D2 L& d( L2 q. [% fDear colleague: once a year, the Waste Management Branch hosts the
3 A+ [4 h+ z4 U& R3 eMaster Composter-Recycler Program. Over a 3 weeks course schedule6 V' C# Q( [7 o- W, g
(Tues./Thursday evenings and Saturday) volunteers will learn about J- Z" |1 ]6 @" p' r
environmental stewardship in our city, such as: history of waste. N7 ^, [9 z2 o2 O$ d% ~
management; home composting; household hazardous waste;
+ A9 }7 K+ L, C7 ]9 kvermin-composting and residential recycling.
" Y: w" X) M" _& E7 q! v/ A" K U
, a* J6 V8 Y% {7 u9 vThis course offers in-class instruction as well as several field trips
+ }2 W& N- k( a. q- ~ v* i8 Yto various City facilities. After finishing the course, graduates0 e0 k, a) l( d
complete 35 hours of volunteer activity promoting the four R's:
2 O! n! {- r; G9 greduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Graduates become important
7 n! A" E7 ~2 t4 a5 i+ A. tresources in their communities as they broaden awareness about the( _% O. O, [, t2 _
importance of composting and recycling.
G8 y' e/ e4 f- c, E$ C: R7 ^# N6 M3 y) Z f! G! Q
Examples of volunteer activities include: help with Reuse Fairs & the: ^) n$ H1 \: z0 F1 ?) b( c
Reuse Centre; helping friends/neighbours with composting problems;' K, G& M9 q( R8 w% C; m9 t+ F; {
public education display booths; assisting with programs and
" F) m! z Q6 w2 e8 J# Gmaintenance at the City Compost Education Centres; assisting at
0 G! l, B( @- P- E; bvarious demonstration gardens and general public and school
+ u O9 W$ N0 s( p+ g4 n# N, `; Wpresentations.5 A) I/ B) w* d( s
8 S6 p$ H3 F7 @0 ^' b% `
There are many other opportunities for volunteers to contribute and+ t- w1 `7 X3 J3 i, r1 G
volunteers are able to choose the opportunities that interest them the+ Y9 y" G/ ]; D& l# g* |/ n
most. Curious about recycling and composting and sharing your
7 H: J5 }2 B& H2 h% q: }knowledge with others, then apply to become a Master

Course Dates: April 14 - May 2nd, 2009 -Tuesday and Thursday evenings
