Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
9 `0 M+ H* N/ {. v* `9 n5 k; Dnot do any of the following:. {4 j( g# S& D1 U Y0 F
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor# Z$ J% f& C0 M
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;& N5 q: i# e7 J3 h
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
6 w. k. n2 h. M tvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
" V' f2 S6 I8 q: {8 C5 C( b0 P(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
% }9 o$ s4 c( o# t% l: w' a; p4 npermit another person
7 X7 s `/ B/ u+ P(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
: H) ?9 J' Q$ v0 E `* U4 V(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,4 u2 n/ t" i _5 }1 v# V& }
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;$ p/ i3 U1 u6 d) h* I+ x
(d) give or lend a financial
8 ]) N! w" O5 Qresponsibility card or a copy of it
# l( k2 A2 x0 l) h/ z9 E3 C1 }to a person not entitled to have that financial
; u h7 ~, x0 R+ d9 P8 f! Qresponsibility card or copy.+ }5 {3 w, H% N0 L4 E

If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway- v5 I: U- ] _, N. N( |
without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of2 z' ~3 f4 r/ {9 p" F1 ^
the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection7 u6 L5 |8 x! y+ w9 {
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is6 I" M9 Y1 o4 z8 r4 J
not an insured motor vehicle.

If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
! F1 Z( x% A! SAct, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this- v4 v$ g; @5 e: x$ g

Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a8 b5 I: T- U1 q' n% f4 [ D
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the: k ]) B5 A! V& J; |
Insurance Act
- n0 e1 N1 C2 {' @by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
# r+ B( w N' T6 f# o4 Koutside Alberta.7 d. k1 h, T& K' _: D2 ^+ v
(4). _* }6 L/ q" W' f: h: b
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
$ n9 `8 `5 D/ m: V$ u; ]. B(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,6 Q, Y- \/ F+ T3 V# s; C
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $25007 C5 _, e( Y0 T: d" F+ w
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to9 ]- o6 M' J1 }8 ]6 D
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
. ]: u& ^- j1 H5 smore than 6 months
! r& [% H& o1 f" A4 r: h
Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
