Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall" U! ?2 ?3 U& n( C1 Z
not do any of the following:
5 Y* C! Y' T; o9 Q- C(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor; V* V3 d7 `. ]7 @
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;8 b, T* K( E* X/ H
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
9 Q5 k6 O, G7 b& c8 _' Cvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
- R# j7 t4 d# r- k7 e(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
8 _5 ]& D- o- S9 bpermit another person! E9 x" I3 p' A9 S* O0 O6 |
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
4 j; [' r1 M0 z' M: l% |+ f, J(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,8 V4 l' h9 l/ g' D( _3 y2 T
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;0 X/ u; @' u! v) S5 g7 O
(d) give or lend a financial3 B3 [6 G. G H0 w; V1 n: P- h
responsibility card or a copy of it% _; S6 b* ^0 S' v4 Q6 z0 C
to a person not entitled to have that financial
8 m; N, g/ P% P6 c& ^# O: C- D2 Gresponsibility card or copy.
% y- q6 C: F/ [, \/ e5 ~ f(1.1)
4 a* v4 a& e/ W! \If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
9 V; d% `% f+ m- I7 ]1 h2 xwithout the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of' [" S. H9 w' c! s2 Z+ ^* M" d6 N
the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection' b% H, Y6 [! B% ~' G$ `) L! T
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is0 {+ @! d: }" l/ w* ]1 e! x5 X( {
not an insured motor vehicle.

2 j |* L9 J& j' _2 s. K' kIf the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this) G" U* ^* s3 G
Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this! l" R" b8 v% P% Z# G

Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a1 F1 A7 l7 M4 h) _' b3 U/ G( ~$ a8 S
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
e8 n' M2 Y2 j+ {/ W$ J. _Insurance Act1 |, r2 E% ?+ B( U f+ c- z/ L% W
by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
" R/ {# ]# _ r. koutside Alberta.
S6 A; g/ ~0 I9 ]4 p& Y% }(4)
: ~/ W G1 a% K3 Z3 Q% W2 uA person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection4 u! Y8 y4 ]) A( f0 }1 M: x$ g$ r
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,3 j5 z( u( I& j
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
5 ?* `" a( T6 v+ P [and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to" U# k6 h# U Z6 j
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
b8 N% a3 h- P1 U# ^- Omore than 6 months
* E! a* ]/ l' z
* Q j+ H$ h& o; S+ ^. s' OMinimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
