EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.0 x, L8 F. @2 c8 @% C+ B) q! d
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.

Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.3 v0 m* S2 W" r
"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. 7 n' e, |0 d7 I4 W: l; H& y% k: H
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
