Insurance required

(1)
- w7 [. R* C. XExcept as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall( h: X) d; [- Q: V; [! @) x" u
not do any of the following:* y& K7 d! J% C' C8 N
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor6 } c" X( `7 X
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
4 m2 N3 ~1 u' w& T1 G% p, n, v S(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
8 p# s/ F) @0 R' R' y+ ~vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;+ A% L& P3 _# l
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle, o3 B# {, G5 E" K5 k
permit another person. i" y( ~8 K9 W8 E% ]- `$ x% H" c
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
! R+ n1 w% E1 T& ~' T0 F(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
6 z% Y5 j2 G7 zunless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;, R* s) O: x# m5 c2 J
(d) give or lend a financial8 c3 h6 J+ k* ?# p
responsibility card or a copy of it
8 T3 h" J$ L: M0 _* xto a person not entitled to have that financial% Y+ V) W" O$ \% U2 Q8 @+ n* ]
responsibility card or copy.

If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
- a4 n* C% d+ m! v- r6 |without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
: I s& v! J C( r4 C" Nthe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection4 u% e' P0 @$ O" f w
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is2 E. i4 r) ?9 T1 e+ u
not an insured motor vehicle.
2 J8 I4 n; Z2 b5 k2 Y1 X(2), f! T) ?1 a( S, ?5 h% W4 K" f! u* L
If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
2 R& {% o( w- ?* k3 V1 M d" n: TAct, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this# G4 I& x2 v- M0 D4 k
section.

8 f* m* S' _8 I) y' e1 a6 USubsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a
3 L- V3 `$ o1 G5 T! d J* t. g5 Ifinancial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the/ t" }/ ~ z" a4 [' m; J
Insurance Act
: r9 }6 H& I/ b, ?% l" f' cby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy( e. ~* b9 I7 |' Y
outside Alberta.
! e! B" w" K) H j3 F- {(4)# l5 f( V0 Y* [6 V
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
- O" J9 ?0 S9 v* i% o/ @+ Q3 F; K(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,4 n0 h; S1 e" z, g8 R& p
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $25000 s' I0 T6 d/ S9 z F% P
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to+ s- v/ W1 i# n0 s, J7 H9 T
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
2 v( b# T) ^! p) Z x& ^more than 6 months
$ f' {) w6 b/ I% m5 K% w! [Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
