! I9 T- O3 l/ b& xI am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
3 j: N, r. A- P, J. Cam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
6 i% a9 j$ K8 s; N) Pconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
* `- x" V0 _, k. o( W1 g2 j8 C4 _: Aattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
6 c% Q0 [ q9 E" ]: |7 Kwill acquire language earlier and faster.; ], m l' T, ?) h
+ T2 N/ R0 \: F+ R* J1 fIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
- r! {2 Q! R7 \/ v. V30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop# `$ A' r$ _2 r L7 u2 U
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
6 }& l% n+ ?; |simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
/ q! H i( \7 ?& M: @8 q9 tmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
8 T3 E( {" R" f9 y. q5 O- o; b& dbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.8 X1 Z r( q+ i. \

At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
0 C$ u: r+ e5 n% C' Gbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and+ X3 w8 W6 Y. G1 C( Z- Q6 B2 S3 H
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.
) T# D8 g9 y3 l- Q4 m; [( w# [) _8 {* k, [
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously) z: S2 I+ S7 z' Q `. K
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby0 V2 R) p4 F4 C4 s
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to. Q- f T8 s, K) D% g! k- o
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,. o+ ~3 |7 I) s2 D. @* o
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done& C+ M) h( K) I% I, {- f Q) N# G
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she3 x; a* t) A$ A C4 G2 w- P# E
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
4 s# j- P5 T, Rtake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate7 `& M. u; F/ ?
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
) q- u1 G( _: nAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
$ N, }, q8 L5 \& }; n$ ]% ^are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show. ~7 e s6 O$ F& I
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used- c; X+ N+ O& H; J6 E
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and7 [ A# |$ n- z2 y; V
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,6 _ g( Q. Q; K; f( U3 B
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of2 d7 A/ c: g8 m4 B$ H7 ]# ?; i I5 e
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific b8 C( Z- e' \" r( R/ A
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
