( z; E' x4 Q! R' Q$ _Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

: T4 ^- R" A( u: d3 [Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 1 R! O2 ^2 `' t6 A( I% g
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 8 s( r0 T) o, @, m
news to report from that meeting.+ ?( K; `4 D; n ]
7 J9 I" b0 N4 y: {% ?: Y# xFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
/ V6 H! I, K/ A7 Z; q: jundergraduate international students from the increase to the 4 R- l! s, b8 O& C
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international 0 F) w5 }1 f% v, R) b* g% T
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
/ @3 P; K8 I5 u" N- w3 h# u Stuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
4 _+ Q6 J% r- z- Z) K- n, l0 wAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase 2 V9 E4 @% E7 t( b. n+ m n
the differential for international graduate students.7 m b0 x; o) ]6 ]/ O: X
$ T7 h& u! j* {% k5 H& Z' C- mNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an 7 n$ X' x3 |& O6 J) o
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
$ Y( L; [' G/ t& N220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 6 J3 Z# n4 Y- U$ G3 y
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 3 f) b$ {( N( e. K% K
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
7 d- x/ e% `7 s+ A& }tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected + F4 g2 N# G, i- ^# Y* J
increases once they are here.

" s- w' [1 e' @( n/ AThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
8 c% O- g$ L$ S- i: _- }: sinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I 8 k2 ^8 ]8 r& V2 c% J) X
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that % n8 f( I1 M# J% `
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 2 }( Q0 T, N" r9 g" v3 z
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your - r v5 s1 ?) q
