Edmonton's population grows by 30,0008 G' G: U1 G" t0 E" A" F

* m: |) r, O8 e/ R+ ~% bEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.+ D9 G4 h* |+ e9 R" ^
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
# N. g8 e4 G; ~$ LThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.
, O# i. t# B; u1 ? bMandel said he was surprised by the increase.
$ [/ \$ ~$ G% s; [1 W0 _& O: d"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
+ k% @( q! t" Z6 G1 p6 S4 YEdmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.. u6 \% P( l/ l* K, p
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
