International tuition. Let's get it on.

; i6 s+ N4 E9 ]Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
- V7 M" l" ?# o" K6 I; m' A) [Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
. Z7 J) B1 R& f) r3 `: x) e5 ^" snews to report from that meeting.
, n  R+ Y$ a  Z1 t- l- u) D; f
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
" b# {; ?8 q$ P' zdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
5 R8 w' `3 d% F2 _students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
9 B% G7 E. h' i- b: {( Q7 |6 Utuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
0 Y) j: E2 d6 ~7 Q/ P; |) r2 @" _the differential for international graduate students.

Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
3 X# S) x. e3 c* aleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
( t4 n9 o: |0 s+ z* @) s: Rtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
5 p' S1 Q! V) J2 L; {increases once they are here.

" V! I- y. M' A0 J9 q* @7 sThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
" n( q* c+ G- S0 v% x- lincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
8 }* |  M  e9 ]+ i7 mhelp. Thank you.
