　　North country scene:
                                                                                               
　　A hundred leagues locked in ice,

　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

　　One single white immensity.

( F  w3 A  F! v) y　　The Yellow River"s swift current

4 `- n, ]7 i6 A　　Is stilled from end to end.
. f+ d0 J( D! ]
　　The mountains dance like silver snakes

7 G$ i* O9 T" W/ `* H　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,

: t% N. K' k1 t. O; |# }　　Vying with heaven in stature.

7 u! W$ }4 I3 }　　On a fine day, the land,

# n- e8 B: a+ J* n6 q6 @6 _2 W　　Clad in white, adorned in red,

　　This land so rich in beauty

　　Has made countless heroes bow in homage.

& ]- n( K  K8 K5 c% }　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti

2 d; M3 S+ x5 M- [　　Were lacking in literary grace,

# s; {6 k; I+ J8 R; t  N$ J# f　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu
! n+ Q) A7 X3 d7 A: Y
: ~$ @. g) l8 k, d0 z　　Had little poetry in their souls;
! Y! I0 E; {4 a* ^: o3 G　　And Genghis Khan,
2 M  |+ j! v! p- g
　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,

　　Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched

　　All are past and gone!

　　For truly great men

　　Look to this age alone.
