Edmonton's population grows by 30,000/ A9 G7 C1 I7 M

EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.: ?" m1 p/ _% b7 M: f7 W
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
' T1 i7 e3 M* }! g' PThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.

"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. 5 U1 i8 g) F5 X, f# A# E% |
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
