The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.0 D$ T! s4 l8 y3 f
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.
# I* ^: h& |) p- u1 C"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. 6 n/ \% j8 W" P5 U$ V& w4 O
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
+ ~- ~& G8 M% U, k; \' QThis year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
