Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
8 Y/ U( z7 V1 b/ H( O8 M$ [9 {9 Vnot do any of the following:
9 c; V, v/ s8 T3 T! K(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor7 r ]9 E) m& a+ K; ]
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;5 h6 A$ o) I7 _" z
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor! F; p8 @& e" n1 v0 t- Q
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;$ k5 z; N! s) x/ I1 e: ]
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,6 t( F. h9 o6 L) X$ I
permit another person
" b9 o& G5 Y; `+ J" s(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or8 X8 o3 G: }- D3 O* m1 v% \
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,: c4 C; ~" M0 M( @! P/ k$ N
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;+ Z2 E* ?) q9 t% l) G/ D2 r
(d) give or lend a financial
- r" ]( [+ x# J- tresponsibility card or a copy of it
, g& l7 r) Q, B- o6 ` ~" f9 Jto a person not entitled to have that financial

+ `% s9 J; E% ?* y3 d& ~If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
' x5 r! P" c I/ W1 W7 {without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
4 h$ d+ b4 m$ d/ |the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection2 J$ I) y: ~2 A% F' `
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is/ {" r( [% V( i
not an insured motor vehicle.

If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
9 r4 S, [0 d3 C4 G- G9 H% @5 F: RAct, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this

' h" e9 b }2 e2 S4 BSubsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a
+ S/ o; B0 z3 k* F1 { ~6 bfinancial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the) p* Z. l' P7 j0 s
Insurance Act
5 s$ }& U( P) h5 J( gby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
; w, E8 s6 z/ @outside Alberta.% h7 g2 _$ C7 {6 D* r
(4)% r7 ]. m& W2 A/ W$ {
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
H/ y1 g7 E0 A( s(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,2 x" U% h- H/ ?% l8 _0 x
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
( R6 f8 ^: ?3 gand not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
$ P6 I0 o8 z5 A* m. _3 vimprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not/ U) L5 s6 v' \7 V
more than 6 months

Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
