Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
- c" \9 R6 u# snot do any of the following:
4 T# y4 L# @" _ p" G4 {, a(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
, b9 y0 H& {. _7 Zvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
" ]7 X6 d2 {8 W- `4 D% x(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor& L }) ]' Q+ z. J( k
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
7 ]. O% d1 n* o% S% U+ [; ?* A7 K(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
# @2 @& ~6 R4 R, ~permit another person1 ]* w$ k$ B* I: s) s
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
( i, j2 k; f; S" r6 K(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
d0 e; z5 P! F& Funless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
! k6 c1 a" K* { b4 W7 T( M(d) give or lend a financial5 a. e% p" Q8 w7 n5 p2 {
responsibility card or a copy of it
& v' V; ]6 a2 t( Mto a person not entitled to have that financial
, a: Q# M9 h+ A+ Y. X: iresponsibility card or copy.# a: Z4 l3 Q; D8 H+ ]

If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway9 \8 u* J! O' R& Q/ L& i; f
without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
1 ?; w" U1 o$ A( V) j! B9 r+ {3 vthe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection, C3 U& N) j' O# h
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is
( y# {1 |. S& Bnot an insured motor vehicle.

# H& C" e, p2 j. Y3 ?; Z) TIf the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this. m% L. U3 t+ n6 N! |% x

Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a. w2 B- Z! `4 D$ P( J P) ]+ }7 l
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
# c! x& L1 w' ]3 RInsurance Act
0 O$ s6 X! U+ W; E- p+ U, @5 u/ Xby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy6 I$ n7 |5 d i
outside Alberta.

- i8 ?/ H# R! D* NA person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection; W6 Z: F# X: C; Z; E$ U
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,3 `4 S U- n \! w* a
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
3 Y) z' y- [4 s) K0 _and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
5 M; K9 d2 S# R1 |9 v$ nimprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
' d j: B; {5 |3 Omore than 6 months

0 a. }3 D3 n5 T2 |Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
