In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community5 F$ T; G7 C2 @. J* N
Engagement Training.

$ D1 I3 A+ i2 x$ y' ?7 `We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,- N9 P1 J! r; b8 t$ ]5 ^" ^
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood' P& ?1 w4 W* P+ d8 [8 P
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work; K3 `! b, d- V G0 \( t4 V' V
together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy$ O( s- R6 l+ h: D# d' d3 E/ @. h
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.% N3 T' q& Z& G

Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years
) p& ^2 ]+ `: l; k7 ^of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
% S- E: a. P0 l! gconflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the( i- L2 F; o5 k
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:8 Z4 g- X: ~! v/ n7 L1 g# f" y
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
( \4 S$ H# `; |7 eIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the" R7 @* `3 ~7 i' Q+ r. W7 D
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
3 G# R* @( N5 }2 W* t1 Xinternational peacekeeping operation./ x6 ]! Z5 b; o
+ J) K: o* ]. I1 h# b2 x7 q) [This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
: G5 N* `: |( S* k+ q7 yown story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
& F; |5 ?* M# G' q) @% Owho brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV. C0 v: E0 S( y) `) i/ {( e- T& w
screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and- r& e5 P; r6 e/ h& ]
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems1 V& d8 j# W0 W3 e' I2 j$ x
improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
+ I0 M5 e( B/ M7 c1 Z1 eand music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!
& T, u2 K- F; \9 U9 e7 w6 v4 x4 \! N- P% l3 Q1 O3 l
According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the
: w1 o) T! |/ ?1 ^- rsuccess of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole# x, \1 t8 t- |3 s. i1 p
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
0 _- e* l7 h) K5 _0 S1 {hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around." s+ H3 [; W: e& m, _% T3 Z
Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,6 z# ]9 B0 ]/ G
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."5 d! P4 E) {" r. @
