Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
- G% Y2 G5 x2 enot do any of the following:& u* _4 Z# m5 L( q8 E& M( u& t* h
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor# Q) S0 V! C1 h9 ~
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle; \# }! M, m) O: I6 Q- h
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor* v, @1 s3 N$ @ r3 \0 K
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
, t( c$ t9 J s9 m; i, t(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,$ r) N5 B* @( I* U1 L, v7 d# t- `5 d
permit another person0 _4 }- E( ?1 T" |3 {' e, W
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or) m A: u4 P1 X# w/ T6 I. f# \, Q, O
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,* H; d% h V# d- M7 j3 T/ u% S! z
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
( {/ {' V/ ]1 u6 H(d) give or lend a financial
6 F s! M; E/ o3 ^, k( kresponsibility card or a copy of it% f4 ~$ U$ a' Y" |9 ?0 D8 k/ Z- A
to a person not entitled to have that financial5 r0 q/ H8 j% D0 P4 ]
responsibility card or copy.

0 P: D+ m+ s0 \; p. ~/ K3 xIf a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway8 q! E6 y$ [. M$ N
without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
1 s, g2 t" |6 z; Y2 athe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection7 J* F# P6 E2 P1 n4 T1 D
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is3 u- u! R% N, f; t2 y/ I
not an insured motor vehicle.

If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
$ P/ a5 H: k* Y8 nAct, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this( E j) u+ V) J: p; Q% k
section.

" |) Z& ?+ F4 S7 |0 x: A: fSubsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a4 y5 O; b8 s( {) e" y# T& A
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the: L1 Z2 P- D- ]8 `1 H/ O% z/ q" {
Insurance Act, x/ ?4 q% A( g- L$ U" B9 l! _8 x T
by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy% @% w6 A, s2 J) q2 w' ^3 c
outside Alberta.' A% Z* D4 c7 b9 Y
(4): I7 B& t X+ F) U$ O
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection; |0 @! h- j8 |
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
/ r2 `; V' b; o- R+ P- [(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
- C$ \# H: h# M4 |5 Wand not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
) T! Y$ i1 v* A0 m4 W; o4 himprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
" v; ?( b! \" Q( Tmore than 6 months

Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
