Proposed by the not-for-profit Jasper Place Health and Wellness Centre, the $12.1-million project was to provide subsidies and supports for formerly homeless people. A memorandum of understanding had been signed to build the 60-unit structure on vacant land beside Holy Trinity Riverbend Anglican Church at 1428 156th St. But the project faced strong opposition from some who live in the southwest Edmonton neighbourhood who feared safety issues and lower property values.5 G+ r: P; e2 B4 C

But Anglican Bishop Jane Alexander told CBC Radio on Tuesday that she was "surprised and horrified" by community reaction to the project, but says the church will start over again on the same block of land.

"We don't think it's the right project at the right time," Alexander said. "We're committed to doing something on that land which will help us to commit to our responsibility in the 10-year plan to end homelessness but we don't think this is the right project."& y7 E" H8 l" `% X( U7 b6 j! f
/ @0 A) l* V9 q5 B: f0 R, r7 YShe also said the consultation process was flawed — including instances of bullying — so neighbourhood residents would never accept the project in its current form.

In September, members of the Terwillegar Towne Homeowners Association agreed to devote up to $35,000 in legal fees to fight the project. A public meeting held in August drew nearly 800 residents, with most speakers voicing disapproval.! k" H1 L2 [4 K8 c# c. ]
