Master Composter/Recycler Program / Free!

) R) _6 P7 c. `5 d2 \Dear colleague: once a year, the Waste Management Branch hosts the
0 z! ?; Q# p, i& `3 g) G' yMaster Composter-Recycler Program. Over a 3 weeks course schedule
) a' Q( r3 s" i(Tues./Thursday evenings and Saturday) volunteers will learn about+ W, ~' X, N6 u3 K! Q! F. Y
environmental stewardship in our city, such as: history of waste; X; L& P9 [0 i/ X8 z
management; home composting; household hazardous waste;7 l3 \* i, c F8 E/ `# f' S7 I! l
vermin-composting and residential recycling., H/ m0 I) t4 b/ u# Z
* O5 H8 J2 k$ I6 W# A
This course offers in-class instruction as well as several field trips
8 _9 T9 t3 |; {5 Dto various City facilities. After finishing the course, graduates
( c8 m5 j2 F( [5 Qcomplete 35 hours of volunteer activity promoting the four R's:, r1 l" K6 S5 q- g6 D4 f9 d# ]
reduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Graduates become important, M* R$ |: ?+ V* T$ r7 v" X
resources in their communities as they broaden awareness about the
* t) i& } {$ `4 o9 n, W( z% aimportance of composting and recycling.) @8 N, h: w( `; E. [

Examples of volunteer activities include: help with Reuse Fairs & the
, W Q/ Z7 S. ^: s2 A8 JReuse Centre; helping friends/neighbours with composting problems;
: b' o; Y$ `2 R6 j t; e2 `public education display booths; assisting with programs and
* ]" |0 f8 [8 @2 D& y* `! ?, Ymaintenance at the City Compost Education Centres; assisting at* a( g d) c" }" I7 X9 p
various demonstration gardens and general public and school

. r7 v5 }' `5 m1 F: EThere are many other opportunities for volunteers to contribute and0 p3 d7 k. Q1 d
volunteers are able to choose the opportunities that interest them the+ x8 @6 {% N- v: z4 _$ W
most. Curious about recycling and composting and sharing your3 j7 J( g) E+ ^8 }# T) N
knowledge with others, then apply to become a Master
