Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall! D9 `- H( I% b% T7 C! p% f" d
not do any of the following:$ i3 X4 ]$ V/ x" a z' [8 j
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor6 V/ D6 M) V1 t8 R# n8 _, @+ @6 f
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
, z# g; w* x7 u# ~. X3 a(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
m# z1 e/ ]3 @1 _) d4 Avehicle is an insured motor vehicle;+ I# |& }. N# @0 ]
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
0 |/ R$ `* ^# v- A/ spermit another person
; f! v* W5 E+ V+ C3 k1 N(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
$ M% n1 |1 `$ b" S* Q& @/ H+ B(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
9 p5 {4 ^. v; {9 Junless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
. R8 i' ]7 U( k! |(d) give or lend a financial- d A5 l0 F& c# |5 h8 ^6 c
responsibility card or a copy of it" e( T9 C( k7 w$ {1 k# |
to a person not entitled to have that financial
" H2 }4 C6 J+ }responsibility card or copy.

; @5 p2 N" S; _$ [% g4 o# P9 d" J7 e5 UIf a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway3 d8 W9 n) i2 V9 L& G4 ]* i
without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of" }& S) D8 r+ J% b: H( `
the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection7 ]; H1 w: U( n/ [. `+ W+ e7 h
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is

(2)/ y' F9 i* b- X: A/ v x2 Q3 r
If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this3 \, F/ [8 q! C2 k- w$ f% w) U" j
Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this
4 F; q! k! o) N& U+ V* ^; ?section.

Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a- t) ~; d( V+ e- M. Y
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the4 x- f" t! G5 F3 x8 q, _; [
Insurance Act
0 m z; w' T! h+ E" ~0 K/ C+ U3 ^/ ^by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy4 U3 n6 n+ q3 i8 v' d; O' i
outside Alberta.
% ^/ _8 B( z P(4)
4 H$ `/ m! Y; u$ g, T( |A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection4 o! J4 T, w6 j
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
/ f8 o( c5 D! p% y(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $25003 v8 e5 I3 c1 x: Z% x
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
+ E- ~2 |9 [' G% l2 b# ]imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
5 |+ L0 w3 T. u8 j" k! F" N ^$ Hmore than 6 months
* C3 n+ K/ K4 n7 x0 x2 G; E2 ^! gMinimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
