Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression. ^3 S: Y9 p& n3 [$ u) t
of the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is( z; n+ x& k! w* O% s
now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3
4 H5 s6 @, k1 Cmegapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution; P2 b1 ?, y$ W, z2 `
within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color
! O$ v0 k6 E. I* i9 s, A, {3 dmatrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance! Z# e! R" |4 ^7 i7 }
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800; N* m6 c( ]2 ]4 B. s# ^3 n
allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject
r% c2 J/ p- r" q, D0 l1 K3 I2 `- Uwithout having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography8 |4 ?$ O E) L0 }
was traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum( E6 p/ K, w0 M# u1 b: X: D
image quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was
: S3 f, ?( p/ [9 D4 W* ^widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and; u x% K7 b$ I
convenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown
! X1 u* \! ?0 \8 U5 P# O9 ]# obefore, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,

When I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,

$ v, }5 b% b3 G! [4 Drange, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces7 r, `, k: l$ g, l' ]+ y0 i8 ~
the look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a
* @7 L1 D9 {7 {7 ` pD-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as

Autofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor0 I6 I5 B5 p) r$ r
has noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is
7 `0 ~# [$ L5 e& |8 heasier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while
' ?+ S2 n" m" D( p/ [3 Malso feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New. T$ n1 l) z/ o3 H
cameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features) m0 B1 z1 f, X! M$ g1 }
in such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality" g( C5 L- l- [! c/ ^' s3 U g
prints and video.
5 G, M5 q9 A" h$ BTo me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is
) p, u6 h9 _; Cnot megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models
# j' d& E$ G- d, k7 vare important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using
8 Y+ f" Z; b9 n( U# F7 Tcountless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first. z# c" E. H* \: G. p X5 }
sight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws( g9 V7 ]! q$ K: h2 F
like never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of
! L6 g2 I3 w! h0 Iacuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I7 u% y# h% k% n- F8 r ?8 j
am enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as P% _! u3 I/ L' H& w( X
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse% ^6 K& \$ t0 h$ |: r6 g
photography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add
3 X. v/ R; t1 V; g* N' B8 ~0 utremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the
7 k Q$ z( _2 q! @% d3 h' G2 ]/ GD800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express
0 i- O! T! {6 ?/ Iis that now I will think differently about the images I make.
( R) {: M' q: ]. m/ VAs a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,
& e& a4 t. [! \' \1 Ocompact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal
: y K0 b3 y" H% a/ Q6 s' |6 v$ partistic and client expectations. The Nikon D800 will set new standards for$ g5 F, N& x4 t& q- K: j6 [
the high-end 35mm D-SLR market. I have never worked with a 35mm digital

now. Particularly, the live view mode enables extremely precise compositions

' ~' ]- E$ S. ~6 p6 W( a8 aquality lenses such as the PC NIKKOR tilt & shift lineup are indispensable for9 w9 x4 \/ L* e+ ]0 Q# _. v
architectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they
5 K/ ~+ T6 Q# |9 i3 R" ?perfectly match with the newly invented system and produce breathtakingly
q& N2 a0 b$ d( B! gclean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility5 P/ T* O& N8 b& u( s4 W
to work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional
