Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall: o3 ]3 m. h: C$ l: k. A
not do any of the following:4 o# x8 ^6 w# }- N$ ]! P
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor# G; I6 D# u( m- |
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;! c7 O8 F6 H3 }! \! }, K
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor- l0 e; N, ^! y
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
: w* S& M2 ~7 O1 h3 D9 J# b9 j4 r' _(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,+ f) v) ]- W2 x
permit another person
9 y7 `" W$ ~( m7 d! g8 o" c(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
& \. y5 }4 _1 J+ d A: W(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,4 t [, a j( B4 g& ]& g- b
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
) Y5 Q) u6 D8 d0 u7 r(d) give or lend a financial [/ F* Q* C9 v. {4 ^
responsibility card or a copy of it

- k' t' E8 K3 Z1 mIf a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
+ z% v7 U3 [2 y/ Cwithout the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
^ [6 }" g$ p4 t0 Lthe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection; J; V; w }- p5 B: H2 F7 w
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is
6 u" p4 t# R* L0 l$ C+ z- L9 Rnot an insured motor vehicle.

If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this q# [7 o" N; b, H3 A$ g1 ?
Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this5 r: w7 v8 d6 h( m, e
section.

" G7 o4 ~% X- w) j6 t1 @Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a
& Z/ y! [! V$ }. W z( O3 y$ Ufinancial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the4 ~) }5 ~* X4 V2 ?1 l2 K+ x5 t
Insurance Act4 `, ?1 J. U% e. R$ Z& v% h
by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy8 s$ g& F* }2 m8 p/ m. `$ b
outside Alberta.% \: }7 O+ v. Z# c! V
(4)0 r2 [: z# L# y' t1 o% g
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection- g3 N9 G/ [8 u' G) |, U+ l3 I
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
2 x9 T) E( d2 j$ d0 L3 t(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
b% X% f; t3 c$ V! f" ?, f5 Cand not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to+ _; z' |+ j8 R+ g" I) C
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
- F3 p; v/ d H2 A: S* xmore than 6 months
& { l, I$ m4 m7 M J+ b0 Q2 V) ^+ o% @9 {" x8 p
Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
