for Internet services. It is essential that I hear the views of Canadians

0 m. ?* p: r9 `4 ] t/ }5 q0 qthat we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet! _8 ]" q1 c, o
service providers.

; e: J& G. C6 Aan increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving' G k) k+ ?0 n, u; ?
innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops( j: R) ?: S9 x$ U3 d
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look% |; z3 K0 q- d% z
carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be0 b6 l" J7 V! t/ s0 A
guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and; O+ o$ Q4 N2 q3 j$ M" R
investment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing
* @1 }; m$ T$ t4 Pmarket forces to prevail.

- N; ?# N2 R; E3 r/ @, BThe Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has
- F7 @8 Y# k3 M7 f- w4 vchosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large5 P- h {, B( x# `: L
number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the5 C- u3 J1 g9 A B& ?7 B
government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in/ ]( B e8 ^6 Q) F) j8 }; k
line with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages8 b/ m {0 |0 A9 u# V
competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that8 `7 r _% `6 A% `# R
any decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.
