Newcomers are being offered some help when shopping for a home in Edmonton’s tight housing market.
4 @# M' A" ?$ i' f: N4 gImmigrant women and their families can now access a “household toolkit” crafted by a local service group for new immigrant families, through real estate agents. ( t! ?: v- ]/ o/ x

In the tool kit are 75 common hand tools – like a hammer and screwdriver – as well a book on how to buy a home, a home maintenance schedule and other items.

/ k, l1 {/ y) S& ?) I# S& j& Z“The tools are a symbol of hope for people trying to build new lives in Edmonton,” said Madeline Sarafinchan, president of the Edmonton Real Estate Board.

The program was announced by a group called Changing Together… A Centre for Immigrant Women.

Josephine Pallard, the group’s executive director, said Alberta’s economic boom has caused a housing shortage that makes it more difficult for immigrants to find a place to live and integrate into Canadian society.
