You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
. U& o) e* G2 J7 ]) F
# H/ P3 Y% i5 O3 r9 {- L- hI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
& [# J5 P, R% a7 b5 q
  k8 G) [: f3 J, e0 ?+ X  V* A; @His name was Kyle.
0 D. ~" \" P( a6 s, [) u* Q& _( q* l9 e- Y( y
It looked like he was carrying all of his
7 c' x0 H8 \( j% l+ N4 ~Books.
" ~) ?5 D- {' r5 B3 T' I
6 H! w  _( S# ^9 J& mI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
& ]0 f# x5 O# S' k
4 u1 |+ A4 D& XHe must really be a nerd."9 l# h3 S3 G/ X1 m6 f

5 K/ u. |, O& y, M7 ZI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.1 R( ]3 l+ R9 W, \- a9 z

$ \0 T$ Y. d  d. O6 L  M3 pAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.1 q2 `6 P+ R. R8 Z
9 H1 v% |8 [6 g. V: e4 e
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.1 G, B/ b1 ?- d2 D5 q. l8 G. K

4 A) J! X& C  lHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.% a7 d" U+ F+ Z* e% y( \
, `8 r. t. \& s4 N" d# g/ j' Z% _
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes3 m5 S7 _+ X" e- M0 v- i
& N: A& F! k7 ]6 W) B. O# E( I
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.# Y  ]! p- @* \) z

  V2 O! ^$ G' u2 I, d# LAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
2 M0 M6 m7 z0 A2 j* M! N' |' c0 O% N% k- A/ x
They really should get lives.
' Q% r( ?9 s5 y" e
  d9 ]! ?6 @4 P& Q1 `, t" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
4 V5 f: u; V% ]/ |9 P- F7 g/ C0 B0 H) P
There was a big smile on his face.
) Y! D7 t& `1 I- C- ~* p, u1 }3 K* i) l
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
$ o  P& Q0 G6 r. ?/ d9 P0 w7 g1 c, ~, L. r$ s% s
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
% H2 a3 m# w3 ^% T$ r, W
2 T9 d8 q! X# f8 ?. iAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.' b( Z: f: o& |

; O' z8 s$ d4 ~/ j. W$ aHe said he had gone to private school before now.
1 f  B0 Q( V0 T9 `. ]; c, ~. V+ M/ ]! `. Y" K
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
& R# X+ n+ ~1 U* R$ {6 B' s/ V9 p$ c# `  g) v: y
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.3 U. e. D2 i3 A  E/ ]" V
5 s( n7 \' X* M' k* x7 Z; b2 Z$ Y
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
+ p! t! x: L8 B6 w. l1 D- a% y- B3 q# ?7 `% O
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
" h3 @* _& ]: y7 @
- e9 K: l: Y" dHe said yes.
) ]% x) m$ }; x) E
  o% q! y" y' \5 E6 p3 Y0 _- g# mWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.6 j/ N4 N3 h4 Z

. J9 F& ^! k) R: |Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.  h6 F2 _  T! L2 c+ S

5 w7 S0 }4 o( p5 |9 \# I' P0 l' @I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
' [; a& |& f/ P9 o
2 }& ~& v# C3 ]- P4 O1 t, x" He just laughed and handed me half the books.- d, B6 }7 [* C2 P4 a; S

5 \: F5 b5 m* N$ {8 _Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.  }6 l- O$ Y, ]) X$ z

! _$ u3 ~( C' i. yWhen we were seniors, we began to think
  {5 u' S9 W+ WAbout college.$ C7 b4 c  h- ?  r- M) y, \4 s
% S4 n) R9 N2 e3 ^4 z: R9 @
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I
9 q: {: R* ^" t8 @1 h  h7 oWas going to Duke.
% V* D- D* N7 `, a4 e# w
  y1 e) \5 s3 h9 mI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.) V3 e+ O, k% N' i

+ ]; v% ^. o9 g" K, X  [0 ]He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.- x: T  l# z" d4 M2 E8 H6 z$ Z/ V& b

5 j" L  F  J" l( U! o3 y+ RKyle was valedictorian of our class.& V. p- q  a0 o& |

; ?8 D. y8 _4 B: y% E, WI teased him all the time about being a nerd., q" Z' N# }4 W) t0 m! L0 G$ ^

  N( z$ D9 G4 u2 i5 @. P: k9 m* E6 IHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.5 Z+ j1 @, t  n0 g# n: q6 e: F: x/ N
# K9 z4 |# M: L8 @1 F7 r$ B, Y/ S( H
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak+ r# \' X' a  k" i$ O. z8 f% Q

0 b$ h- B. L) f6 z0 G: t+ d7 W3 W' IGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
: A2 N. g$ n& s, N* m; P# H
4 n( j8 c# D2 Q/ X& N3 P2 ZHe looked great.& g  I9 M) Q" y7 S1 _

% B' {/ J+ p) GHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
9 J; k2 E! T6 T$ g! `: V) a, n# i) r; y. N+ y) L  N
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.( Y% o1 u8 u# f* U# G! e2 k
8 m; o, v9 |* b" ~
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
- s2 W( M1 t5 ~- B1 v1 v1 t7 ~/ s% {, [( f2 V& A7 O8 e7 z
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
; L( [# n" `$ s7 n! }% O. q4 v$ P$ n: Y5 d3 f
Today was one of those days.& e" z; J, B# J8 n  o4 {
+ B( S* u# t7 ~! P6 }& `8 Y0 N
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.5 e* b. o8 ]7 {2 k9 C6 h; Q
  s% d& W; W+ l8 A/ t
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
5 B, g7 d- p1 W' ?3 h( Y0 Y' I8 m- `, T( C7 l$ ^/ ^
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.) Y$ o4 d7 E3 \$ n6 k
, I+ c! B( j% g# d) ]
"Thanks," he said.
% N: M0 }3 w) U+ y) ^; n) T! r) G# R/ |) j9 ]) y
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began* T; s/ u/ y  L% a# F/ Q

6 W, A* `( s8 V9 |! z0 O8 V"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
6 }" y; L; h/ \0 x! H! E) `9 G: N5 X. B! [# J; u" J
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...; |+ I& ]+ j" X0 p

* W* a9 T) y/ uI am here to tell all of you that being a
: U; D8 [# c0 zFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them." X# g: k, s  ], G; ^- A  n# m

0 b5 F/ [9 n7 t& I& @  iI am going to tell you a story."
' p7 J& P" O! t- p9 V  o8 v, n' K! @$ @) l% F
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.% V$ V; f( g6 l

' j0 j" ^6 K( G5 iHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.0 k2 @& ^6 \# q' X: ~6 y7 {5 P# u

& N# u4 I- Y, H1 F& ^8 i- p7 HHe talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home./ b, ]1 R% L8 Y5 r3 B" n! r) U$ v( h
  P& e0 h3 Z$ w4 X; k5 L" t
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
5 ^# B& f4 {2 |% ~- L9 t8 A/ L/ T: _) l
8 P! I+ I. U. f7 |"Thankfully, I was saved.
2 r9 ?. e6 ?, {9 J' L% Z9 C! R( ^! c! }" ]0 ^2 \! r* E
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."0 W) j  M. E- P. h; s) W0 @3 ^

/ V9 D1 U% N7 W5 ZI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
# `1 p8 E' v# f' N* J  {, u, u
) v5 q7 @2 y8 a9 L' u! UI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
/ b9 D9 ]/ p) y! o+ C: |" |5 C0 _% ]7 T+ B4 h! \5 c' z" ?& {% P
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.; F) h% {7 U1 x' W1 W8 I

. J7 K1 U) _6 I+ yNever underestimate the power of your actions.  ^% @* ~; B7 [  b& J

, @- g  }4 F; S3 NWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.
' r4 a  O7 c; ~4 y! p5 _1 M$ [
" F2 P$ K6 h/ Y0 |) sFor better or for worse.
' ?" S2 d2 ?7 f5 L1 a0 G4 z) P7 p2 c  q7 K" a* l0 W: Y
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
+ O- e5 `3 i* J5 X, ]
% r! F- {5 Y4 y1 ^) eLook for God in others.
8 a- _7 |/ m. H* n. s7 ?2 Q$ p8 T/ P: C3 D# f& V" ^
You now have two choices, you can:
: h$ W0 K& b0 W" `, @$ E' \3 @1 d( M# I) N. }- R
1) Pass this on to your friends or
( s2 R4 a3 f) `3 Q
& [" p, Z9 @$ T7 a2 ?: g2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.
5 C9 ^: A: `7 C* P# s9 h6 k: J6 m' ^+ S
As you can see, I took choice number 1.9 g/ ?# ~! k8 Z
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."$ k) {3 L1 h% D+ t8 e; X
+ T5 {$ t  L) f' i5 U
There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.: }5 r. `% I0 P4 B$ L6 f. c# w
# L8 T2 Q. T7 y: S
Tomorrow is mystery., f0 p5 S) l9 d1 ^+ [) H! F# ?$ j
8 {* W4 r8 J# u7 ]( _- O
Today is a gift./ O7 }& E( B; Y( x: `, J  D# S
$ p/ z; C7 F3 z4 f& f
