Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
/ h7 [! R3 d. H$ enews to report from that meeting.

First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
8 t$ F) A$ R% e8 X6 Sundergraduate international students from the increase to the
% I4 t  S# x, N: \! wdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
% J' K0 _* O+ ~& o+ C0 A" f6 @students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
9 G' X0 M+ U. T$ ^0 z7 qAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
8 [0 `4 h' x7 _5 o9 j: h8 n, Cthe differential for international graduate students.

Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
* c8 z' O" }' H' o) r( O# u220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
: M- d! Q7 K+ Sleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
( c1 ]; g- ^5 S+ `increases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
$ {  @; u6 Q7 ninternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
# [5 c$ O; e7 ?. M! U/ ?* xhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
# o$ z9 k# C4 h1 O3 eincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
: r2 x% L: F/ ghelp. Thank you.
