to their first ministry, to reopen a church
2 G6 O _& h$ kin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October 5 l7 x9 q9 X7 l. d2 T% f E
excited about their opportunities. When they saw , U6 C q; n" r% ]0 w% i2 u+ x
their church, it was very run down and needed
: b! @6 a9 i4 O& I- p' N# n |! l6 Gmuch work. They set a goal to have everything % g# z2 O% M: n* `( c
done in time to have their first service
0 e. G$ R/ W% Z: _! E* K( b9 e9 }on Christmas Eve.
& m& n1 [& y' ?7 u& x7 A: `( mT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,. H! [* G# c9 M
painting, etc, and on December 18
+ N# ?" E4 O: k2 W0 w+ Y; r! ~were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
$ N( U; f* T! z; Y3 o; E1 aO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
$ L) {: C: h- f6 q* M6 ~rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
& K" `5 a: w7 D) X) n8 A O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.+ j- _, H P( O* r. y
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
( E2 V: u/ o& P9 {0 C. j& rleaked, causing a large area of plaster about ' X! z9 `& I4 C
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
! d; w8 s- C! C) y- Kof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
' z/ H4 q- [/ c/ P; gbeginning about head high. ! W5 O2 A1 T( C; t5 Z
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, , d) H; n% }% `0 W" |! u
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
1 z) x6 `7 p% A- S8 v- @2 L `& qthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
) g& D) y" x/ v( f {On the way he noticed that a local business was
5 E7 k5 S* r5 Thaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
7 n2 ~9 L. b) Fstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
1 j$ j1 }+ b3 E1 c! |( ~9 J! u+ j+ Yhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 7 a7 ^( b' f2 Q% v' @1 a! F+ q
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 4 w# X, u5 r7 ^% A' t0 @
embroidered right in the center. It was just
7 t5 g0 B- J6 Y) P2 }. b+ Y
# B* \' h" q; X% @4 v I$ Q3 h$ {* v" Z7 x( G% {& d' q: C3 x' ?) a6 m
# K3 B9 A" e X$ _. Y
3 m& v3 n G0 g6 \$ _ 0 _& y9 C/ d p z
) L$ h6 R2 } v1 h4 \the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. # b/ Q4 O% j4 c) c% n' h/ p
B y this time it had started to snow. An older 1 I6 _$ K, ~- S
woman running from the opposite direction was - D, }" Y9 o+ G0 Z# O) W0 I
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor 7 X c6 ?. w% a. f8 K8 M: ]5 |4 I
invited her to wait in the warm church for
' T6 e* d$ g. E' K9 ?# V4 W! ]' Dthe next bus 45 minutes later. + f+ S r: t* |6 T: |+ ^( o5 v
" D/ \' d; v, A# e) AShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor * N) g" z- h1 D) x/ e
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put : E1 v S5 G- G; M
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor " Q/ ]8 ^. A1 K" S6 a2 y& L
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
) D4 Z. n' z. E2 z S, f& dT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
% t& i8 p2 n6 L% h C+ _5 Y! ~aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
! B, z1 M* S' Z4 pshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
' v/ l, C0 k1 h6 O5 GThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
1 |6 N9 i9 R# q' i, ~- f$ ~the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
8 Y+ V9 q2 `" t V$ r2 Iit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
) m* E6 n# j" f, hmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . # @+ q3 D' b0 I! N, f- \
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
6 F. S0 C' r& W6 I& ^told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The ( |. E1 s8 O* z/ E2 @* E
woman explained that before the war she and / A8 P2 r$ l2 M! L% ]
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
% g* \8 v4 O% T! }# C V- y0 q( D7 o& Z/ i% m) l
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. & F# m8 t( G' g8 ~
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
( f* ~! a! H7 W9 l& q3 f. oHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her ! z1 k V5 j4 r5 _1 I& C( ?
husband or her home again. " }9 [7 i$ {* D7 f2 T4 |6 l) r! ?
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;8 Z2 o1 c( N# Q, `/ v* K6 b
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.9 `3 y: ^, G9 ]6 i
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
% O4 T8 a* `/ z( Ewas the least he could do. She lived on the other
- u; y2 P5 X+ H4 V) f1 H' W$ |: G6 gside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn " J: t3 W/ f& N
for the day for a housecleaning job.
! g6 _! \0 `3 ` U& m1 fW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas . U* V8 H% _( H( A
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
( U% b# \; |; z t4 fspirit were great. At the end of the service, the * B" n9 r7 }3 j! D# |
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
9 n4 G( u. P& u* R. p9 vand many said that they would return.. # ]" ]8 i6 ?- b6 M! E0 w
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
3 B2 ?+ S4 M/ q; Kfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the 0 X' V2 U# t1 T+ J, p& }3 d3 U
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
2 d( u+ K1 i' f8 Y$ ]# s: D0 ~+ Iwasn't leaving.
" U2 X" H3 L7 j/ GThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on & O$ p, s+ f+ Y4 a+ V3 I7 D
the front wall because it was identical to one 1 p; A; O# ?! B: r) N/ _4 ~; A" w2 x
that his wife had made years ago when
/ q) U- g, K; M- H" K! H! |they lived in Austria before the war and how
. K& e+ Q i, a; t: f, scould there be two tablecloths so much alike? * p2 t+ {. J2 k1 E' j
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
2 `; t3 U$ l1 s1 l" K* W" dforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
, r# I1 ^ O' Asupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
# C3 ~' m3 N- H* H* \1 Bput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home h7 x6 H; P% i. w u' j
again all the 35 years between.
6 Q" }. w9 c# s8 B# sT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to D' R( B/ w9 r: _ N
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten ; H% F& x, {0 g
Island and to the same house where the pastor ; k; T9 }8 P5 o
had taken the woman three days earlier.
; w" m }" v1 `. q7 c2 K. F9 u# B* RHe helped the man climb the three flights of5 q+ F" n) H; ]6 f
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
* |: i/ J. A4 v2 |4 o$ A9 |the door and he saw the greatest Christmas : z/ b' M7 v2 s
reunion he could ever imagine.
