U7 j
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.

, w3 ]4 q F' X( Y" V# t; BI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.

As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.

$ z* k- D! v0 @4 C$ q, B3 ]' T8 LHe said he had gone to private school before now.

* F1 \! m ~ L7 z5 yI would have never hung out with a private school kid before.) b% o: f5 ?" f( }9 I- Y. I5 g* J( P

We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books. Z7 d" j* t2 [1 c# q. N$ R

He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.; K1 y" e8 f0 K0 y" k# }% o6 }

I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.( ~! X. Y* W8 I) ?' \' m
7 H6 j: X# H, z& ]He said yes.

# W2 ^" F+ d/ T) A) AWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.: }: [2 {, A# k# E- [

Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again. J( N1 @% ~) d% n
! m# e& i( H/ y6 r' i+ r8 c
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!

$ t: z3 h8 }' F9 T) Y- p0 \- @1 P" He just laughed and handed me half the books.

Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.; p- M+ k& k& S( U$ t5 e
4 `" m' ], E( R. m4 {. ]& L3 QWhen we were seniors, we began to think

Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I

. ~) B6 G X3 N3 P1 L3 BI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.

. @9 C9 ]2 Y* s+ H& W5 E& |. eHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.; X, k" H, G G! q( G
t4 F( I8 m, |( k: PKyle was valedictorian of our class.
& }% m4 I4 r( {% Y$ O; D+ r# K2 h/ o/ L8 x1 j
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.: H/ X) f9 {3 L' Q! C& e8 |1 q

He had to prepare a speech for graduation.

I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak) {* X2 q" I7 i6 X
7 H/ I" X/ P7 O/ E0 F" ?Graduation day, I saw Kyle.

4 J8 b% j3 s' k3 vHe looked great.

He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.

& L/ C6 S: M1 q' F" \He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.

# e* c+ Z% y- T; \3 dHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him." V+ L+ G! l' e

Today was one of those days.

I could see that he was nervous about his speech.

So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"7 B+ w' `9 a- Q4 A6 q, Q1 n3 P$ U

He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled." O9 O7 Z# y7 o% r; s" `
( j5 o% t( K* M"Thanks," he said.

+ V/ E) d( i' c& @/ \% S* aAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began& h2 h# Q) J* Z8 F6 B

"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.

I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.

# ~8 v! \: Q8 V8 @He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.

: H' p: L( ^& l' DHe looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.

"Thankfully, I was saved., ]. @3 v8 z( w" v
! `/ ?& w2 j: X- {7 v+ s8 i: W `My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."

I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.% h# ~0 [! u) [
0 U# L8 r" ~/ i# W) OI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.* i6 Q5 y" p/ k2 X5 ^

Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.$ q! P2 B6 G1 ~

Never underestimate the power of your actions. p; W# I, a/ u
