Insurance required

' J* ^9 _2 w3 F M& K# mExcept as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall0 a: ~$ S2 R' k9 D- N
not do any of the following:
" M8 \: a+ a4 m4 Y! s! \8 e7 l(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor. |6 K, Z/ D: i1 V; z
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;8 {9 c+ ^9 s* I7 t
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
$ p) I0 [- @& v1 V% xvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
; L6 ^+ f" l9 A, `(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
; f. Y$ [5 z' e$ Z: P' c9 lpermit another person2 A) Q! E/ v! U1 T# X/ z, y* a
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or' J1 [5 n6 b, ^. X6 }
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
. Z, a- K2 l0 U3 {8 G [1 ~; Aunless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
5 u3 n1 S2 d" R+ k; [(d) give or lend a financial- T# J8 E! Q- g `) T4 P# f
responsibility card or a copy of it& j/ j& m* Y# M* V2 G
to a person not entitled to have that financial
A6 f0 M: _! V# a* S% I% _; Gresponsibility card or copy.$ P% B$ w [1 C9 M3 t
(1.1)" f3 u% B' s& q" c
If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway* n! ]2 x9 C" _; k1 P: F/ f4 r& {
without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
6 t; f' {. K, P8 bthe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
/ n' u4 E7 T: Z; J: D(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is# e I2 J6 l, {2 \" u+ j
not an insured motor vehicle. n6 O2 H5 y- j8 J3 p# f

If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this' \: i$ k0 ]8 B5 t: W
Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this

7 \" {& i- `/ B4 @& z( M) Z9 f# USubsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a& o, T5 f. R% v: n6 k1 u& U" s
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
/ a7 _6 [. j sInsurance Act
: a1 R) [1 r3 U" h% ]7 [by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy2 G I+ R$ T$ u' Q( ~2 P% x
outside Alberta.

* m" b1 f, S/ _6 T; N' Q. ]& Y$ _- iA person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
: b1 r4 N6 T0 L" z2 Z5 S+ G(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
9 d9 U5 i% k; i; h; c- [! L(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500, m; a4 }- v: o' L
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
3 _3 X4 R7 o5 r7 |7 n$ ximprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
( F7 K0 A. z% E3 R" m Omore than 6 months
7 {5 Y9 M! O; m, S( v8 s2 |; b3 x* K1 U1 L- M
Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
