Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall; P6 |! r }$ r) q
not do any of the following:* N7 {; E) S+ y0 [5 n; D% v' ^( U
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
6 Q/ O* g i3 gvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;' y/ ]3 v1 w; \- P% F
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor* N4 I' w- ^# |8 G% v9 S p
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
" ~3 L: N# r4 |9 ~' ?(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
1 u% p* P! o) d6 Hpermit another person
9 d/ Q, O3 m- |4 n0 ^(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
( @3 a% b# `5 u% T& Y6 a(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,9 W L' g3 e D7 R) w
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;0 Q) b! I1 J! n y1 v1 w9 |
(d) give or lend a financial9 x" u/ d: \7 M% F% |" F' B
responsibility card or a copy of it1 Z: K: [3 Z1 H0 s3 h
to a person not entitled to have that financial5 i" P, R7 q, r3 t( z* x* J
responsibility card or copy.

If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway: F* J& A7 p3 @/ a. ^5 C2 b
without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
6 C5 q. |3 ^' m0 a8 P- F' Othe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
# x5 T$ T* n7 T: M# I* c# b' [(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is5 j1 k0 B) H8 T: ?' T# u
not an insured motor vehicle.) H# [/ a4 o) l! d- I1 E8 s

If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this; D( ~$ ~% w' U6 T
Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this7 r* f6 X' z) F* N
section.

Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a
0 b0 W6 |+ A+ K3 bfinancial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the I& k) ^2 |, F, Y$ a
Insurance Act
" t( u* S) K0 \" |# K% m- @( M# vby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy, Y, a E2 ~* B+ k$ S
outside Alberta.# q# L& f8 |* E" O6 f( C
(4)6 k/ \* [( Q( ^: C; i, t4 C
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection6 E/ a+ J# _' t5 b/ v
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,! P6 {- Q1 v/ Z* V( ?9 L
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500) D/ I9 ? Z# i' |9 n. D) x' t
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
8 l! c0 s8 U; P/ gimprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not L1 E f) D1 h7 B4 S$ J. E) n
more than 6 months
~ e& _' l8 ~Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
