Edmonton new home prices see biggest drop in 23 years

# ~$ ?3 i9 \# \. z3 T- k3 nEDMONTON - Prices for new homes in Edmonton fell 5.3 per cent in July compared to the same month last year, marking the biggest year-over-year drop in 23 years, said Statistics Canada today.

* t3 T9 c) M0 K! ]9 h- ^Edmonton's cooling market showed the biggest year-over-year drop of any Canadian city.

3 g. C9 y* v/ _0 P7 {Compared to June, Edmonton new home prices nudged downward 0.2 per cent.


6 K; L3 o. r6 E, n' K0 XCalgary saw a 0.3 per cent slide compared to July of last year.

% g& I5 P2 k/ p8 P" g$ ^7 q: @"Markets in these cities continue to adjust after experiencing record price increases in the last two and a half years," the federal agency said.

9 l  A. m, u" ^) K4 SEven heated Saskatoon posted a slower annual increase of 13.1 per cent, "further confirmation of a trend of deceleration in this city. Many builders reported increased prices as a result of higher material and labour costs," the agency  said.

2 Z* D( G0 K0 D, [0 A  }$ LThe fastest pace was in Regina, which saw a year-over-year price increase of 29.6 per cent, down from its record rise of 34 per cent in April.

- C8 A8 n( x5 v: @! O; qAs the market continued to cool in Western Canada, prices for new homes rose nationally at a slower pace in July for the sixth consecutive month.

/ B0 ]1 E" e* F( X% a/ PPrices were up 2.7 per cent in July from a year earlier, down from June's annual pace of 3.5 per cent. On a monthly basis, prices edged up 0.1 per cent between June and July.
