Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
5 S& {0 k0 m: {not do any of the following:
. m% Q1 z% b* E* A6 {( u# e6 p(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor( A7 N% i1 ^+ ?' r
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
* f% h7 H& X) s(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
7 \" R( ]" H/ ~0 n' A$ A$ F2 K' Mvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
$ C! @( P m, I! s! s(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,, F0 j. R" m8 Z+ u8 E/ O
permit another person
( \, V1 w; V* c( [+ p(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or2 y; F* ]4 n$ s8 W# E" R* y& V% I
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
! n) J; ~" i7 e4 M5 iunless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
% X$ H0 x- A0 N4 o" ]0 x- Z(d) give or lend a financial, b, y4 H2 g. h' n% Y, I+ W
responsibility card or a copy of it5 |0 X3 \; e0 f* ^8 r) X
to a person not entitled to have that financial% v& [' b" [5 X3 C( X! e
responsibility card or copy.1 {8 M' d+ J* y' ^" ]

" {! w8 ^3 c: V! f* j1 D% ZIf a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway1 Z; Z1 F4 `5 S" h# s9 z
without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
1 u* q P! \8 Y$ p" athe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
6 g6 m# g- B; V* v(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is
! e r; Z. }& K7 C- C2 Knot an insured motor vehicle.- x, t* q. F; z* b7 Y

9 l5 ^0 V. G) \( MIf the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this3 S4 F: l$ m5 P, K
Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this0 p n* m; }4 V5 Z; J
section.

! V8 Z Z+ ^$ b! pSubsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a& n6 D1 Y/ f) a7 e$ m3 T
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
4 V9 l. J$ N- m0 S% G oInsurance Act
; x/ _4 g5 ~8 v# x; }7 vby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy8 V7 [% _7 m3 l8 F' S
outside Alberta. Z0 E, ]: ]# h ~5 f

4 F( m5 ]* b% W3 Q# LA person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
3 T, y+ r% n4 o9 J- Q. j% j(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,- e4 {; S0 U3 [) D9 w3 E% ]" G* i! r- x; h
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
% O6 s+ a* ^5 G q+ x* ?! \- ~and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
+ c2 ?4 [% y( w- |imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
- [) K a! V7 ~3 h% Rmore than 6 months

Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
