We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,! G6 u- T; r6 B) i+ r
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood, f5 g& ]' Q9 p2 m2 o7 V
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
: `/ l" Q6 A* k! G6 F( ^- O$ W8 i2 J/ btogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
# ?6 w. Y; Y0 J% @ ?" hCommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.( C9 L7 [4 \& ?" G

Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years
Z3 ^. g6 |3 C, u0 W0 R, sof fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
' G, E& _7 A2 wconflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
* y; f* d7 p+ q# ~5 L& Iinternational community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:& w) f2 h% j5 \! t9 A# `! A' ]- G
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter8 {3 O+ r7 w( A. z4 U T! e
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
" t) R! H4 |% f- G, sisland and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
: t3 }0 o, l" |, Ointernational peacekeeping operation.# v: D5 X. w+ U% i/ J* A
& t, I1 ~+ v; P2 b5 H9 b) |
This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
: t+ s, t; U2 x$ T' ~) {6 iown story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
/ P8 o5 M- m/ H8 ^+ t" L+ v' Mwho brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV5 ~( p8 L( Y5 ~% }7 w' s
screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and: J& D+ Q- F! G# F8 ^) o
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems, O A' ^" h% y x3 I8 D
improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
6 F9 X' ~% j" c7 K% {* {$ \# _+ oand music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!9 P/ Z5 _7 x2 x$ G6 r6 J
' U9 F0 ~. T8 Z. IAccording to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the
: d$ `6 l/ d' r8 r4 c4 w" T6 p$ dsuccess of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
3 \& Q0 F6 q, A, S1 k6 xprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the9 r- O+ G; w* O ~7 Z$ a
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
a8 k M# Z1 k. ?3 iAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
- ^3 T* W# t- u9 ^so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."1 Y( `" w9 f9 D+ F6 s& F
