Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
4 U5 s8 U; c3 E: z5 V/ g: `not do any of the following:$ M9 V) F- Q* j2 s
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
& X2 m: I2 i& W# b+ ?0 S+ d$ e( W, L0 {vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
& U6 \0 a9 C- P% y, q6 C(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
3 Y- i1 o. k7 T3 E* z7 Jvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
N1 ]( J! [' h! u6 P/ K( u. Y(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
5 ?4 j3 d5 H( o# Z7 C/ O% E3 d/ ppermit another person
7 W; C$ v( Y* r: P: B0 }: U(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or& A3 I" A C2 S( a
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,# `8 {6 C. H% D2 `
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
8 k( D4 H& L5 E- p8 A8 R1 c(d) give or lend a financial! h( ~" k$ A! ]' L3 C
responsibility card or a copy of it1 h, {* g* v2 Q7 O( B0 k
to a person not entitled to have that financial* j5 J) I" x' P. B/ f
responsibility card or copy.
4 @) S. W' H* ^' t# h(1.1)) T" ^; l7 U# k/ I5 D+ f/ i
If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
+ m- \) U% K2 c4 J( ~# Gwithout the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of0 G% H3 `2 l: [3 s4 @' e, x
the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection( [. v w) h) L; a
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is. l- K( q- P& ^; l1 E; I) t
not an insured motor vehicle.

- R2 S7 d: [( VIf the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
1 X- Y/ N1 W1 `: }# ^Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this
5 N. x# G6 R, c2 ] c+ O" L1 M' Ksection. o, F* ^! f0 _! F: ?, L j
(3) ?2 w! ^+ V+ V6 `4 I
Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a1 f+ f+ u: H3 t. n. Z/ g6 m6 w
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
4 L) K0 K: C" ~- BInsurance Act/ G/ E& N, i, H$ n k
by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy! p4 Y$ P( t" U) e2 `+ g
outside Alberta.: Q! f- g, Z3 c2 N, R) i
(4)& L3 o( a, h8 R K6 `0 Q8 `
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
3 L7 x# r7 f2 H# r' \" q(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
5 ]; k. Q7 @$ S6 a- [(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
! m" Q; x' X2 i/ Hand not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
- `) ^* j/ x3 K+ K- R/ y7 V8 _, J5 Timprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
* I9 L( m' H; z7 ] rmore than 6 months
- M2 p" h& J1 t9 v, [& wMinimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
