I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I8 E/ T8 F" ]) n7 U, c
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
( D1 A' F" Z. R$ a: B. Xconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and- y1 E7 h% f, Y5 i0 }0 g
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
4 R0 t, R; Z3 |) x( M0 Bwill acquire language earlier and faster.2 }/ W9 i$ }8 W5 S- ^* h

In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately1 J5 P% m$ T* J) k) s
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
5 s# d2 @- Q& F( }# q$ {videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
% n6 f# f7 d& Y; M. Wsimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you: u; Q; M6 o0 d; i6 A% K3 u! s
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your8 D$ z( G. \- M2 Q: `' e
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

$ [$ V$ `& m( [) ]At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common. h- o- |/ R. @6 ?' Q1 s$ {
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and5 K) S$ o! [6 I7 I9 x9 T
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously) R6 U6 b7 b, D! Q5 q! f1 j$ F
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
2 ~; |6 R0 t% [1 qknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
2 T) |8 L1 b. c5 B F1 p4 G; I% \& Nthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

7 }$ k% c. F$ g7 J! qFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,- Y+ o4 v9 F' X$ p2 {
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.& D: h- N0 {3 L. V+ X$ V
2 G/ T" _* u' Q) e# K; x" vThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done; l/ `* n G# y& X9 |
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she- p; G/ D- q* E0 A7 X, O1 J J
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will/ ?% q3 s% T7 k
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
3 ?) d# }. ]# I2 r0 H1 ware stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show2 ~0 H& J$ f+ e) R4 @3 r
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
; Q5 j5 }/ C- W& {in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
1 y% ?; H: a7 bdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
3 _) L" [0 o4 B! U. } \3 fand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of) F7 F6 l3 h$ Y( w$ g
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific/ a. ^/ J5 K( ` f
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child, L0 P) p( S3 S5 _
