谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语# m, F- B3 K4 b& }  x
  D5 `, k& y; l; H( A$ S- ~1 a! M6 r
, Y4 a% r- b! R# g. r( r
在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯
) O+ R8 [: o- Z7 L# N之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。
: S& l, {/ z# Q3 ?, o' l2 N0 [) M若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!% k4 ?& w% b1 D# B# M" _

+ R6 b* n& O( N4 J$ V0 `8 n(1) empty suit:1 T5 M( \% V( O, Q  X" v
指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。3 Q' W% g/ w; [$ P* k
(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。)
8 r' t) R! p5 Q, p/ f! I例如:
7 `7 \% ~- y) W3 J/ a- i9 GAn empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.6 _# u& I) r9 i; s
(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。)! U. p  X: w; c4 p+ c9 z
Mr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.
# c: N( ]8 h' y5 s& |3 M(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。)
" r5 `, l7 ^2 I0 k6 p虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:
, U0 N+ H7 Y8 w( LThe company is filled with a lot of empty suits.) f. F0 W( b" f' g
(这公司有许多虚伪不重要的人)
2 q/ l; B2 M& h( ^(2) fair-haired boy:2 O- U) U* E6 O/ `/ D% V1 ?
指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man)6 z" [1 ?/ l" _* V
(通常用单数,当名词用)
' n; S8 {$ [6 o例如:: o/ W% E) t7 {+ Y& R4 c1 f
Mr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.
) O& n7 G+ J# ]( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。)
% x# `, c0 r2 L  `4 Y6 oNot being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions.
( P2 l( g! E3 @(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。)
& W& i/ D! K# s  V有时也可用复数:
+ A9 G4 ?4 U' A  b* n, `Mr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet.
; [5 @* v* P/ |, k4 Q5 V(Bush 先生为他的内阁选用两位过去的宠儿。)
7 j& w% r. j/ J! oFair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses.
$ E( t- K6 r7 a! L( |6 I- X(得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。)
% |# I/ K+ w: M, c7 ](但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法)
. h" u# Z& k1 a8 Q(3) fishing expedition:% V, `: o5 m$ M& g: M3 j
为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information)
2 e6 o: u1 a7 x1 U( y$ K; c4 m(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数)& C- r8 I$ P) N( v
例如:4 V$ l# C  Q- h  Y9 m( @* {
The judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.* c1 h5 y/ H, @: R! p7 I
(法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。)/ x. [: a' P! C+ [- u" h8 H
The police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case." q" p' c( H4 ~' J" D
(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。)
2 }, u' J* A9 ]( @, W2 B(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict), g) N3 a6 C) d
The reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.
6 Z( U1 X$ Q2 J- f7 j" c(记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。)
+ J0 l4 d. b+ ]9 j偶尔也有人用复数:6 d) z7 s' [$ p8 u/ {- [/ w& P# E
Several fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office.+ W0 G! z  M6 J; S
(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。)& v1 Z' I3 N, K, C: U
(4) filthy rich:
9 O7 [3 x8 L0 ?0 n8 N- ]意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy)
0 p) Z! @/ w( N+ k; V+ _* A) y# k5 l) n(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱)
9 ~" V7 O2 w3 i  Q: v* h多半当形容词用。例如:
6 ^! ^0 R$ S, u3 b: q' e& n5 B6 HWith a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich.
+ R2 k; K. O5 T& _# a- s" w" w( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。); F) I- B( J: S3 x
Despite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.9 E' p  q. v' s1 t5 x1 R
(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。)% O* i( {6 m% X: W
A filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.5 P9 f" O6 g) @# v2 c
(有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。)
2 \3 V* ?$ r: n* fFilthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters.
3 H) I3 R8 N3 h& S7 s(有钱人未必受人尊敬,除非有高尚的品格。)8 x: a* [, E- t
(注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法)% U) d4 \5 b# r! K- g) G' _; A) d
(5) fairy godmother:6 A# P3 p) _9 H3 V2 U; Q+ S
指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance), _5 A0 @' R, c( M
(多半指有钱的女人): A& z7 j* ~/ f* Y
(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:! \+ U1 Q# V8 V. s; q
Mr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.
6 t% o3 J* {* w& s( t(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)- B7 O$ N, {; A" v2 m8 p9 t2 U' K
After lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother.
: |7 {# ~! [0 c4 }' D( ^(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。)6 V7 S; k' g" J6 @0 j$ I
有时也用复数:
7 M) N! G1 F& f- QOnly business women can act as fairy godmothers.; w% x4 _+ |/ A1 r* m0 b5 e
(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)
& J1 |* W- e/ r, D9 r* nIn Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered.
) _  w# `8 q8 G- B! \(在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。)

6)eye opener:% P# M$ {, F" x5 M) O! r5 X( S
指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion)8 [% |, H1 w( f- E- |
(当名词用;通常只用单数)
0 x( ]3 E( S. D" E  u' _例如:2 P, P; J* \% f& h
Your wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters.
8 e) X$ }1 x+ v2 s(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。)& S+ F7 f# W& E
Mr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.
$ {: x1 B/ `6 ~4 P(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。)% A  Q1 i) k) _. V3 q$ W' }
The popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants.& v  P5 E$ w0 r1 S
(大名鼎鼎的世界日报是北美许多中国移民惊喜的新发现。)
% H. e: Q8 m- j( b  b8 Y' f4 M) DSome American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many Chinese people.3 L% {9 b  x! w! d
(美国一些的风俗习惯和想法,让许多老中感到惊奇。)
2 B% v& _) L' H9 n! |1 G- Y3 @0 d; s(7) hot dog:
% s: Z% l7 n4 G- {6 J. p% D6 H- m指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用)' \4 r- }& c& n5 C$ ~  f0 c
例如:: _( H. K( u- h. X+ F: D
Some young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.  h; K+ L1 R- \# J" x# H3 t
(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。)
8 {9 M$ A0 m  ~/ P+ {& y: G(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers)' [; W# F4 ^* \+ _9 d
In front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.
$ x1 d) w2 o) O" \3 k(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。)
: G& R+ r0 t. U) u( c+ b1 [, e(动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging)
4 i4 W1 J9 D3 `* Q3 ]2 _/ C1 YDuring the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer.

(8)eager beaver:$ s3 }2 g8 h+ p* V: L, J
指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others)0 @" a* j/ C! j: [6 k
(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)9 O# x* \' Y+ y0 S% S# c9 k, o: d
(当名词用,可指男女)
* B, I/ a) g/ ^, o7 K例如:2 o; z+ [+ X+ x+ N
John seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.. _' u3 [2 C! _3 D, y. S7 C
(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。)0 J% j% x- Q2 v" K% v! m9 U, j
Being an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues.- L! w2 m6 w2 M
(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。)
* |6 e" j' s+ G3 ]' bDoes Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?. r! y0 W( q2 G
(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?)
3 b  N: V% Q# ^' uYou may find some eager beavers in any organizations.' w3 H- l$ Y  x6 c* Z% Z$ X
(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。)
* z4 o. k& E2 ~) L(9)doubting Thomas:
& L; l  u# I+ @% u) l6 Y6 N这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others)0 [, Y1 j! S7 m" G
(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活)
' o  t" I6 Y, G2 U: e(当名词用)6 B! \7 t* v( v* ~0 _( |/ E
例如:
" d, I* j: e' l/ ^" J8 DI am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.
% K+ K# ~* @! L3 g' K  H2 F(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。)% y; ?5 Q1 g  R6 Z( A
There must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.
+ T; T8 u8 _) {(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。); ~/ D+ m6 Q$ i0 d
也可用复数:( p1 g  a) D6 G
My friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people.
  ~0 d/ J/ U5 x6 N9 j' }(我朋友对许多中国商人不信任。). p0 o6 P# j6 [3 L
If there are too many doubting Thomases in our society, people will lose confidence with one another.
( `8 {! g1 o" m2 ~: o, z/ r(假如社会上有太多的怀疑主义者,那么人与人之间的信心就会丧失。)( p! H: ?+ A% v" M' U- k
(10)dragon lady:
. N1 L. v0 G( U+ D$ J% S9 B' C指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用)
3 J- n+ T$ n- \) p例如:( E( [* Y- q3 e% `& w
The chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady.
3 e% `( [/ a3 a' K( V(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。)* `' l6 ]7 c4 k  m9 N; T
I am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady.
5 M, j, B; K  C9 N2 g! F(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。)
( C' g, @3 z1 t7 Z1 E" EShould your girlfriend happens to be a dragon lady, are you going to breakup with her?$ R9 E8 N$ ]8 F! S& u9 C
(假如你的女友成了凶恶的女人,你要与她分手吗?). L: d1 R( p7 T- `' P) k+ M
也可用复数:

注:老外指凶恶男人,不用 dragon gentleman,利用英国侦探小说里的中国恶棍傅满洲(Fu Manchu)为代表
