　　North country scene:
                                                                                               
　　A hundred leagues locked in ice,

　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

3 q4 e4 h4 O9 Z) w6 L  v　　Both sides of the Great Wall

; B6 w5 E. t" Z　　One single white immensity.
  ~' |# w; ]) ]; m  g6 r
2 a, ]+ k, }2 Y9 T% R　　The Yellow River"s swift current
6 x2 F& M+ J9 I; D7 T" w  }9 c
　　Is stilled from end to end.
3 ~+ i( h  V; l% p
; Q/ t% S. W6 j* K% C　　The mountains dance like silver snakes
5 t' |( b/ `6 {6 V- G
　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,

　　Vying with heaven in stature.

. j9 Y/ b+ q) ]) h+ p　　On a fine day, the land,

+ P" Y8 S$ e9 V8 v9 r　　Clad in white, adorned in red,

　　Grows more enchanting.

　　This land so rich in beauty

: Q5 g, {' O; W# B5 _5 G　　Has made countless heroes bow in homage.

　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti

. L& Q8 p" n, g! [　　Were lacking in literary grace,

: h4 v. M5 s6 a) T. P　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu

$ x5 D. Q% c  r' x4 E; m3 [& Q+ d& ~, ^9 i　　Had little poetry in their souls;
' ?% Q( }' r! o  l　　And Genghis Khan,

　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,
2 X' s9 M& J/ L) U+ k+ n  [
+ {! Q; }4 I; d6 _+ k　　Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched

6 H5 D# a3 H& P1 R: g　　All are past and gone!

" `. x% C' M  P, l/ w6 I: o　　For truly great men

5 v8 P" _0 _+ e  i0 ~　　Look to this age alone.
