Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
1 t: T* @6 k* x$ c+ vnot do any of the following:: U0 x" i, s! M: b' Q- e, T
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
6 ~+ V2 L9 X; i [$ B5 y1 jvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
# G6 @% r. F& B# ~3 }. J0 b4 @(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor3 Q4 e, P& Z7 g
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;) R7 c" ]1 T% F* _* Q( I7 |
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,- T4 ~& _1 f) _# x/ _- S+ j
permit another person
' M! p$ r0 p4 \- F4 ?) F9 O) u/ k6 v(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
( E4 W9 B) B {, H: \/ B" K6 I(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway, t$ v, _' J4 a' a/ ?0 T" l
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle; I' E. e+ p) l8 N
(d) give or lend a financial: Z" x* N% N$ T; U
responsibility card or a copy of it" B* `1 D2 F- b" e9 S8 n& H5 Z
to a person not entitled to have that financial

If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway# _5 P8 J1 N- r% {& m9 o8 w( ^$ Z+ `
without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
, L9 N: M5 |' }$ U5 _the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection1 S# F. K6 ?0 H F* a, ^1 g6 L" b
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is1 t6 L8 L/ u) `$ m5 L/ _
not an insured motor vehicle.7 k6 w s/ c* V4 P/ H% G4 U
(2)* F% @3 h4 J1 ]; }6 T1 I0 T
If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this5 T4 [" B: a" H& M
Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this o7 E. b7 S3 [. M- q- o# p$ w$ {
section.

Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a
9 c* Q/ R& ?) N' |' g% xfinancial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the/ h* k7 ^0 {9 H$ S$ y
Insurance Act1 C- c2 E# B! x# m% Q
by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy# S4 e9 ]8 u, e, k
outside Alberta.
' |/ @ k! q+ z9 _3 q(4)
" J2 e. \2 F% Y& Q/ x" lA person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
2 ^' P( c" f, h- o- v(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
/ t/ L( u% F' }, t(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $25006 [# R6 e: i/ a6 R, M
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
. j. D$ y) `1 X, d2 bimprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
. { B* L& w$ H* }, e: q; ymore than 6 months

4 x- \+ z2 X/ lMinimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
