Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
/ d1 D4 v* L: s3 w l+ W& ECouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 6 k5 l* p, w: J& q# t1 e4 z3 M
news to report from that meeting.

" \( A. w/ {& f3 G$ DFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
6 g/ U9 v; s. e& f9 W8 eundergraduate international students from the increase to the & m: d+ m0 S& Y8 t( X
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international $ h Z' R8 i) A+ u& z% H8 m; }
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
! T! u2 F4 a' W5 ?. n" L, ftuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). ! R( f4 x& X3 h, l
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase ) b+ R$ s3 k9 c. d6 h
the differential for international graduate students.* v% g- e4 \# P8 C# |* |7 ~
0 [4 `! O& E$ C( x9 GNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
2 ~! I3 U6 ^9 I1 F4 ~6 Dincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to & J' Y, u8 K' D! ` y$ B8 r: A( a
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
2 y9 ] C; M" P' G4 h0 E4 w6 Gwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 8 i' H; a2 G6 o) V8 i3 W5 U1 r
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in , C3 T3 \0 D4 n4 |0 {. y- t" J
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
' D$ O' q. Y7 tincreases once they are here.1 w' y( m6 V5 Z& ~6 w% n# z4 I' y. b: q

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
9 |. c/ p( C2 |: l5 Binternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
) c$ U7 Q6 L3 E9 r) w( Lwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
% q( y% f9 w! |have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 6 q! k# k9 Q2 |# ?! K6 j, C
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your $ e k& h- n6 r; e
