Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall# N6 p* Q( N% a" d4 K
not do any of the following:- V& e1 {% m1 H; [8 u. }
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
3 z6 }' I& d% v% @. G0 N2 e% cvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
# l# X, }3 i' b( ?# G8 Q(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
" P4 u( ~/ k# Tvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
1 N, D" E( t7 L/ v(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,7 [& k1 J6 a# q' l1 Y, Q
permit another person
8 c3 \( R; E) v7 o2 L# m$ q: Q(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or& M5 k% A9 O, U8 o
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,! n m: P6 Z3 f
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
/ v N8 c. g0 j. d(d) give or lend a financial
( |& @6 _+ K, V; v5 q1 `6 z0 Dresponsibility card or a copy of it
/ @8 d1 f# V4 P1 Cto a person not entitled to have that financial6 l$ }3 i7 [3 ^! n* L; a7 M, o, p
responsibility card or copy.
3 i6 a; m7 U) v(1.1) @0 L& h; {2 @# X) O. u Q
If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
' @# m; n5 s+ jwithout the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
: h6 A. @+ c* Q! ^+ pthe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
' K) U; s5 Q' d# g8 _(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is
/ n2 U6 b4 X. Q+ w# |4 Snot an insured motor vehicle., r; Z4 e9 ]% Z
(2)' f$ D) Y( H) r+ z5 D8 A
If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this( \4 _) T6 [. K+ C
Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this

# z2 b7 S- Q) LSubsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a
' Z, f3 T' W! n. _0 afinancial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the3 G1 e& @+ W( X' @. e0 }- A
Insurance Act
1 K+ S& r( `2 m0 A2 e4 \by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy8 n7 Y- x! y1 O3 x
outside Alberta.* T' r$ h q% U3 w, i- ^
(4)4 d3 h9 u( u) E% l
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection! G0 h7 o9 w: |4 J O. u
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,0 s o5 k4 ^; H, ]
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
! ^& }8 a1 y7 U8 Y5 `1 \and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to2 c2 x6 i# n& i; o% b& ?: C: [
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not- B4 I( x3 K6 q& e) l% o
more than 6 months

Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
