谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语6 M: ~3 h2 Z5 k6 t* J- b

  H& |. R& n# l( m0 Q+ X0 g; P1 \' J
在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯* n, M$ p0 b& S  Q9 J
之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。
4 w" ~# o6 e. n# f若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!
3 l1 ^8 a% Y; B5 {. Q+ m6 |, h
7 ~% k" l+ D+ C(1) empty suit:2 \2 m2 k7 a* w' j
指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。
/ F3 z* r$ s6 M9 E; U(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。)
  \- N- ?$ G  d% N; f7 d例如:- i; [* l7 Y4 S/ o( W6 t* v9 W+ y
An empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.
) ~! r7 L1 \9 u) I! t+ V(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。)& s- z; C0 c# ^4 e3 _0 R
Mr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.
3 c5 c( O+ ]) J  A: V; S' {6 S(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。)& ^' w$ f) o! k2 M. d- @& k# U9 n
虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:
' x" P9 Y" {) w+ B0 z& O) aThe company is filled with a lot of empty suits.
, T0 k, P5 ]/ n3 v(这公司有许多虚伪不重要的人)
$ w& g2 i% U- r/ e2 O( O(2) fair-haired boy:
) \+ C% m) u9 I+ A6 _* T6 E- y指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man)1 w/ \+ z2 n4 {
(通常用单数,当名词用), W' b$ G4 s; [; P6 t  p
例如:
0 A3 z+ _- c/ t/ A% s$ XMr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.8 h( ]4 E6 V7 U0 b' P
( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。)
5 p# b- s& _) KNot being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions.2 X4 o$ _3 Q. D7 k/ q% T5 z
(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。): c6 [' q" o/ ^- z
有时也可用复数:
- m! r7 ^& W- v4 P& wMr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet.
$ S6 }0 M0 o4 D$ {, B4 [1 d(Bush 先生为他的内阁选用两位过去的宠儿。)- K3 c5 d6 j* T" l$ @1 t
Fair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses.# H. r3 c( X  R8 }, K1 f
(得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。)
7 i+ z, v% i1 S4 i(但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法)
' E$ ~! D  E8 u1 ~(3) fishing expedition:
- U" }$ D/ A) }" T! q: [为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information)
* n6 b/ j- i. Z* n; z(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数)
' k! v1 W; \9 g" Y0 p/ w) `" M例如:. f+ |5 l% Q; H# V( s, V4 n7 V% v
The judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.
3 F, Y" f: l" z& K(法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。)/ t8 t) U0 A$ h
The police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case.$ A$ o9 A3 i! {  S- z. J' i
(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。)
( q7 q$ m2 w" f" S, z0 k+ s(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict)6 q- o  k5 \/ L* `5 v0 ~
The reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.  V, ?) P+ \* R) p/ D* S5 V
(记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。)# d3 i7 j) L2 Q! X5 I3 W9 d# p
偶尔也有人用复数:1 H8 v" h% }9 e/ D# ~( C
Several fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office.
* ^; Q9 o) r  }: E& _: m* e0 h(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。)* b$ p1 g' X, g8 F5 y# H
(4) filthy rich:
5 U3 M2 \8 A, }+ r6 ^2 C: t意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy)
% y' e9 ?- b& j/ w1 ?3 }, k(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱)
6 t6 @# K2 x" K0 N! e) E' C多半当形容词用。例如:& J7 ]( t' ?& Z( g7 n
With a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich.
# C9 d6 t. p) V' \# P* V( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。)
0 a7 E; N! X5 Q4 CDespite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.' I( r2 b- M7 d' A$ u
(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。)
7 W) e9 p" C! ~# K" z- H0 S5 @6 sA filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.
4 i4 K( t1 o& ]$ ](有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。)
7 N5 r5 D+ y) _6 g- M# g+ u( {" bFilthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters.6 x* M0 l( M0 h! g5 ?
(有钱人未必受人尊敬,除非有高尚的品格。)% z- V# f" h* ]; F/ R% s
(注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法)) L$ w7 T9 [9 E* \
(5) fairy godmother:1 e$ B- J' M3 Y6 b% H) x2 J
指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance)
: |8 Q4 M2 v- g8 j5 A% A+ {) h(多半指有钱的女人)+ f0 o$ d  r" x4 W8 M% _' F
(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:
4 a: L8 X# \) W) c, |! lMr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.
- T; h1 Y, z- @3 V+ q(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)9 G( I. V: d. B) |5 ^  ~9 `( L
After lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother.3 `8 m0 |, |$ o
(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。)
" O- U' I4 K% h  J+ v7 g有时也用复数:1 x1 i& Z) i0 a- g8 v8 N. X! b  M$ \
Only business women can act as fairy godmothers.
' R8 T9 A7 o+ ]/ E% V$ I(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)' h0 F+ T: y! n4 _" [: |. E
In Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered.
: Q; ?  W6 v3 I3 V2 |  g$ h* E( i* Q(在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。); A8 n8 O  T% N5 I# _; J

5 o0 V1 T& m+ {3 V& X# c. _5 J2 }. d3 q
6)eye opener:* R0 q; t, h6 b  u
指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion)
8 e3 ~: [$ `+ Z8 a(当名词用;通常只用单数)
. c3 K, y, ~5 a7 f/ A# ?0 w例如:& o+ W" \* k: z+ ]: a. l9 l! @
Your wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters.
4 I) d& V1 n$ o) S7 {(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。)4 y9 R# ^! l: ?8 b3 h8 v1 Y
Mr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.
; g! Y5 h% s6 [7 K& V& P  f3 g(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。)
- W% k) s3 f0 j/ l  IThe popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants.
  l2 R$ K1 j4 G# E+ W(大名鼎鼎的世界日报是北美许多中国移民惊喜的新发现。)" z/ p9 ?7 ]. j( N/ Q: D7 T
Some American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many Chinese people.& D2 }- x/ m! R) A) ~9 O
(美国一些的风俗习惯和想法,让许多老中感到惊奇。)5 D4 ]7 `, k' }! F7 |3 d
(7) hot dog:
" f7 _2 j0 e3 _# {$ B指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用)
8 h% e; S5 U* [0 T例如:
8 g0 {, H: M2 h' p+ LSome young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.1 k6 g. [' C3 }* z8 H
(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。)& z4 P) S% Y* z) x
(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers)
- D: O! R- u) o" q* |0 RIn front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.
3 P, h8 z! C: N0 H4 T+ W% f(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。)- [0 o0 O8 @+ _
(动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging)
' d6 o9 b+ S* E7 k/ S$ r) LDuring the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer.
: Z. Z9 q- W) n" i(在空军表演时,一位飞行员做惊险的飞行动作。)
" F; k0 b3 t3 c* U# V$ n也指真正的热狗食物:& {- u+ r" i6 m9 S. A9 n
The hot dog is one of the favorite fast food in the U.S.
' ?2 y+ x. i  U! C(在美国热狗是一种受欢迎的快餐。)* A* z7 c: p9 G9 b7 g4 l) \
也可表达欣赏的心情:
, {5 H2 Q% V2 K- G1 G- K. cHot dog ! What great news for me.4 Y% C) }0 l$ @6 }4 V5 h& e

- j6 D) p2 R# m指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others)0 a+ o$ e- h, b% e8 N( O  {
(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)* u' a; R+ r' g6 [
(当名词用,可指男女)
, Z: h( D7 G9 d例如:
0 {5 k0 Z  s! d& [1 eJohn seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.
( s, O" t8 B* K% a8 x0 X. U( k(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。)/ V3 [8 Z' A4 |6 z/ c% _2 _
Being an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues.8 q5 R, S8 ^" ^# e# Y
(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。)
- |0 E# a3 ^  Z; ~  K4 q/ ZDoes Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?- K5 j( a6 A/ e
(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?)7 E1 ~8 }  }, P
You may find some eager beavers in any organizations.+ W6 R7 y) D8 V" s2 e8 C
(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。)
2 ]5 G$ U3 ~0 V2 o& V: E8 u(9)doubting Thomas:
. g) u8 n- e# r- m! }这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others). z' y9 w7 V, b6 [
(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活). g; S2 _1 r% K: L7 B0 Q
(当名词用)
# b- _6 p( J' A0 |; i. y& K例如:3 [9 L, q1 w! _5 ^; ?
I am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.
  i' |6 z7 N0 l/ M" N: B(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。)
& J1 r8 w% Y- T' L1 aThere must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.) V; O! `5 X- Y; I* _& o% i
(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。)
9 |) x/ X1 G6 [9 O! P) T) E* s也可用复数:) @- j" Y) n' v( d
My friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people.
0 _3 _5 J; U, I" e0 ^(我朋友对许多中国商人不信任。)
8 _! u$ i: ?3 b9 v9 A" a$ P2 rIf there are too many doubting Thomases in our society, people will lose confidence with one another.; y7 F: ^' }2 d, o: x: y
(假如社会上有太多的怀疑主义者,那么人与人之间的信心就会丧失。): g  F4 q0 w) E- j1 @, D
(10)dragon lady:5 C3 g( n# [0 ~& l8 f
指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用)( _( y& s0 D; F  O* n# D! I
例如:9 w) s8 I: D3 Y  m! R( W. u
The chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady.
1 ^7 i! ]8 l) n8 d& V6 e# u8 Z(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。)
0 l/ ?- b! S8 y7 ~; B# j8 h/ kI am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady.2 V  u! U% F% d) z6 y3 Y
(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。)
8 Y7 A7 ~% y0 e3 E: y* _Should your girlfriend happens to be a dragon lady, are you going to breakup with her?7 r" `# |; B4 s7 |

There may be many dragon ladies in our community.

' {' m" W1 \/ I  x% i& _* K+ K! `) u注:老外指凶恶男人,不用 dragon gentleman,利用英国侦探小说里的中国恶棍傅满洲(Fu Manchu)为代表
