- I% } H/ v: A" AGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. ! h4 i* H% c: q- ^* A! D' X

. y' q& I7 v- v3 MYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
8 ?* [4 L9 q$ m" C4 a6 ZCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
8 k- u- C# j( q! c* K0 _3 ]news to report from that meeting.3 M! x3 M- a) g8 h/ b1 H

First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current ) |$ K% R) M, |+ _8 a* C, ?0 h6 m
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
9 W8 K& C7 B1 F3 l! R# }differential fee. This means that next year, all current international . i. J9 k, ~0 R& Y; x q
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base : ~2 B! U1 W; g
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 6 S) n: M7 {- q x2 ]7 d( X
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase 8 ^2 @: S6 V! a) t
the differential for international graduate students.5 X3 N% G: ]( x6 s, _; n
; o' H& u( A; h) N/ r) q X8 \Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an 4 S* \0 f: I( |
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 7 E3 i3 c' N: O K) r* ^/ F, h
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 1 Q' f, l) v5 j" @. y# _
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
T" N+ k$ X" e5 W9 V7 |% R' t8 o2 rleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
0 m4 q) a8 T, Q! ~0 E/ E# Y& ttuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
* X$ I# h$ Z: ]8 jincreases once they are here.

6 K6 V* _" F1 b+ E0 v M* G' ~3 ]2 tThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
4 W% K/ b' \, x/ T- R) e4 W- Binternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

4 I9 N) W& e3 ^, K, u! Q rhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
