The VERTO Project
The YOUCAN VERTO Project is a Government of Canada funded project that will
bring 12 (per intake) at-risk youth together into a unique 20 week group-based
  g! U: t+ [; }: ]employability skills program entitled “The VERTO Project”; 16 weeks of day
program and 4 weeks of employment exposure. YOUCAN is an acronym that
stands for Youth Organizing to Understand Conflict and Advocate Non-Violence.
8 G! U/ b8 N; `- v# M, AYOUCAN has served youth in the Edmonton area for almost six years and our
  L4 k. h! i/ vmission is to equip youth to engage and inspire others to peacefully resolve
conflicts and develop healthy relationships in their communities. The goal of the
' e* W! z: R2 T7 @+ [VERTO Program is to assist participants in obtaining and maintaining the skills
, p& x" {' i, ]1 U  ^7 Mnecessary to bring success into their lives. The program is designed to serve
) }4 X. o4 P3 a/ N# `youth who have been involved in the justice system. The program will expose
/ Q2 z# b4 Q1 C$ ?: ]. {  qparticipants to a wide range of components focusing on: employment
) k) X4 w: o8 X0 f' J) ddevelopment, personal wellness, technology learning, conflict resolution and
6 v, a9 l1 f1 T) j1 kexposure courses. Additionally, we will incorporate topics around health and
wellness, volunteerism and leadership courses. The youth will be provided with a
3 j6 M' B7 G4 w, e6-month employment follow-up once the program is completed.
The project will run from 9:30-4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Central
YOUCAN office, located at 8718-112 Avenue in Edmonton, Alberta.
The following position is a one-year contract with the possibility of
" p' U$ c, a" c* @" k/ i: H5 n2 d/ ^extension dependant of funding and performance. Resumes will be

• Responsible for building relationships with employers within the
community to partner with YOUCAN to ensure there are employers that are
+ b) Q2 C7 Q6 u2 G: t- v3 cwilling to expose youth to the current employment opportunities
  o' I+ K# u+ b. m• Ensure the youth action plans are reflecting the employment goals as
being realistic to each youth participant
, f: Y5 h/ P) a" h, D: a. h; G% g7 A* H) Y• Work with the youth to find the appropriate training needed to equip the
youth with the necessary skills needed to find the employment suitable to
each participant
4 B* V, K" o  g6 S8 A3 x, U• Assist youth with employment development including the development of
; [; G9 m* h9 E6 W: tcover letters and resumes etc.
• Coordinate the employment exposure component and on site work
+ x- i* w. O7 oexperience of the project, and monitor the progress of each youth at the
placements
• Conduct the 6 month follow up process for each of the youth, evaluating
the process, and supporting the youth where needed
• Work closely with staff of the Verto Project to ensure the holistic approach
is being fulfilled for each youth
• Administrative tasks, such as phone, fax, filing, copying, etc. that are
related to YOUCAN’s Verto Project

Experience Required: Employment Developer
 Post-secondary education or 3 years related experience accepted

 Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
 Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, organizational and

 Strong connections with industry, or the ability to make those connections

 Strong skills in building relationships with industry and youth
 Experience working with youth at risk, and able to assess the needs of youth
at risk as it pertains to employment
 Skilled in software applications, computers and other office equipment
 Strong leadership and active listening skills
 Ability to motivate youth
