" r5 E$ F. {4 B7 DGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. 9 r. ]; V7 C0 l; l. o

7 I5 l N) p; m. d( ?6 j' C9 `Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
4 c/ G9 R) E; J7 C9 LCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
- x- B* b5 L/ S% V, O0 znews to report from that meeting.

3 Z, V- g. r+ Y& @- S9 FFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current ; k! s' w; a% R
undergraduate international students from the increase to the 0 u- k+ f% h* p9 H# b
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international # Y$ w" I9 r- b. D2 i# k$ X$ n
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base . Z% N D% ~6 O: {
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 7 s8 w$ r v# \: G; P3 X
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
' w' M9 [0 `# Tthe differential for international graduate students.
$ z2 M/ z/ }9 _: j) P- K# Y1 z# s0 x
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
7 n: }7 v' e4 F% i& f8 Lincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
- B! }, T/ m, u$ g* e9 m220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
1 F& r% W2 o6 Y$ l* @will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At + K2 I+ O+ B* \# U/ t
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in # j$ q2 q- R0 Y- D) e2 C
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected 4 I! S5 ?& E) E9 ^9 J# ^. n8 a
increases once they are here.; G5 P) Z$ W$ f
" i1 N* }, t. j7 E( b0 qThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
8 L+ g$ O8 E4 R! S% o3 Linternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I 8 u0 T5 d% b' Y* g* m; ~, W
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
% F8 b3 K# x8 D) C+ J! A$ ihave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
" H9 I' I: C Rincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
